Mental health chatbots increasingly rely on conversational interaction to support users' emotional well-being, yet little is known about how users interpret temporary silence while waiting for system responses. Existing research on social presence and anthropomorphic interaction has primarily focused on conversational content after a response is generated, whereas the waiting phase remains underexplored. Drawing on social presence theory, this study conceptualizes anthropomorphic latency cues as socially meaningful signals that may shape users’ emotional and interactional experiences during temporary conversational silence. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 developed and semantically validated three categories of anthropomorphic latency cues (empathic, effortful, and playful). Study 2 employed a within-subjects laboratory experiment with university students, comparing five latency-cue conditions (text, progress bar, empathic, effortful, and playful) using subjective evaluations, eye-tracking measures, and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that anthropomorphic latency cues were associated with lower anxiety and greater pleasure in several condition-level comparisons relative to non-anthropomorphic feedback. Perceived interaction continuity was significantly associated with reduced anxiety and enhanced pleasure. Within the anthropomorphic conditions, mediation analyses revealed significant indirect associations among perceived anthropomorphism, social presence, and emotional and interactional outcomes. Eye-tracking results indicated longer fixation durations on anthropomorphic latency cues during temporary silence. Qualitative findings further suggested that participants often interpreted latency cues as signals of attentiveness, responsiveness, and interaction continuity rather than merely as technical loading indicators. Overall, temporary conversational silence may function as a socially meaningful phase of AI-mediated interaction rather than a purely technical delay. The study extends social presence research into temporally silent phases of conversational AI interaction and provides preliminary design implications for chatbot-based support systems.
AI will play an increasingly large role in providing healthcare services in the near future, creating a pressing need to examine how people perceive AI compared to humans in healthcare. To this end, this study examines how people perceive AI and human doctors in a common medical scenario of giving healthcare advice over an online chat platform. Participants read an online chat conversation that featured a patient asking for medical advice with either an AI or human doctor. In addition, the doctor either linguistically aligned with the patient (by repeating medical terms previously used by the patient) or not (by using synonyms of the patient's terms). Linguistic alignment in conversation has been found to increase positive perceptions of interactions and therefore may be a useful tool to increase patient satisfaction in healthcare interactions. AI doctors but not human ones were penalized when not linguistically aligning with the patient, even though these doctors gave the same exact medical advice. Additionally, across a range of measures, participants in general had more negative perceptions of AI doctors compared to human ones. Overall, these results suggest that people hold AI to different standards as well as judge AI harsher than humans in medical settings.
Immersive virtual reality (VR) and neurofeedback (NF) are increasingly promoted to enhance mindfulness meditation, yet it remains unknown whether these externally engaging technologies confer lasting benefits for trait mindfulness over sustained practice. This longitudinal randomized controlled trial compared three conditions over a 4-week program (eight sessions) with a three-month follow-up: screen-based audio-guided mindfulness (Non-VR), mindfulness in an immersive VR environment (VR), and mindfulness in VR with real-time EEG neurofeedback (VR-NF). Ninety-four meditation-naïve participants completed the study. Trait mindfulness (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, FFMQ) was assessed at six time points, EEG signal was recorded during all sessions, and subjective presence (Igroup Presence Questionnaire, IPQ) in VR was measured. Linear mixed models and Bayesian analysis revealed comparable FFMQ increases across all three groups, indicating that VR and VR-NF did not confer added behavioral benefit for trait mindfulness development. Higher IPQ presence scores showed a modest negative correlation with long-term FFMQ gains at three-month follow-up. Exploratory EEG analyses described a numerically steeper theta trajectory in the Non-VR group relative to the VR and VR-NF groups, whereas alpha trajectories were comparable across groups. However, because the two EEG systems were not equivalent across conditions and recordings were obtained from frontopolar sites, these patterns are descriptive only and cannot be interpreted as evidence of group differences. Taken together, these findings suggest that VR and VR-NF did not confer added benefit for trait mindfulness in long-term mindfulness training.
