Background Children's exposure to electronic screens has risen sharply. This study quantitatively evaluated the association between excessive screen time and childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) risk through a systematic review and meta-analysis, exploring the moderating roles of age and media type. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched observational studies assessing children's screen time and ADHD, and finally included 10 observational studies with overall low-to-moderate risk of bias. Risk of bias was evaluated using the ROBINS-I tool. Continuous data were unified using the Chinn conversion rule. A DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model calculated pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Subgroup analyses, leave-one-out sensitivity analyses, and Begg's and Egger's tests were also conducted. Results Excessive screen time was significantly associated with elevated childhood ADHD risk (pooled OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.31–1.87, P < 0.001). Substantial between-study heterogeneity was observed (Q = 344.51, I 2 = 97.4%, P < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed significant age-related heterogeneity: preschoolers (0–6 years) showed a larger magnitude of association (OR = 2.40, 95% CI: 1.44–3.98), whereas the association in school-age children and adolescents (>6 years) was of smaller magnitude (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.05–1.29). Passive TV/video viewing showed a higher point estimate of ADHD risk (OR = 2.20) than interactive digital media (OR = 1.10), but the between-group difference did not reach statistical significance. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings. Conclusions Excessive screen exposure is significantly associated with elevated ADHD risk in children, with distinct age-specific and media type-specific patterns. The preschool period appears to be a high-risk window for screen-related neurodevelopmental effects, with a trend toward stronger association for passive screen exposure. Public health and clinical interventions should prioritize restricting early screen exposure, particularly passive, fast-paced videos without substantial interaction.

۵۱، I ۲ = ۹۷.

Background Adolescents globally exhibit growing engagement with discretionary screen time, but its association with depressive symptoms remains unclear in developing economies. Objective To examine the relationship between discretionary screen time and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study of 4,706 adolescents in Maoming City, Guangdong Province, China. Participants were stratified into four discretionary screen time categories: <1 h ( n = 1,372), 1–2 h ( n = 1,277), 2–4 h ( n = 1,032), and ≥4 h ( n = 1,025). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the validated CESD-9, with a cutoff score of ≥10. The primary analysis was a multilevel logistic regression model with random intercepts for school and class, adjusted for all measured covariates except BMI, anxiety and insomnia; a model additionally adjusted for BMI, anxiety and insomnia served as a sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses evaluated potential effect modification. Results The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 29.7% (1,398/4,706). In the primary multilevel model (random intercepts for school and class; adjusted for sociodemographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, without BMI, anxiety and insomnia), compared with the <1 h reference group, the odds ratios were 1.21 (95% CI: 0.98–1.49; p = 0.082) for 1–2 h, 1.88 (95% CI: 1.52–2.33; p < 0.001) for 2–4 h, and 2.54 (95% CI: 2.04–3.16; p < 0.001) for ≥4 h; each screen-time category increment was associated with 39% higher odds of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.29–1.49; p < 0.001). When additionally adjusted for BMI, anxiety and insomnia (sensitivity analysis, Model 4), the associations were attenuated but remained statistically significant for the higher categories (≥4 h: OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.28–2.22; per-category OR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.09–1.29). Subgroup analyses revealed no statistically significant evidence of effect modification (all p -interaction >0.05). Conclusion Prolonged discretionary screen time is significantly associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, indicating a graded association that strengthens with increasing screen time. These findings are relevant to public-health monitoring of discretionary screen use in adolescents.

Huihui Zhang; Yucheng Liu; Yifan Zuo; Jiabao Cui Frontiers in Pediatrics, 2026, Vol. 14, pp. 1860806 https://doi.org/10.3389/fped.2026.1860806

Background This pilot study with class-level random assignment examined preliminary evidence on the associations between a structured physical game intervention and memory and attention in children aged 5–6 years. Methods A 12-week physical game program based on cognitive load theory was designed and implemented, consisting of three 60-minute training sessions per week. The program included various game activities designed to promote memory and attention development supplemented by smart interactive motion data collection devices. A pilot study with class-level random assignment was conducted among 59 children aged 5–6 years. Two intact kindergarten classes were included, with one class assigned to the experimental group ( n = 30) and the other to the control group ( n = 29). The experimental group received the structured physical play intervention, whereas the control group participated in routine kindergarten physical activities. The class, rather than the individual child, was the unit of randomization. Before and after the intervention, children's memory and attention levels were assessed using the Wechsler Memory Scale (measuring picture memory, visual reproduction, visual recognition, digit span forward, and digit span backward) and the Schulte Grid test. Results A 2 × 2 repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant Group×Time interactions for total short-term memory ( F (1,57) = 14.33, p < .001, η p 2 = .20), total immediate memory ( F (1,57) = 7.84, p = .007, η p 2 = .12), picture memory ( F (1,57) = 6.10, p = .017, η p 2 = .10), visual reproduction ( F (1,57) = 18.40, p < .001, η p 2 = .24), and digit span forward ( F (1,57) = 5.26, p = .026, η p 2 = .08). A significant Group×Time interaction was also observed for attention performance ( F (1,57) = 8.17, p = .006, η p 2 = .13). These findings indicated greater pre–post changes in the experimental condition than in the control condition for the outcomes examined. Conclusion These findings provide preliminary evidence that a structured physical game intervention was associated with improvements in memory-related task performance and task-related attentional processing in children aged 5–6 years.
