In this article, we present findings from a critical participatory action research (CPAR) study of Achieve Atlanta (AATL), a place-based, need-based grant program for students graduating from Atlanta Public Schools. The purpose of this research was to better understand how the AATL scholarship and its associated services shaped the experiences, opportunities, and positive outcomes of AATL Scholars, with specific attention to borrowing and debt repayment. We argue that lifting or reducing the debt burden allowed students to accumulate additional forms of dominant cultural capital, namely, time. We further argue that time, as a largely neglected form of capital, enabled students to be college students and provided the conditions for academic success.
Student loan debt held by borrowers in the United States, now exceeding $1.83 trillion, has reshaped higher education access and affordability, yet little is known about how practitioners who advise students make sense of this system while navigating their own borrowing experiences. Guided by Weick’s (1995) sensemaking framework, this qualitative study examines the introspective and extrospective perspectives of 30 higher education practitioners across diverse institutional contexts. Through semi-structured interviews, we explore how practitioners reconcile personal debt with professional responsibilities and interpret shifting student attitudes toward borrowing. Findings reveal pervasive ambivalence: loans are framed as a “necessary burden”—essential for educational and career mobility yet emotionally and financially constraining. Practitioners report growing student anxiety, early skepticism about loan value, and widespread financial literacy gaps. These insights underscore the ethical and emotional labor embedded in advising and highlight implications for policy, institutional practice, and professional development aimed at improving affordability and informed decision-making.
Conversations about student debt frequently target attendees of four-year and professional institutions, since higher-cost institutions are more likely to lead to high levels of debt. While some research has focused on financial aid and college funding at community colleges, we have comparatively limited scholarship regarding conceptualizations of student debt. Some scholars have studied financial aid staff at community colleges, but research has been primarily quantitative in nature. This study remedies that gap by offering a qualitative perspective about student debt, pairing student and staff views and analyzing them by investigating the social meaning of the money, or what student debt means to students. The study location is a large community college in Texas. Students reported fear regarding debt and some staff shared concerns about possible misuse of aid, through students failing to meet satisfactory academic requirements, taking more debt than needed for living expenses, or using financial aid for personal expenditures.
This special issue introduction argues that qualitative inquiry is essential for understanding student loan debt beyond the scale and distributional patterns documented in quantitative research. Drawing on eight contributing papers, the authors demonstrate that borrowing is a lived, emotional, and evolving experience shaped by identity, mental health, and shifting life circumstances. The collection examines borrower decision-making that resists rational economic models, the embedded perspectives of higher education practitioners who advise students while managing their own debt, structural inequalities that constrain choice, and the confusion produced by a complex loan system. Together, these studies call for a methodological shift toward centering lived experience in debt research and policy.
Student loan repayment can impact individual’s financial outcomes and well-being. Life course theory suggests these impacts may result from how loan repayment interacts with live events, transition periods, and broader context in an individual’s life. This paper highlights the experiences of recent college graduates as they navigate entering loan repayment simultaneously with other life changes after college graduation. Many borrowers in our study entered repayment as the COVID-related payment pause ended. In addition to these federal policy changes, borrowers in our study experienced profound changes in their employment status, health, and social lives after graduation. As time passed, these life changes and external policy contexts grew more salient, leading to changes in borrowers’ repayment goals.
