The role of Teaching Assistants (TAs) in the United Kingdom has expanded substantially, particularly in supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in mainstream schools. Despite their central contribution to inclusive education, TAs’ emotional experiences and perspectives remain under-researched. This qualitative study explored how TAs experience and regulate the emotional demands of supporting pupils with SEND, alongside their perceptions of inclusion. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis examined the lived experiences of eight TAs (aged 47–65) from one UK mainstream primary school. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, with reflexive practice embedded throughout analysis. Five Group Experiential Themes were identified: emotional labour and regulation; perceptions of inclusion in practice; relational dynamics and TA identity; parental relationships and emotional impact; and fulfilment, growth, and meaning in supporting SEND. TAs supported inclusion but described systemic barriers, including limited resources, training, and collaboration. They reported emotional labour that extended beyond the workplace, alongside professional fulfilment derived from pupil progress and attachment-based relationships. While these relationships supported pupils’ development, they also contributed to role ambiguity and emotional strain. The findings highlight the emotional complexity of TA work and the need for structured emotional and professional support to sustain wellbeing and inclusive practice.
This comparative ethnographic study draws on fieldwork in England and Brasil to analyse how refugee and (im)migrant children's educational rights are undermined in these two contexts. I argue that inclusion operates as enclosure: rather than guaranteeing rights, inclusion frameworks reproduce the structural conditions that sustain exclusion. In England, the hostile environment subordinates education to migration control through asylum dispersal, No Recourse to Public Funds, and the Prevent Duty’s surveillance. In Brasil, despite stronger legal protections, the humanitarianisation of Venezuelan displacement obscures the role of US sanctions and uses educational materials to reinforce donor influence. Across both contexts, systemic barriers such as housing instability, language exclusion, and policy fragmentation perpetuate enclosure. The findings challenge universal inclusion frameworks and call for justice-oriented, context-sensitive alternatives to advance educational equity for all children.
This study responds to limited empirical research on the relationship between inclusive education, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and teacher education in southern Africa. While these educational agendas are somehow linked in policy discourse, there remains little evidence showing how teacher educators can integrate inclusivity and sustainability in practice. This study explored how teacher educators in Malawi, Tanzania and Eswatini mainstreamed inclusive education through UNESCO's Sustainability Starts with Teachers (SST) programme and its ESD Change Projects. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory and Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, the research adopted a qualitative formative interventionist approach using a nested case study design. The findings revealed that teacher educators developed inclusive pedagogical proficiency through collaborative and contextually grounded Change Projects that addressed contradictions between inclusivity, sustainability and teacher education practice. This study found that pedagogical proficiency was strengthened through engaged practice, collaborative reflection and institutional learning processes. Drawing from these findings, this article advances the Sustainable Inclusive Pedagogical Proficiency Process (SIP3) model as a contextually grounded southern African contribution for understanding and operationalising inclusive pedagogical proficiency in teacher education. The SIP3 model is a practice-research and professional development framework for strengthening inclusive and sustainable teacher education practices.
As universities, within the UK and internationally, strive to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their practices, policies and, ultimately, cultures, it is imperative to prioritise student voice and co-production with equity-denied groups. This study examines students’ views, particularly those of equity-denied groups, on student voice mechanisms and explores opportunities to develop more inclusive approaches to policy and practice design in higher education. This article draws on the literature on co-production and student-staff partnerships to critically explore the process of moving from transactional to dialogical approaches to eliciting and responding to the ‘student voice’, emphasising how relationship builiding in policy design can facilitate a more inclusive environment. The article is underpinned by student-led focus groups with students, a survey and roundtable discussions with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion leads nationally. The findings emphasise the importance of moving from transactional feedback methods towards adopting a dialogical, partnership-based approach to policy and practice design and evaluation. The article contributes a framework for when and how to co-produce with students in higher education, particularly those from equity denied groups. We contend that when conducted meaningfully, promoting dialogical student voice mechanisms and co-producing change with students can enhance student experience and ultimately inclusion, while promoting social justice in higher education.
Teacher wellbeing is a growing focus in many schools within the UK. Many strategies have been put forward to improve teacher wellbeing, but very little research has been directed toward support staff in schools. The research presented here aims to increase the value of support staff and encourage the implementation of strategies to improve their wellbeing. Using thematic analysis to interpret discussions held with in-service Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), it was found that there is a lack of clarity in the roles held, wellbeing is mostly affected by the additional needs of the students they work with, and that most LSAs feel undervalued by other staff in their place of work. Several recommendations have been made to improve the wellbeing of these support roles. Explicit information should be given to teachers to optimise support in their lessons and in turn improve the learning environment for all students regardless of need. In addition to this, LSAs would feel further valued if provided more time to complete other responsibilities.
Achieving equality in music education for people with disability calls for transformative changes to attitudes, structures and norms. Segregation and streaming remains prevalent in instrumental music education, gatekeeping access and opportunity to mainstream education opportunities. The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, Article 24) ascribes access to inclusive education for people with disability on an equal basis, with the aim of fully developing human potential. Despite this, academic theorising about inclusive education still limits how this may be practically and philosophically applied in music education. Inclusion in instrumental music education is further limited by a culture of performance excellence rather than equity and enrichment of all, and a focus on music performance outcomes rather than a deep and holistic education experience gleaned from music making and participation. Significant EDI initiatives that aim to foster inclusive environments and practices are considered and drawn to music education contexts, in particular instrumental music education in Australia, where access for students with disability at the secondary level is severely limited. Our critique extends to praxial and philosophical considerations concerning the role of education in instrumental music in schools, accessibility, and social justice considerations educators should consider in devising of inclusive curricula, pedagogies and engagement.
Leadership plays a decisive role in the implementation of inclusive education at the school level. In this paper, we report on a small-scale, qualitative study which explored how the beliefs and actions of leadership teams at two mainstream schools in the Maldives influenced their efforts to provide a shared vision for inclusion and a positive culture across their school community. School selection was based on purposive sampling, with both schools being recognised for their good inclusive practice. Semi-structured interviews with the six leaders (the principal, deputy principal, and the leading teacher at each school) were used to capture personal beliefs, shared understandings and daily actions that promoted inclusion at the respective schools. Data analysis revealed two major themes: Access for learning and Building collaboration and partnerships through supportive leadership. While a sense of duty, strong desire and personal drive were common threads running across individual perspectives and themes, leaders signalled that a lack of resourcing (human and material) was a major obstacle to the successful implementation of inclusive education in their country.
