Struggling readers are a persistent concern in Philippine elementary education, yet research has largely examined student reading outcomes rather than the professional, emotional, and instructional experiences of the teachers who support these learners in resource-constrained, multilingual classrooms. This study investigated the lived experiences of elementary English teachers in identifying and supporting struggling readers, and how they adapt their pedagogy and negotiate contextual barriers. Transcendental phenomenological design was employed. Fifteen proficient public elementary English teachers in Baguio City, Philippines, were selected through criterion purposive sampling and interviewed using semi-structured, face-to-face interviews. Transcripts were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis, and trustworthiness was supported through member checking. Four themes emerged: (a) diagnostic triage through standardized literacy assessments, (b) pedagogical flexibility and differentiated scaffolded instruction, (c) ecosystemic collaboration via remedial and peer networks, and (d) socio-contextual barriers, including parental illiteracy and resource constraints. The findings suggest that Vygotskian scaffolding must be extended to account for ecological and linguistic barriers in post-colonial multilingual classrooms, because its effectiveness is bounded by the educational and socioeconomic capital of the home. Implications for teacher professional development, curriculum localization, language-in-education policy, and parental partnership are discussed.

Awareness of Youth-Friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health Services among Undergraduate Students at Saint Augustine University of Tanzania, Mwanza, Tanzania: A Cross-Sectional Study

Frank Deus Samson; Paskas Wagana; Johnson Mavole International journal of social sciences and humanities review, 2026

Background: Awareness of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services (YFSRHS) is an important starting point for enabling young people to identify and seek appropriate sexual and reproductive health information and care. However, awareness of these services may vary across settings, including higher education institutions. Objective: To determine the level of awareness of YFSRHS among undergraduate students at Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), Malimbe Campus. Methods: A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students at SAUT Malimbe Campus. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. Of 109 questionnaires distributed, 108 completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize students’ awareness and reported sources of information. Results: Of the 108 respondents, 96 (88.9%) reported having heard of YFSRHS, while 12 (11.1%) had not. Social media was the most frequently reported source of information (44.0%), followed by friends or peers (41.0%) and health facilities (36.0%). University programmes and posters or advertisements were reported less frequently. Conclusion: Most respondents had heard of YFSRHS, with social media and peer networks serving as prominent information channels. Strengthening accurate information through these channels, alongside university-based communication, may help address the awareness gap among students who remain unreached.

It’s not who you know: sociometric position did not shape children’s innovation or imitation propensities

Introduction The capacity for cumulative culture depends on the interplay between social learning and innovation, yet the social-ecological factors that shape individual variation in these processes remain poorly understood. Children’s position within peer networks has been theorised to influence learning strategies by shaping exposure to social models and normative conformity pressures, but this prediction remains untested in experimental contexts. Methods We tested whether children’s sociometric position predicted social learning and innovation across three complementary experimental tasks. 256 children aged 7–11 completed sociometric friendship nominations within their school classrooms and three tasks: the Multi-Method Box, a puzzlebox measuring learning strategy choice and innovation-by-modification; a tool innovation task, the hook task; and the Alternate Uses divergent thinking task. We derived three peer-nomination indices — out-degree, reciprocated friendships, and in-degree — and tested their associations with task performance using multilevel models controlling for age and classroom clustering. Results Across all tasks and outcome measures, none of the sociometric indices predicted children’s learning strategy choice, imitation fidelity, innovation-by-modification, tool innovation success, solution method, or divergent thinking performance. In contrast, age consistently predicted innovation-related outcomes: older children produced more reward-exit and tool-entrance innovations on the Multi-Method Box, were more likely to solve the hook task and to use a hook rather than a dragging strategy, and generated more divergent thinking responses. These age effects replicated well-established developmental findings and held independently of children’s network position. Discussion These findings suggest that individual-level dispositions and developmental cognitive gains may carry greater explanatory weight than relational embeddedness for micro-level learning decisions in middle childhood. Network structure may regulate the flow of cultural information across populations without determining the immediate learning strategy choices of individual children in individually administered experimental contexts.

Nico Van der Merwe; Elmarie Papageorgiou; Wendy Terblanche; Ilse Lubbe Accounting Education, 2026, pp. 1-28 https://doi.org/10.1080/09639284.2026.2742947

This study examined how structural and psychosocial differences across universities shape accounting students’ behavioural intention to use e-learning applications and their sense of belonging, as well as the interconnection between behavioural intention and a sense of belonging. Quantitative data were collected from accounting students at four South African universities using the Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) model to explain behavioural intention to use e-learning technology, while themes related to a sense of belonging were identified in qualitative data collected from the same students. The results revealed positive aspects of e-learning, such as greater enjoyment, while other students reported a lack of engagement and difficulties with self-motivation and building peer networks. Challenges identified include technological barriers, a lack of social integration, inadequate support for technical issues, and a lack of personalised attention. These aspects diminish students’ sense of belonging to the academic community. The study makes three main contributions to scholarship: firstly, it provides a contextually grounded analysis of students’ engagement with e-learning and their sense of belonging in accounting education; secondly, it provides insights which are relevant in other developing regions; and lastly, it identifies key barriers that contribute to the challenges inherent in e-learning.
