Abstract Lifelong learning is important for everyone, individually and collectively within institutions and communities. In today’s “learning society”, learning is not just a process driven by the learning system or the social system; it can also be a process in which the learners play an active role. This article focuses on the Erasmus+ project “Empowerment for migrants, from camps to integration” (CAMPLUS) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Between 2021 and 2022, personal resources management (PRM) training was implemented in three refugee camps in Erbil. The central question driving the project was whether, and how, PRM can transform refugee learners’ ability to define and pursue their developmental goals. This inquiry is rooted in Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy, which promotes dialogical learning as a means of empowering marginalised learners as agents of their own education. PRM integrates the validation of prior learning (VPL) with personalised pathways, based on the belief that competencies, gained formally, informally or experientially, should be recognised as the foundation for further learning. This approach aligns with Freire’s ideal of critical consciousness, which posits learning as a process of naming, reclaiming and transforming one’s reality. Using a qualitative analysis involving 15 refugees and three trainers, the authors explore how learner agency and institutional affordance combine to create meaningful learning outcomes. The study addresses a key gap in research: how reflective, personalised education can function in settings marked by displacement and limited opportunities.
Abstract In postcolonial Anglophone Cameroon, language is not merely a medium of communication; it acts as a pathway to socio-economic survival. The North West Region is heavily impacted by both patriarchal customary laws and the protracted socio-political crisis. This crisis has led to an increase in the number of widows. This sociolinguistic study examines the relationship between functional English Literacy and the socio-economic empowerment of widows in Bamenda, Cameroon. Utilising a comparative mixed methods research design, the study uses questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to contrast two distinct cohorts: Literate and non-literate widows. This work is grounded in Naila Kabeer’s empowerment framework and Paulo Freire’s critical literacy. A total of two hundred (200) widows were administered the questionnaires. Forty (40) widows were involved in the interview. The findings reveal a stark divergence between the two cohorts. While the non-literate widows face systemic property dispossession, financial exploitation and micro-finance exclusion due to language barriers, literate widows successfully leverage their skills to scale up their businesses, defend inheritance rights, navigate healthcare systems and secure their children’s education. The paper concludes by recommending development and humanitarian interventions in patriarchal, conflict-affected zones to transition from blind financial relief toward integrated rights-based, health-based and economic-based literacy frameworks.
Liberation heritage occupies a central place in South Africa’s political and intellectual landscape, yet its implications for curriculum transformation in higher education remain under-theorised. While post-apartheid universities have increasingly embraced calls for the decolonisation and Africanisation of knowledge, debates surrounding curriculum reform often invoke liberation narratives without critically interrogating how these historical legacies shape contemporary knowledge production. This article offers a conceptual analysis of the relationship between liberation heritage and the politics of curriculum transformation in South African higher education. The paper draws on the critical pedagogical framework of Paulo Freire, particularly his work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, to reconceptualise curriculum transformation as part of a broader project of intellectual and political liberation. From this perspective, education is understood not merely as a site of knowledge transmission but as a terrain of struggle where historical relations of power, domination, and resistance are reproduced and contested. The article argues that liberation heritage functions both as a symbolic resource and as a contested political discourse within contemporary debates on curriculum reform. By engaging key concepts within Critical Pedagogy, Curriculum Studies, and Political Science, the article develops a conceptual framework that links liberation heritage to processes of epistemic transformation in higher education. It contends that the persistence of colonial epistemological structures within university curricula reflects a tension between the historical ideals of liberation and the institutional realities of post-apartheid knowledge systems. The paper therefore proposes that meaningful curriculum transformation requires moving beyond symbolic invocations of liberation toward pedagogical praxis that cultivates critical consciousness and epistemic plurality. In doing so, the article contributes to emerging debates on decolonisation, liberation heritage, and the politics of knowledge production in twenty-first-century Africa.
