Music interventions in exercise performance, recovery and sleep: a scoping review

Mahi Parikh; Adarsh Keshari International Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 11, pp. 5562-5570 https://doi.org/10.18203/2320-6012.ijrms20264228

Music has been investigated as a potential influence on exercise performance, perceived exertion, recovery, and sleep. However, studies vary in their interventions, populations, exercise contexts, and measured outcomes. This scoping review aimed to map experimental evidence on music interventions in resistance, isometric and handgrip, aerobic exercise, acute recovery, and sleep, and to identify evidence gaps. PubMed/MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for studies published between 1980 and October 2026. Eligible studies involved human participants, compared a music intervention with a control or alternative condition, and reported exercise performance, perceived exertion, psychological responses, physiological recovery, or sleep outcomes. Screening was conducted using Rayyan. Findings were synthesised descriptively across four domains. Thirty studies involving 1,183 participants were included. Studies were published between 1981 and 2021 and examined resistance exercise (n=11), isometric and handgrip exercise (n=8), aerobic exercise and acute recovery (n=7) and sleep (n=4). The evidence maps a broad range of music interventions and outcomes, with variable findings across exercise and sleep contexts. Research gaps include limited participant diversity and insufficient investigation of sleep and recovery in athletic populations. Further studies are needed to clarify how music characteristics, individual preferences, and task demands relate to outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Outpatient hysteroscopy is an essential gynaecological procedure used to evaluate and treat any intrauterine pathologies. However, the most common reason for procedure failure is pain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) and music for pain management during outpatient hysteroscopy. METHODS: This was a non-blinded randomised controlled trial conducted at a single tertiary hospital in Hong Kong. Eligible patients were randomised at a 1:1:1 ratio into three groups: VR, music, and control. Patients' pain scores were assessed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale from 0 to 10 at various timepoints during hysteroscopy. The primary outcome was the maximum pain score during hysteroscopy. Secondary outcomes included pain scores at specific timepoints during hysteroscopy, other symptoms, patient satisfaction scores, and acceptance of undergoing future hysteroscopy in the same setting if needed. RESULTS: A total of 210 patients were analysed in the study. Overall, 65.7% of patients underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy, and 34.3% underwent additional procedures. The mean maximum pain scores did not significantly differ among the three groups (P=0.131). However, acceptance of future hysteroscopy was significantly higher in both the music group (mean ± standard deviation: 8.8 ± 2.1; P=0.002) and the VR group (8.6 ± 1.6; P=0.009) than in the control group (7.5 ± 2.7; overall P=0.001). CONCLUSION: The use of VR and music during outpatient hysteroscopy did not result in a statistically significant reduction in pain. However, patient acceptance of future hysteroscopy was significantly improved in both intervention groups.

The Therapeutic Impact of Traditional Indian Instrumental Music on Labour Pain and Anxiety in Primigravida Mothers: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Paulina Kumari; Janet Prima Miranda; Amisha S Amin; Vijayalaxmi Subramanium Journal of Health and Allied Sciences NU, 2026, Vol. 0, pp. 1-9 https://doi.org/10.25259/jhasnu_81_2026

Objectives Childbirth is a universally intense physiological and psychological event. For primigravida women, the lack of prior experience often leads to heightened anxiety and lower pain tolerance during the first stage of labour. This study evaluates the efficacy of a specialized instrumental sound therapy as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to manage these outcomes. Material and Methods A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design was utilized at a tertiary care hospital in Mangaluru. Sixty-eight primigravida women were recruited via purposive sampling and divided into intervention ( n = 34) and control ( n = 34) groups. The intervention consisted of two 30-min sessions of traditional Indian instrumental music administered via headphones during the latent phase (2-4 cm dilatation) with a 30-min rest interval. Pain was assessed using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and anxiety was measured via the Visual Analogue Scale for Anxiety (VASA). Results The study of 68 primigravida mothers found that following the music intervention, the experimental group showed highly significant reductions in mean pain score (6.44–5.00) and anxiety (4.50–3.59) score, whereas scores in the control group naturally increased as labour progressed. Post-test comparisons confirmed that traditional Indian instrumental music significantly lowered pain and anxiety levels compared to standard care, establishing it as an effective non-pharmacological labour aid. Conclusion Specialized instrumental music is a highly effective, low-cost tool for improving maternal comfort and psychological stability during labour. These findings support the integration of structured music therapy into standard obstetric care protocols to enhance the birthing experience in modern, home-like labour environments.
