Teaching and the decolonisation of research: structures of theory and inquiry

Teaching in Higher Education, 2026, pp. 1-20 https://doi.org/10.1080/13562517.2026.2735435

This article applies Syed Farid Alatas’s two-part framework for decolonisation, critique and construction, and considers what it entails for research training and methods pedagogy in the contemporary university. We argue that the first part, critique, must consider diverse epistemic traditions and the material and conceptual conditions through which research reproduces inequalities. The second part, construction, consisting of reconstruction and original construction, requires a discrete set of pedagogical practices, including problem-genealogy and concept-mining tasks for trainee researchers. Reconstruction deals with already established subject-matter, problem statements, theories, concepts and methods, while original construction, demands, among other things, theoretical and conceptual innovation and methodological pluralism in argumentation, including arts-based research and indigenous storywork. We argue that reconstruction and original construction in the curriculum are inseparable from the reconstruction of the institution itself. Moreover, to have impact for teaching, decolonising commitments must be explicitly written into university partnerships, internationalisation policies, and transnational teaching agreements.

What did critical thinking ever do for us? Teaching critical thinking in the age of AI

Nin Kirkham Educational Philosophy and Theory, 2026, pp. 1-12 https://doi.org/10.1080/00131857.2026.2733624

The call for papers for the 2025 PESA conference referenced our ‘increasingly pluralistic, post-truth, post-reality and divided world’ and the ‘existential problems’ that we face—noting climate change, AI, populism and the decline in ethical and reasoned discourse. The assumption contained in the call was that equipping young people with the ability to engage in reasoned deliberation is more pressing than ever before. And certainly, educating for critical thinking—thoughtfulness, coherence, rationality—is often held up as a silver bullet to heal our seemingly ailing and divided world. Perhaps rightly so. But here, I apply some critical thinking to the claim. Drawing on many years of involvement in teaching philosophy and ethics at the tertiary level, I reflect on what teaching critical thinking skills can, and cannot, achieve. I question the pervasive ‘crisis’ framing in education, suggesting that constant existential rhetoric can leave students anxious and less resilient and I argue for some guiding principles: teach students how to think, not what to think; and guard against ideological narrowing, ensuring critical thinking is genuinely open to diverse perspectives, including those that make us uncomfortable. Rather than a cure-all, critical thinking should be taught as a discipline grounded in humility, charity, and the courage to engage with difference. Its power lies not in solving every societal problem, but in equipping students to reason together in good faith—even when the stakes are existential.
