This study examined how executive functions and cognitive-linguistic skills relate to online lexical processing during sentence reading as a function of word frequency, word length, and concreteness in 171 first- and second-grade children. Executive functions (interference, verbal working memory, and fluency) and linguistic abilities (vocabulary, Rapid Automatized Naming, and phonological awareness) were assessed and linked to two oculomotor indices of word processing, namely First Fixation Duration (FFD) and Total Fixation Duration (TFD), computed for six lexical areas of interest, using descriptive analyses and regression models. Children processed high-frequency words more efficiently than low-frequency words in both FFD and TFD. Early efficiency was associated with fluency and phonological awareness (PA), whereas later efficiency was linked to interference control. Although long words descriptively elicited longer fixations, neither age nor cognitive and linguistic skills significantly predicted differences in FFD or TFD, suggesting that word length was not a reliable predictor of lexical processing efficiency in this task. No consistent advantage was found for concrete over abstract words. Abstract words imposed greater demands during the initial stages of processing (FFD), but these differences diminished in TFD and were not explained by cognitive or linguistic skills. Taken together, these findings provide preliminary evidence that lexical processing efficiency in emergent readers may depend more strongly on word familiarity and on cognitive and linguistic skills than on word length or concreteness, highlighting the interaction between stimulus properties and individual competencies in early reading. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution, as they are task-specific and based on limited item sampling, with only one item representing each lexical category.
Iconicity, understood as perceived resemblance between aspects of form and meaning, provides a central basis for representing conceptual information in the manual-visual modality. Previous research on silent gesture has shown systematic associations between semantic categories and particular iconic strategies, with several strategies sometimes used together to represent a concept. How these strategies are organized when they are used together, however, remains less well understood. Using an individually administered task adapted from an established silent gesture paradigm, we elicited silent gestures from 38 Mandarin-speaking hearing non-signers to represent 246 concepts spanning concrete and abstract conceptual categories. We examined how concreteness and conceptual category were related to the occurrence of combinations and how meaningful manual units were organized sequentially, simultaneously, or in mixed structures. Our results show that most manual productions contained a single meaningful unit. Concrete concepts were more likely than abstract concepts to elicit combinations overall and simultaneous-only combinations, while conceptual category was associated with all three organizational formats. Sequential combinations were the most frequent, with drawing and embodying tending to precede acting, while pointing and schema mapping tended to precede symbolic mapping. Simultaneous combinations were characterized by recurrent pairings across the hands, especially acting with embodying and representing with locating, and broader iconicity-type pairings varied across conceptual categories. Mixed combinations were rare but clustered in concepts that invited both temporal staging and bimanual integration. Our findings extend patterned iconicity beyond the selection of individual form-meaning mappings to the relations among multiple iconic depictions. They show that the manual-visual modality provides temporal and spatial resources through which conceptual relations can be externalized and systematically organized even in the absence of an established sign language system.
Abstract Although the discrete emotion perspective has gained increasing attention in affective and psycholinguistic research, large-scale normative datasets in a second language (L2) remain limited. To address this gap, the present study introduces a comprehensive database of discrete emotion norms for L2 English. The dataset comprises 1,122 words evaluated by 525 Chinese-English bilinguals across five discrete emotion categories: happiness, anger, fear, disgust and sadness. Participants rated subsets of these words using a 5-point Likert scale. The results demonstrate high inter-rater reliability and reveal systematic relationships between discrete emotion ratings and affective dimensions. Furthermore, these categorical ratings correlate with emotion prototypicality and key psycholinguistic variables, including age of acquisition, word frequency, concreteness and semantic diversity. Distributional analyses highlight a pronounced asymmetry: happiness dominates the semantic space. This database provides detailed discrete emotion ratings for each word and offers a fine-grained tool for selecting controlled stimuli for research on L2 emotion.
