The Impact of Gamification on Achievement, Flow Experience, and Emotional State

Sebahat Sevgi Uygur; Yasemin Kahyaoğlu Erdoğmuş Kuramsal Eğitimbilim, 2026, Vol. 19, Issue 4, pp. 879-905 https://doi.org/10.30831/akukeg.1861499

The research aimed to examine the effects of gamification environments on university students' achievement, flow experiences, and emotional states. This study utilized a mixed-methods design, incorporating a quasi-experimental approach for the quantitative phase and a phenomenological approach for the qualitative phase. The study group consisted of 80 students (Quizizz, n = 32; Quizlet, n = 48) enrolled in the Educational Psychology course at a state university. Data were collected through the Achievement Test, Flow Experience Scale, and Positive and Negative Affect Scale. Both groups showed significant pre-test to post-test gains in achievement, with no significant difference between the two groups. Flow experience was positively correlated with positive emotion in both groups, but with achievement only in the Quizlet group. In the Quizizz group, achievement was moderately and negatively correlated with negative emotion, whereas no such relationship was found in the Quizlet group. No significant relationship was found between achievement and positive emotion in either group. Qualitative findings revealed that students actively engaged in both environments, reported higher motivation, and found learning more enjoyable. However, they experienced the platforms differently. Quizizz users emphasized excitement through competition and scoring, whereas Quizlet users highlighted confidence gained from repetition and individual progress. Overall, these results indicate that gamification tools led to similar achievement gains, but through different flow and emotional processes.

Buffering stress in cognitive aging: the moderating role of positive emotions on trait-level stress reactivity and negative emotions in middle-aged and older adults

Rose Sin Yi Lin; Maria M Quiñones-Cordero; Kathi L. Heffner Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1916607 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2026.1916607

Introduction This study examined the moderating role of positive emotion in the relationship between trait-like stress reactivity and negative emotion, and whether this moderating effect varies by cognitive performance and cognitive decline across nine years. Methods Using data from 2,041 participants in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study (mean age = 65.52 years), hierarchical regression models were conducted to predict negative emotion from trait-like stress reactivity, positive emotion, and their interaction, controlling for age, gender, years of education, depressed mood, and neuroticism. Simple slope analyses were conducted to test the direction of significant interactions. Analyses were repeated within subgroups of cognitive performance and cognitive decline across 9 years. Results The interaction between positive emotion and trait-like stress reactivity was significant, with higher positive emotion associated with a weaker relationship between stress reactivity and negative emotion. This moderating effect was observed across low, moderate, and high cognitive performance groups; a three-way interaction further indicated that the moderating effect becomes stronger as cognitive performance increases. For cognitive decline, the moderating effect was significant only among individuals with relatively greater cognitive decline, although the three-way interaction was not significant. Conclusion Positive emotion may buffer the relationship between trait-level stress reactivity and negative emotion across the cognitive performance range, although this moderating effect appears weaker at lower cognitive performance. Findings for cognitive decline were less conclusive, as a subgroup-specific association among participants with greater decline was not confirmed when cognitive decline was analyzed as a continuous moderator.

Mediating role of phubbing in the relationship between emotion regulation and young adults' marital expectations

Abdullah Tunç; Zerrin Bölükbaşı Macit; Atakan Yiğit Acta Psychologica, 2026, Vol. 270, pp. 107865 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2026.107865

This study examined the associations between emotion regulation and marital expectations among unmarried young adults and whether these associations included statistically significant indirect associations through phubbing. Utilizing a cross-sectional correlational design, data were collected from 627 unmarried young adults aged 18-35 using the Marital Expectations Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and Generic Scale of Phubbing. Pearson correlation and bootstrap-based mediation analyses were conducted. Results indicated that marital expectations correlated positively with positive emotion regulation and negatively with phubbing, while negative emotion regulation was positively associated with phubbing. Bootstrap analyses identified statistically significant indirect associations through phubbing for both positive and negative emotion regulation. The negative emotion regulation model showed an inconsistent mediation pattern, with the direct and indirect associations operating in opposite directions. Supplementary analyses indicated that these indirect patterns remained when age and gender were controlled. These cross-sectional findings describe statistical associations and do not establish temporal or causal mediation. Overall, young adults' marital expectations are linked to both emotional processes and digital interpersonal attention patterns, highlighting the need to consider contemporary digital behaviors alongside developmental and sociodemographic influences in future relational research.

Sixty years of linguistic change in the poetry of a Zen practitioner: a longitudinal case study of Gary Snyder

Gary Snyder

Ping Guo; Wei Fan Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1879502

Can decades of Zen meditation leave measurable traces in the practitioner’s natural language? Long-term contemplative practice is widely understood to reshape emotion regulation, self-referential processing, and perceptual engagement, yet empirical research on these transformations has been fundamentally constrained by two limitations: an observation window of weeks to months at most, and an almost exclusive reliance on self-report and neuroimaging measures that cannot reach the automated, prereflective dimensions of psychological life most directly reshaped by sustained practice. This study applies computational quantitative content analysis to nine major poetry collections by the American Zen practitioner-poet Gary Snyder, spanning six decades (1959-2015), to test three directional hypotheses derived from core Zen concepts: affective settling ( ānxīn , H1), self-referential attenuation ( anātman , H2), and perceptual despecification ( ānimitta , H3). Each hypothesis is held against a rival explanation as a falsification reference. The results reveal career-long changes across three analytical domains: negative-emotion vocabulary declines monotonically while positive and neutral categories show no statistically detectable trend; first-person pronouns, somatic vocabulary, grammatical agency, and cognitive certainty converge in decline across four distinct linguistic layers; embodied sensory specificity thins systematically while vocabulary drifts toward greater abstraction. Changepoint detection offers descriptive corroboration of the periodization. A comparison with a contemporaneous non-practicing poet (Wendell Berry) is descriptive in evidential status: the affective and self-referential trends are significant in Snyder but not in Berry, direct tests of the between-poet differences do not yield differences that are robust across interval-construction methods, and sensory thinning appears in both poets and may reflect processes shared across long poetic careers. These findings constitute what is, to our knowledge, the longest longitudinal linguistic record of a verified long-term Zen practitioner–documenting career-long changes that are consistent with, though not attributable to, sustained practice–and demonstrate the distinctive methodological value of naturally produced creative texts as a comparatively non-reactive observational window for studying long-term contemplative transformation.
