Effects of Cyberbullying Exposure on Emotional Regulation and Mental Health in Adolescents

Aysha Zaba; Chethana R Acharya International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR), 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 10, pp. 1951-1954 https://doi.org/10.21275/sr261018200254

Cyberbullying has become an important concern for adolescent well-being because online harassment can continue beyond school settings and expose young people to repeated social stress. This study examined the relationships between cyberbullying exposure, emotion-regulation strategies, and mental health among adolescents. A quantitative, cross-sectional correlational design was used with 100 secondary-school adolescents aged 13-18 years (M = 15.42, SD = 1.38). Measures included the Cyber-Victimization Scale (CYBVICS), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and Early Adolescent Mental Health Scale (EAMHS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlations, and simple linear regression analyses were reported. Cyberbullying exposure was negatively correlated with cognitive reappraisal (r = -.42, p < .001) and mental health (r = -.58, p < .001), and positively correlated with expressive suppression (r = .48, p < .001). Cognitive reappraisal was positively associated with mental health (r = .51, p < .001), whereas expressive suppression was negatively associated with mental health (r = -.46, p < .001). Regression analysis indicated that cyberbullying exposure accounted for 33.6% of the variance in mental-health scores, R? = .336, F(1, 98) = 49.68, p < .001. The findings indicate meaningful associations among online victimization, emotion regulation, and adolescent well-being. Because the study is cross-sectional and relies on self-report measures, the findings do not establish causality.

The present study reports two independent investigations examining, respectively, the relationship between pornography consumption and paraphilic interests and sexual fantasies (Study 1), and the content of public commentary directed at apparently young female users on TikTok (Study 2). Study 1 examined how the frequency, duration and self-reported arousal associated with pornography consumption relate to paraphilic interests. A sample of 320 participants completed three validated measures: the Consumption of Pornography Scale–General (COPS-G), the Paraphilia Scale and the Sexual Fantasy Experience Scale (SFES). Spearman’s rho correlations found that greater pornography use and higher arousal were associated with overall paraphilic interest and with interests featuring sexually aggressive undertones. Study 2 used thematic analysis to examine 179 comments posted beneath 53 TikTok videos identified as featuring apparent minors, identifying five themes: (1) Deception, (2) Inappropriate Compliments, (3) Insults, (4) Invitations and Requests for Engagement and (5) Sexualized. Comments regularly referenced the young age or student identity of the creator. The two studies together, suggest that themes prominent in mainstream pornography, including sexual aggression and the sexualisation of youth, are echoed both in some individuals’ internalized interests and in unrelated public online discourse, without this establishing that pornography exposure causes either outcome.
