Deborah J. Moon; Ruijie Ma; Hyunjin Lee; Amanda Cruce; Youme Kim; Sophia Luckenbaugh; … Frontiers in Social Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4, pp. 1968540 https://doi.org/10.3389/frsps.2026.1968540

Background Rooted in positive psychology, human flourishing scholarship focuses on the presence of health and wellbeing beyond the absence of illness. Contemporary flourishing research has increasingly expanded its focus beyond individuals to larger systems, including families. Family flourishing is an emerging concept with limited clarity in its conceptualizations and measurements. This scoping review synthesized existing literature on the unit-level conceptualizations and operationalizations of family flourishing and wellbeing and examined the extent to which existing measures align with contemporary understandings of human flourishing. Methods Arksey and O'Malley's methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines were followed. Searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstracts, Academic Search Premier, and Web of Science. Eligible studies presented explicit unit-level conceptualizations or quantitative measures of family flourishing or wellbeing as a multidimensional construct. Only studies written in English and published since 2000 were included. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening, and data extraction were conducted by two independent researchers, while monitoring inter-coder reliability. Discrepancies were resolved through consensus in consultation with the PI. Data extraction utilized a standardized form for consistency, which was iteratively revised through discussion. Results The final sample included 13 studies, which represented diverse regions, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States. Studies were published between 2005 and 2025, with most studies published since 2020. Seven quantitative measures of family wellbeing were identified while no family flourishing measures were found. Conceptualizations represented diverse roots including Aristotelian eudaimonia, Indigenous cultural beliefs, and local spiritual teachings. While boundaries were often unclear, six broad categories of conceptualizations were identified, including relational/functional. eudaimonic/existential, hedonic/emotional, social/community, socioeconomic/environmental, and spiritual/religious domains. Relational/functional domains were most frequently covered while spiritual/religious domains were least frequently covered by existing measures. Most measures were developed more than a decade ago, and psychometric evidence beyond internal consistency was limited. Conclusion Family flourishing is an underdeveloped but promising area of scholarship. Further studies are needed to achieve greater conceptual clarity and to develop culturally responsive and psychometrically robust measures. Niken Bayu Argaheni; Tomasina Stacey; Billie Lever Taylor Women and Birth, 2026, Vol. 39, Issue 6, pp. 102411 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.wombi.2026.102411

BACKGROUND: Cultural beliefs, social expectations, and the quality of maternity care shape how women perceive stillbirth, cope with loss, and navigate their identity after bereavement. Understanding these experiences is essential for improving emotional support and respectful care. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise qualitative evidence regarding the psychosocial impact of stillbirth on women in LMIC contexts, and to examine how cultural, social, and healthcare factors shape women's perceptions and experiences of stillbirth. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in February 2026 across the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and EBSCO. Eligible studies were those that employed qualitative or mixed methods. Methodological quality was assessed using a standardised qualitative appraisal tool. Data were synthesised using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: Twenty-five studies across fourteen countries met the inclusion criteria. Five themes were identified: (1) cultural spiritual attributions of responsibility, (2) supportive versus isolating interactions, (3) silenced grief and social expectations, (4) from compassion to mistreatment: the spectrum of health worker influence, and (5) the crisis of identity in the disrupted journey of motherhood. These themes reveal complex emotional responses shaped by blame, stigma, social expectations, and experiences within the health system. DISCUSSION: Women's experiences of stillbirth are heavily influenced by culturally grounded interpretations of loss and by the quality of interpersonal and institutional support. These factors affect help-seeking, grieving, and future engagement with maternity services. CONCLUSION: Improving respectful communication, strengthening emotional support within maternity care, and addressing stigma through community-based approaches are essential to support women experiencing stillbirth in diverse cultural settings.

Exploring postpartum women’s experiences and levels of paranormal beliefs: a qualitative and descriptive perspective

Aysel Bülez; Mehtap Sönmez; Zeynep Kekeç; Gul Ozturk International Journal of Science Letters, 2026, Vol. 8, Issue 1, pp. 17-28 https://doi.org/10.38058/ijsl.1902840

Aim: This study aimed to explore women's self-reported paranormal experiences during the postpartum period, examine the cultural meanings attributed to these experiences, and descriptively assess levels of paranormal belief using the Paranormal Beliefs Scale (PBS).Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Qualitative data were collected through face-toface, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Quantitative data were collected using the PBS and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Forty-three postpartum women who reported paranormal or unusual visual experiences within the first 42 days after childbirth were recruited through snowball sampling. Results: Five themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: beliefs associated with the experiences, descriptions of perceived visual experiences, physical responses, psychological responses, and preventive practices. Participants commonly reported seeing black shadows, unfamiliar human-like figures, or animals, usually at night during transitions between wakefulness and sleep. Physical responses included immobility, palpitations, breathlessness, and sensations of suffocation, whereas psychological responses included fear, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and persistent distress. Participants also described religious, traditional, and medical coping practices. The mean PBS score was 27.6 ± 3.26.Conclusion: The findings suggest that women's interpretations of these experiences are shaped by cultural beliefs. Healthcare professionals should acknowledge such experiences without automatically attributing them to psychiatric pathology and provide culturally sensitive, evidence-based counselling to reduce fear and anxiety, discourage potentially harmful traditional practices, and promote maternal and infant wellbeing.
