Resolving the apparent paradox of multisensory expertise: coupling priors, common-cause priors, and how to distinguish among them

Perceptual expertise is widely assumed to refine multisensory perception, yet the empirical literature appears inconsistent. Trained musicians show narrower audiovisual temporal integration windows and quicker segregation, whereas experienced wine tasters seem more influenced by a wine's color in their aroma and flavor judgments than novices are. We argue that the inconsistency arises from a conflation of two formally distinct quantities: the prior probability that concurrent signals arise from a common source, and the coupling between the values of signals that share one. We present a generative model in which both are free parameters, along with channel precision and a decision criterion, that contains causal-inference and coupling-prior models as special cases. The model shows that the correlation between the values of two signals across an environment reflects only the product of the two priors, so that a correlation-tracking learner acquires the coupling when the signals always share a source, whereas separating the two priors requires representing causal structure; that binary common-source reports confound the common-cause prior with the decision criterion; that the coupling trades off against the measurement noise of the influencing channel unless its precision is measured independently; and that the two priors leave distinct signatures in how cross-modal influence varies with disparity. When the source is fixed, as for the color and odor of a wine, tighter coupling alone produces the conjunction of greater displacement by color and better discrimination between wines reported for experienced tasters, which no change in odor precision can produce. Simulations of a test battery combining continuous estimates, common-source reports and discrimination thresholds show that the parameters can be recovered, that a within-subject dissociation can be detected with conventional sample sizes under illustrative effect sizes, and that recovery fails in certain cases. The account yields a rule classifying environments by their base rate of common causation and their coupling strength, and the same ambiguity attends claims about altered multisensory processing in autism and aging. We also show that the most cited demonstration of expert susceptibility to color contains no expertise manipulation, and suggest that apparent expert biases may reflectwind calibration to real-world statistics.

Empathic writing feedback: The role of teacher empathy in undergraduate students' writing development

Zahra Zargaran Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 2026, Vol. 9, pp. 104436 https://doi.org/10.29140/ajal.2026.104436

Although feedback is widely regarded as one of the most influential variables in student learning, its effects on writing development remain highly variable and poorly understood, partly because the relational dimensions of feedback delivery have received limited empirical attention. This quasi-experimental, explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined whether an Empathic Feedback Protocol (EFP), operationalising teacher empathy through three theoretically grounded dimensions (Seeing, Understanding, and Caring), produces superior outcomes in writing quality, self-efficacy, and feedback receptivity compared to conventional rubric-based feedback. Post Foundation undergraduate students in a Technical Writing course at a university in Oman were assigned to experimental or comparison conditions across an eight-week email writing programme. Writing quality was assessed using an institutional rubric; self-efficacy and receptivity were measured at three time points using validated scales; and student perceptions of feedback empathy were assessed using the EFRS-S, an instrument developed for this study. Qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and written reflections were analysed through reflexive thematic analysis and integrated with quantitative findings via joint display. Results indicated large condition effects on writing quality, with the greatest gains on higher-order criteria. Self-efficacy and feedback receptivity trajectories diverged significantly across conditions after the midpoint, with the experimental group sustaining growth while the comparison group plateaued. Hierarchical regression revealed a theoretically meaningful dissociation: Understanding was the dominant predictor of writing quality, while Caring predicted motivational outcomes. Qualitative themes corroborated these patterns and surfaced an emergent metacognitive transfer effect, with students spontaneously applying the EFP framework as a self-monitoring strategy during drafting. Findings suggest that teacher empathy, when systematically operationalised, is a consequential and teachable pedagogical variable with direct implications for feedback practice in EFL technical writing contexts.

Trauma, the Fragmented Psyche, and the Cycle of Repetition in Narratives of Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou

Elli May Ella GPH-International Journal of Social Science and Humanities Research, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 8 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23079766

Abstract This paper examines trauma as a psychological wound that can affect memory, identity, behaviour, relationships, and the individual's sense of safety. It focuses particularly on childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, repression, traumatic memory, repetition, sexual violence, and the struggle to return to a sense of wholeness. Drawing on the ideas of Revital Goodman, Sigmund Freud, Susan L. Bloom, Cathy Caruth, George Hartman, Sándor Ferenczi, Jay B. Frankel, and Kali Tal, the paper considers how traumatic experiences can remain active long after the original event has ended. It argues that childhood trauma is especially significant because it can shape the developing sense of self and influence how individuals respond to later experiences. Maternal care is considered an important source of security, while parental failure and abandonment can leave the child vulnerable to further trauma. The paper also examines dissociation as a protective response to overwhelming experiences and explores how repressed memories may return through repetition, flashbacks, behaviour, and storytelling. The idea of a Sisyphean cycle is used to describe the repeated struggle of the trauma survivor to escape the past while continually returning to it. Particular attention is given to sexual violence and the experiences of women, especially African American women, whose psychological wounds may be intensified by racial and social oppression. The paper concludes that trauma may fragment the psyche, but remembering, narrating, and confronting painful experiences can also become part of the movement towards healing and psychological reintegration. Keywords: trauma, childhood trauma, maternal abandonment, dissociation, fragmented psyche, memory, repression, repetition, sexual violence, African American women, healing
