Semantic Analysis of Lafaz Al-Birr in QS Al-Mumlahanah: 8: Reconstruction of Tolerance between Kindness and Justice

Dzikra Zakiah; Rudi Edwaldo Jasmit; Akmal Khairi al-Afkar Journal For Islamic Studies, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 4

This study examines the semantic network of the term Al-Birr in the Qur'an in order to formulate a theological foundation for inclusive tolerance. The study is grounded in the reality of human plurality as a sunnatullah (divinely ordained principle), which necessitates positive interaction among people, while the understanding of Al-Birr has often been confined to the dimension of individual piety. Employing a qualitative library research method and a thematic (maudhu‘i) Qur’anic interpretation approach, this study analyzes 31 occurrences of the root word ب-ر-ر in the Qur'an. Semantic analysis is used to explore its basic lexical meaning as well as its syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships. The findings reveal that Al-Birr is derived from the concept of Al-Barr (vast land), which conveys the meanings of expansiveness, steadfastness, and consistency in goodness. Semantically, Al-Birr is closely related to Iman (faith) as its foundation, Al-Taqwa (God-consciousness) as its inner orientation, and Al-Ihsan (spiritual excellence) as the perfection of spiritual quality. It also stands in contrast to Al-Itsm (sin) and Al-‘Udwan (transgression). The findings from Qur'an 60:8 (QS Al-Mumtahanah: 8) affirm that showing tolerance toward non-Muslims who do not engage in hostility against Muslims constitutes an ideal form of righteousness. Furthermore, the relationship between Al-Birr and Al-Qisth (justice) demonstrates that tolerance in Islam is not merely a passive attitude but rather an active, just, and sustainable expression of social piety. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of linguistic analysis and socio-religious context to construct a more comprehensive understanding of tolerance for multicultural societies.

Story for Every Fall: Adam and Eve as a Narrative of Healing and Return

Merve ALTINLI MACIC; Süeda Akgün Spiritual Psychology and Counseling, 2026, Vol. 11, Issue 3, pp. 349-381 https://doi.org/10.37898/spiritualpc.1864841

This article examines the narrative of Adam and Eve from the perspectives of psychology of religion and spiritual counseling and care, drawing on the therapeutic functions of sacred texts. Grounded in the long-standing healing power of narratives, bibliotherapy is discussed within the context of sacred texts, with particular attention to spiritual bibliotherapy’s capacity to access individuals’ moral, emotional, and existential processes. Within this framework, the study relates the Adam and Eve narrative to the concept of moral injury, which has gained increasing prominence in contemporary psychological literature, and explores the potential of sacred narratives in processes of spiritual repair. The research adopts a qualitative approach, employing purposive literature review and conceptual analysis. Classical and modern interpretations of the Adam and Eve narrative in the Torah and the Qur’an, together with literature on psychology of religion and moral injury, were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework. Four core themes were identified: will and responsibility; transgression and rebellion; shame and alienation; and hope and redemption. The findings demonstrate that the narrative makes visible the moral and spiritual ruptures following value violations and offers a meaningful foundation of hope for spiritual healing through confrontation and repentance. The study concludes that the Adam and Eve narrative can serve as a bibliotherapeutic resource in spiritual care.
