Abstract This study examines whether and how RME can be performed as an epistemic object to broaden business schools’ education on climate change. The research builds on a qualitative case study involving 10 Finnish business schools. The analysis reveals that RME is performed as both an epistemic object and a boundary object, with different implications for its embeddedness within institutions. Our findings show how accreditations have introduced RME as a boundary object enforcing performativity around sustainability themes yet enabling disciplines to maintain their distinct or limited roles. At the same time, RME is met with both resistance and compliance, depending on how well the object fits with disciplinary boundaries and career trajectories. Lastly, as an epistemic object, RME encourages co‐reflexivity, which is essential for climate‐proofing business schools. We discuss the possibilities of a hybrid orientation of RME as both a boundary object and an epistemic object for enforcing climate‐orientation in management education.
Introduction Climate change impacts are not gender-neutral, yet standard reporting relies on aggregate household indicators that obscure intra-household power dynamics and diverse individual vulnerabilities. This review assesses gender-differentiated climate resilience in rural farming households and evaluates the extent to which empirical evidence aligns with the gender-responsive, participatory and transparent mandates of the Paris Agreement. Methods Peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, AJOL and Google Scholar following PRISMA guidelines. A total of 117 eligible studies were screened and analysed thematically using a hybrid inductive–deductive approach in R. Methodological quality was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and evidence coverage was characterised using GRADE-CERQual adequacy criteria. Policy alignment was mapped against Articles 2.1b, 7.1, 7.5, 11 and 13. Results Eight interrelated resilience domains were identified: livelihood, water, food, ecological, social, community, agricultural and economic. The review reveals a significant implementation gap between the Paris Agreement and ground-level reality. While Articles 7.5, 11 and 13 emphasise equity and participation, resilience is often achieved through paradoxes of depletion. We propose the Gendered Resilience Paradox Framework (GRPF), a novel theoretical model encompassing resilience as a distributive process rather than a neutral capacity. The framework identifies five interlocking mechanisms—workload-resilience, biological buffer, mobility-stability, restoration-marginalisation and hydrological time-poverty—through which household resilience is achieved via the systematic transfer of adaptation costs onto women’s bodies, time and agency. These paradoxes form a self-reinforcing Depletion Cycle, creating a resilience debt that may compound intergenerationally. A co-occurrence network (n = 117) shows that workload-resilience is the most frequently documented paradox (53.0%) and reveals that embodied paradoxes remain the least studied. Articles 2.1b and 7.1 show partial alignment; Articles 7.5, 11 and 13 show misalignment. Men also face climate-related hardships, including psychosocial stress, migration-induced vulnerabilities and systemic exclusion from aid. Discussion Resilience achieved through depletion is not resilience but a debt. Closing the implementation gap requires distributional indicators, time-releasing infrastructure, secure land tenure, and bundled interventions that address multiple paradoxes simultaneously. The article presents the challenges of civic education and a civic upbringing in the era of the transforming of society in response to climate change. These challenges include not only support for mitigation and adaptation measures but also support for maintaining or deepening democratic processes and institutions.Following the UNESCO call for educational transformation (2021), responsible civic education was defined as education that leads students to support pro-climate measures (a shared truth and a vision of the future) but also to embrace democratic civil attitudes.According to UNESCO, education should lead to peaceful activism that criticises and confronts the power structures that disrupt or prevent shared truths about a possible future. The authors therefore describe the transformations in civil disobedience (CD) and theoretical reflections on CD that appreciate its importance and potential for promoting pro-climatic measures. They also present other civil approaches and examples of addressing the climate crisis, specifically examining the democratic limits and positive aspects of the concepts of environmental and ecological citizenship, deliberative democracy, and eco-modernism.They then present the concepts of civic education and offer answers to the question of what parameters responsible civic education should meet.First, they show the current interdependence between the subject of civic education and climate change. They then present Westheimer's models of civic education in relation to sustainability and the deepening of democratic processes. Here, the model of a justice-oriented citizen is presented in relation to the concept of responsible citizenship, where responsibility is extended to that of taking action for the benefit of society as a whole.
Climate change is intrinsically linked to gender. Evidence shows women face the greatest impacts of climate change due to higher poverty presence, reliance on land, family responsibilities, and less societal power. Our study uses Carol Bacchi's “What is the Problem Represented to Be?” (WPR) approach to analyse climate change and gender policies in Mauritius, a small island state. We apply a two-dimensional theory of gender justice that foregrounds both economic distribution and social recognition. The findings highlight the need for a transformative approach to climate policymaking that moves beyond tokenistic gender mainstreaming to address the structural and socio-cultural inequalities that shape climate vulnerability. For small island states like Mauritius, this requires strengthening locally led, intersectional climate governance and reducing dependence on externally driven policy agendas to advance both climate resilience and gender justice.
Digital technology has reshaped higher education and the workplace, increasing the need for continuous skills development while expanding opportunities for flexible and accessible learning. Continuing education has therefore become an important avenue for professionals to develop knowledge and competencies in response to changing demands. However, access to online courses does not necessarily ensure sustained engagement or completion. This study examines how learner-centered course design can support adult learner motivation and persistence in professional continuing education, using a course offered by the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) as a case. A qualitative case study approach was used, supported by descriptive analysis of institutional data from three successive offerings of the Integrating Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management in Policies, Plans and Investments toward Inclusive and Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development (CCA&DRM) course conducted from 2025 to 2026. Data included learner profiles, enrollment and completion records, course evaluations, implementation records, and two completer reflections. Completion rates increased from 23% to 55% and 88% across the three offerings, while the course received an overall mean evaluation of 4.63. Learners' reported motivations included professional development, academic preparation, practical application, environmental advocacy, and sustainability. Completer reflections further highlighted the value of relevant content, learning resources, recognition, and interaction in supporting learner engagement and persistence. The findings suggest that learner-centered continuing education should align course content with learners' goals, provide opportunities for authentic application, and strengthen interaction and support. The study highlights the potential of iterative, learner-centered course design in supporting adult learner motivation and persistence in professional online continuing education.
Global warming and climate change severely impact ecosystems and human safety, positioning the carbon credit market as a vital tool for emission reduction. This study aimed to identify necessary skills, develop a strategic plan, and construct a handbook for digital-age leaders in industrial carbon credit trading. Utilizing the Delphi method and a focus group discussion, data were gathered from 19 experts and stakeholders. Analysis combined qualitative thematic sorting with quantitative median and interquartile range (IQR) metrics. The findings revealed five core management skills (planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, controlling), detailed into 25 sub-parts and 125 minor parts. This model integrates environmental knowledge with digital technology to enhance measurement, reporting, and verification efficiency. Experts verified the model's appropriateness, resulting in a two-part handbook outlining 12 execution pathways. Specialists confirmed the handbook is highly suitable for leadership development.

Africa is central to the world's future. The continent holds immense human potential, vast natural wealth, and a very young population. Yet, historical trauma from colonialism and ongoing neocolonial practices still hold African nations back. Unfair global financial rules, high borrowing costs, and severe climate impacts create deep systemic barriers. Africa contributes barely 4% of global carbon emissions, yet suffers massive economic losses from climate change. The concept of "Africa Rising" must move beyond simple economic metrics. It requires structural justice, genuine self-directed development, and local academic agency. This special issue grounds these global debates in concrete African realities through eight insightful studies. Their authors offer practical solutions to pressing challenges: curbing conflict through trade and gender inclusion, combining indigenous justice rituals with state law, fighting carbon market fraud, and introducing novel economic models to combat financial exclusion. Other studies advocate for youth civic agency through non-formal education, pharmaceutical sovereignty to lower medicine prices, and reframing forced migration as a driver of regional integration through the African Union's Free Movement Protocol. Recent global governance reforms, such as the African Union joining the G20, now G21, offer a vital platform for procedural justice. However, a seat at the table is not enough on its own. Africa must activate its internal institutions, financial markets, and academic community. As demonstrated by the authors in this collection, local experts provide the essential evidence needed to drive real progress. Only through genuine partnership, ethical global frameworks, and grounded African agency can the continent realise its true development potential.
Contemporary science education emphasizes the role of content knowledge (CK) in students’ informal reasoning (IR) within socio-scientific issues (SSI). However, students may not automatically apply scientific knowledge when reasoning about complex and open-ended SSI. Drawing on literature on modeling competence (MC), this study examined whether MC, operationalized through students’ modeling practices, statistically mediated the association between foundational scientific CK and science-based IR in a climate-related SSI task. 443 tenth-grade students participated in an online inquiry activity on climate change and methane emissions. Data were collected through a standardized CK assessment, a stock-and-flow MC task, and a written policy decision-making IR task. Results showed that students performed relatively well on foundational scientific CK and basic modeling practices involving source–sink identification and net-flow calculation, but showed weaker performance in model prediction and science-based IR. Path analysis indicated significant positive associations among CK, MC, and IR. The indirect association from CK to IR through MC was statistically significant and accounted for approximately 45.8% of the total CK–IR association. These findings suggest that students’ MC-related modeling practices may represent a meaningful statistical pathway linking foundational scientific CK and science-based IR. The study highlights the potential value of integrating content instruction with modeling practices in SSI learning and supporting IR that more explicitly incorporates scientific evidence and causal explanation.
The call for papers for the 2025 PESA conference referenced our ‘increasingly pluralistic, post-truth, post-reality and divided world’ and the ‘existential problems’ that we face—noting climate change, AI, populism and the decline in ethical and reasoned discourse. The assumption contained in the call was that equipping young people with the ability to engage in reasoned deliberation is more pressing than ever before. And certainly, educating for critical thinking—thoughtfulness, coherence, rationality—is often held up as a silver bullet to heal our seemingly ailing and divided world. Perhaps rightly so. But here, I apply some critical thinking to the claim. Drawing on many years of involvement in teaching philosophy and ethics at the tertiary level, I reflect on what teaching critical thinking skills can, and cannot, achieve. I question the pervasive ‘crisis’ framing in education, suggesting that constant existential rhetoric can leave students anxious and less resilient and I argue for some guiding principles: teach students how to think, not what to think; and guard against ideological narrowing, ensuring critical thinking is genuinely open to diverse perspectives, including those that make us uncomfortable. Rather than a cure-all, critical thinking should be taught as a discipline grounded in humility, charity, and the courage to engage with difference. Its power lies not in solving every societal problem, but in equipping students to reason together in good faith—even when the stakes are existential.
