Children with special educational needs and family polyvictimization in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional survey of families

Chengrui Wu; Qiqi Chen; Ko Ling Chan Scientific Reports, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-026-77816-8

Families raising children with special educational needs (SEN) may experience adversities. However, previous research has focused on individual children, and limited research has examined family polyvictimization (FPV) and SEN correlates from a family-centered perspective. This study analyzed data from a family-based survey conducted in Hong Kong between August 2022 and March 2023, comparing families with and without children with SEN. A total of 1,400 respondents participated (mean age = 39.75 years, SD = 6.99; 75.4% female), each representing one participating family. Of these respondents, 130 reporting children with SEN and 1,270 without. Respondents provided information on sociodemographic characteristics, family violence and FPV experiences, and health outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression identified factors associated with having children with SEN. Lifetime FPV prevalence was higher among families reporting children with SEN than among other families (23.1% vs. 8.2%). After adjustment for sociodemographic, family-context, psychosocial-attitude, and social-support variables, FPV was associated with higher odds of SEN-reporting family status (aOR = 2.630, 95% CI 1.529–4.524). Other adjusted correlates included lower family income, male dominance, violence socialization, lower perceived social support, violence against adult parents, children, and older family members, poorer respondent physical health, and lower child quality of life. These findings underscore the importance of viewing families raising children with SEN as a window for identifying family violence and call for early detection, systematic screening, and family-centered interventions. Future research should examine these associations over time and strengthen family-based support.

MODERN STRATEGIES FOR THE EARLY PREVENTION OF MENTAL DEVELOPMENT DISORDERS IN YOUNG CHILDREN: CLINICAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MEDICO-SOCIAL ASPECTS

H.M. Azimova Journal of modern medicine, 2026, Vol. 4, Issue 15, pp. 134-141 https://doi.org/10.67519/nshr.ztj.2026.15.019

Problems associated with mental development during the first years of life remain among the most significant medical and social challenges, since this period is characterized by particularly high neuroplasticity, while timely identification of possible developmental deviations is of crucial importance. The study is aimed at systematizing modern strategies for the early prevention of mental developmental disorders, taking into account clinical, psychological, and social aspects. The major biological, perinatal, family, and social factors that may influence the development of the child’s cognitive, emotional, speech, and behavioral domains are analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on the early identification of developmental delays, assessment of emotional interaction between parents and the child, as well as detection of unfavorable conditions in the family environment, chronic stress, attachment deficits, and insufficient developmental stimulation. The need for interdisciplinary cooperation among pediatricians, child neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, primary healthcare professionals, and social service specialists is emphasized. Contemporary effective preventive measures should focus not only on disorders that have already become clinically apparent, but also on the active identification of high-risk groups, regular monitoring of the child’s developmental status, and the earliest possible initiation of corrective and developmental intervention programs. Such a comprehensive approach can improve the effectiveness of early support, reduce the severity of subsequent cognitive and emotional-behavioral problems, and contribute to better social adaptation of the child and overall well-being of the family.

L2 exposure intensity modulates the time course of verbal humor comprehension: An ERP study

Fan Peng; Zhou Rong; Musi Xie Bilingualism Language and Cognition, 2026, pp. 1-14 https://doi.org/10.1017/s1366728926101850

Abstract Understanding verbal humor in a second language (L2) is a hallmark of advanced communicative competence, yet its time course remains unclear. This study investigates the role of L2 exposure intensity in humor comprehension. Forty-two English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners (Intense vs. Limited Exposure) read jokes in which identical punchlines followed humorous or coherent setups and judged funniness. Behavioral results showed that responses were slower to humorous than to coherent endings, and accuracy was higher in the Intense Exposure group than in the Limited Exposure group. ERPs showed a larger N400 to humorous endings compared to coherent endings. A P600 effect to humorous endings was observed in the Intense Exposure group but not in the Limited Exposure group, suggesting greater engagement of reinterpretation under Intense Exposure. These findings support a conditioned two-stage model of L2 humor in which early detection is broadly preserved, whereas later reinterpretation depends on L2 exposure intensity.
