Scrolling, Delaying, and Stressing: How Social Media and Procrastination Shape Test Anxiety

Dr. Sana Sadiq; Maham Saeed; Hina Usman Pakistan Journal of Positive Psychology, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 9, pp. 48-56 https://doi.org/10.67785/pjpp.9.399

The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication and information sharing; however, excessive use can promote procrastination and avoidance of academic tasks, contributing to increased test anxiety among students. This study explores how social media use and procrastination contribute to test anxiety among the said population. A cross-sectional design was employed with sample of 284 university students (M = 110, F = 160) with a mean X age=20.8 years selected through convenience. Social media was measured through Social Media Use Questionnaire (Xanidis and Brignell, 2016), procrastination was assessed using the Lay Procrastination Scale (Lay, 1986) and test anxiety was evaluated by Westside Test Anxiety Scale (Driscoll, 2004). Data was analyzed using correlation and regression analysis. The results revealed significant positive correlation between social media use, procrastination, and test anxiety. Regression analysis showed that both the use of social media and procrastination significantly forecasted test anxiety, indicating that an increased occurrence of problematic digital engagement and reduced self-control leads to academic stress. These findings highlight the fact that university-level interventions encourage healthier digital habits and stronger individual control of students. Also, it emphasizes the need for parents and educators to promote effective study habits and self-regulation, as excessive social media use limits students’ available study time.

Goal‐Driven Dynamic Change in Parental Monitoring and Adolescent Information Management: A Novel Conceptual Model and Simulation

Nancy E. Darling; Beth Hardie Journal of Adolescence, 2026, pp. jad.70277 https://doi.org/10.1002/jad.70277

To be effective, adolescents' parents must have basic knowledge about what their children do, who they spend their time with, and what they care about. There is broad consensus that parental monitoring facilitates adolescent information sharing and that information sharing is the most important factor predicting parents' knowledge of their adolescents' lives (Liu et al. 2020). Nonetheless, under some circumstances, vicious cycles can develop in which adolescents react to parents' attempts to gain information by becoming more secretive and parents, in turn, respond to adolescents' secrecy by becoming more intrusive (Hawk et al. 2013, 2016). Despite developmentalists' fundamental interest in the study of change, most current conceptual models of monitoring are static. Specifically, theories have little to say about what would initiate change in stable family systems. This paper integrates what we have learned about parental monitoring, adolescent information sharing, and parents' knowledge in the last decades (e.g., Gingo 2024; Liu et al. 2020) with older models of parenting practice, style, and adolescents' willingness to be socialized (Cumsille et al. 2010; Darling and Steinberg 1993). It then incorporates insights from a model of monitoring borrowed from criminology (Hardie 2021a, 2022, 2024). This integrated model focuses attention on parents' goals and their ability to assess the success of their efforts as a mechanism driving change. A series of deterministic dynamic systems models illustrates predictions from this model about how parental monitoring and knowledge, adolescent information sharing, and outcomes unfold over time under different circumstances.

Bringing Everyone to the Table: An Experimental Study of LLM-Facilitated Group Decision Making

Mohammed Alsobay; David M. Rothschild; Jake M. Hofman; Daniel G. Goldstein Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-36 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816907

Group decision-making often suffers from uneven information sharing, hindering decision quality. While large language models (LLMs) have been widely studied as aids for individuals, their potential to support groups of users, potentially as facilitators, is relatively underexplored. We present a pre-registered randomized experiment with 1,475 participants assigned to 281 live groups completing a hidden profile task—selecting an optimal city for a hypothetical sporting event—under one of four facilitation conditions: no facilitation, a one-time message prompting information sharing, a human facilitator, or an LLM (GPT-4o) facilitator. We find that LLM facilitation increased information shared within a discussion by raising the minimum level of engagement with the task among group members, and that these gains came at limited cost in terms of participants’ attitudes towards the task, their group, or their facilitator. Whether by human or AI, there was no significant effect of facilitation on the final decision outcome, suggesting that even substantial but partial increases in information sharing were insufficient to overcome the hidden profile effect studied. To support the design and evaluation of LLM-mediated group decision-making systems, we release our data and our experimental platform, the Group-AI Interaction Laboratory (GRAIL), as an open-source tool.
