This study examined sustainability-oriented school leadership, environmental management practices, and climate resilience among selected school heads in Sapa-Sapa I District, Tawi-Tawi, as a basis for developing a Sustainable School Governance Framework. Anchored in the Whole-Institution Approach to Education for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Educational Leadership, and Organizational Climate Resilience, the study employed a descriptive-correlational design using a structured five-point Likert-scale questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Kendall's tau-b correlation were applied to 12 school-head response profiles. The illustrative results indicated High levels of sustainability-oriented leadership (M = 3.55) and environmental management practices (M = 3.43), while climate resilience was rated Moderate (M = 3.33). Limited financial resources (66.67%), insufficient training (58.33%), inadequate infrastructure (50.00%), and limited technological support (41.67%) emerged as major challenges. A significant positive relationship was observed between leadership and environmental management (τ = 0.467, p = 0.048), while relationships involving climate resilience were not statistically significant. A preliminary Sustainable School Governance Framework was proposed, emphasizing strategic leadership, environmental resource management, disaster preparedness, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement. The study recommends strengthening institutional monitoring, resource conservation, capacity-building initiatives, and learning continuity mechanisms, subject to validation using actual survey data. The study aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Its potential sustainability impact involves strengthening environmental responsibility, institutional resilience, collaborative governance, and climate-responsive educational management in island-based school communities.

Beyond vulnerability: a review of gendered resilience, Paris agreement and rural farmers’ adaptation

Tendai Maparara; Wendy Mutsa Chiota; Tendai Madanzi; Raymond Mugandani; Paramu Mafongoya Frontiers in Climate, 2026, Vol. 8, pp. 1934199 https://doi.org/10.3389/fclim.2026.1934199

Introduction Climate change impacts are not gender-neutral, yet standard reporting relies on aggregate household indicators that obscure intra-household power dynamics and diverse individual vulnerabilities. This review assesses gender-differentiated climate resilience in rural farming households and evaluates the extent to which empirical evidence aligns with the gender-responsive, participatory and transparent mandates of the Paris Agreement. Methods Peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, AJOL and Google Scholar following PRISMA guidelines. A total of 117 eligible studies were screened and analysed thematically using a hybrid inductive–deductive approach in R. Methodological quality was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and evidence coverage was characterised using GRADE-CERQual adequacy criteria. Policy alignment was mapped against Articles 2.1b, 7.1, 7.5, 11 and 13. Results Eight interrelated resilience domains were identified: livelihood, water, food, ecological, social, community, agricultural and economic. The review reveals a significant implementation gap between the Paris Agreement and ground-level reality. While Articles 7.5, 11 and 13 emphasise equity and participation, resilience is often achieved through paradoxes of depletion. We propose the Gendered Resilience Paradox Framework (GRPF), a novel theoretical model encompassing resilience as a distributive process rather than a neutral capacity. The framework identifies five interlocking mechanisms—workload-resilience, biological buffer, mobility-stability, restoration-marginalisation and hydrological time-poverty—through which household resilience is achieved via the systematic transfer of adaptation costs onto women’s bodies, time and agency. These paradoxes form a self-reinforcing Depletion Cycle, creating a resilience debt that may compound intergenerationally. A co-occurrence network (n = 117) shows that workload-resilience is the most frequently documented paradox (53.0%) and reveals that embodied paradoxes remain the least studied. Articles 2.1b and 7.1 show partial alignment; Articles 7.5, 11 and 13 show misalignment. Men also face climate-related hardships, including psychosocial stress, migration-induced vulnerabilities and systemic exclusion from aid. Discussion Resilience achieved through depletion is not resilience but a debt. Closing the implementation gap requires distributional indicators, time-releasing infrastructure, secure land tenure, and bundled interventions that address multiple paradoxes simultaneously. Towards a resilient learning ecosystem in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria: Integrating ecological systems theory, resilience theory, and the social-ecological systems framework

Asueni Oyaba Aminu Kano Academic Scholars Association Multidisciplinary Journal, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 2, pp. 284-296 https://doi.org/10.64726/yqam8567

Education in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa State, faces persistent vulnerability to environmental, infrastructural and socio-economic shocks-annual floods, riverine isolation, poor school infrastructure, and weak community ownership-leading to disrupted learning continuity and low retention. The paper contends that resilient education extends beyond the confine of a school-centric model and requires a robust, strengthened learning ecosystem. Through an integrative review of literature and the theoretical synthesis of Bronfenbrenner, Ecological System Theory, Epstein, Overlapping Spheres of Influence, and Resilient Theory, conceptualized as Yenagoa Resilient Learning Ecosystem Model (YRLEM). The model places the learner at the Centre of six interconnected pillars/layers: Immediate Learning Environment/Resilient learner: (1) Community Engagement Pillar, (2) Technology and Digital Access Pillar, (3) Environment and Climate Resilience Pillars (4) Infrastructure and Schools Pillars (5) Governance and Policy Pillars (6) Livelihood and Skills Pillars. It argues that by intentionally engaging indigenous institutions-traditional rulers, CDCs, women and youth groups, and SBMCs-and fostering structured multi-stakeholder collaboration between government, oil and gas companies, tertiary institutions, NGOs, and faith based-organizations, educations can be transformed from a fragile service into a community owned resilient system. The paper contributes a context-specific framework for policymakers, the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board, and development partners, and advances propositions for future empirical validation in the Niger delta context

Embedding far transfer in higher education: A fractal systems model for adaptive expertise and equity in STEM learning

Doug Havard Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-026-09127-2

STEM-focused higher education systems worldwide face increasing pressure to prepare learners for complex, ill-structured challenges, from climate resilience to AI ethics, that demand adaptive expertise and integrative thinking. Yet most higher education environments remain oriented toward near transfer, emphasizing the application of knowledge within familiar boundaries more consistently than flexible reasoning across diverse contexts. This essay advances the Fractal Systems Model (FSM), an equity-centered conceptual framework that integrates cognitive, sociocultural, and systems-theoretical perspectives to examine how higher education systems might be designed to support adaptive expertise. FSM reconceptualizes far transfer as a potentially designable system property shaped by recursively aligned learning processes across educational scales. Drawing on research in cognitive science, situated learning, equity studies, and Discipline-Based Education Research, the model specifies how opportunities for abstraction, integration, and recontextualization can recur across the micro, meso, and macro levels of higher education. FSM further proposes that alignment across these levels may strengthen opportunities for far transfer and adaptive expertise while reducing reliance on isolated courses or selective enrichment experiences. The model offers researchers, practitioners, and policymakers an empirically testable systems framework for examining how equitable learning ecosystems can be designed to support adaptive expertise for the complex challenges of the twenty-first century.

Gender mainstreaming in climate change policy: opportunities and challenges for gender justice in Mauritius

Pratima Sambajee; K A Appadoo; S. Bundhoo-Deenoo Development in Practice, 2026, pp. 1-12 https://doi.org/10.1080/09614524.2026.2744873

Climate change is intrinsically linked to gender. Evidence shows women face the greatest impacts of climate change due to higher poverty presence, reliance on land, family responsibilities, and less societal power. Our study uses Carol Bacchi's “What is the Problem Represented to Be?” (WPR) approach to analyse climate change and gender policies in Mauritius, a small island state. We apply a two-dimensional theory of gender justice that foregrounds both economic distribution and social recognition. The findings highlight the need for a transformative approach to climate policymaking that moves beyond tokenistic gender mainstreaming to address the structural and socio-cultural inequalities that shape climate vulnerability. For small island states like Mauritius, this requires strengthening locally led, intersectional climate governance and reducing dependence on externally driven policy agendas to advance both climate resilience and gender justice.
