Di Zi Gui , a Qing-era moral primer, is discussed in contemporary Chinese family education, school moral education, and classical-recitation initiatives. Existing accounts document heterogeneous uses but do not establish their current prevalence or effects on children’s autonomy. This Hypothesis and Theory article develops a conditional model through close reading of 34 purposively selected precept groups from one modern working edition and comparison with psychological research from other contexts. Textual evidence, theoretical inference, and predictions requiring empirical testing are distinguished throughout. Adultcentrism identifies a possible asymmetry in interpretive authority; self-determination theory supplies the core distinction between controlled compliance and endorsed commitment. The proposed developmental focus is middle childhood, approximately 8–12 years, without assuming that findings from other age groups transfer directly. Three candidate pathways concern the permitted form of action, the motivational basis of conformity, and the legitimacy and expression of affect: behavioral standardization, compliance reinforcement, and emotional suppression through moral absolutization. Their operation is hypothesized to depend on enactment and children’s acceptance, negotiation, reinterpretation, selective appropriation, strategic compliance, or resistance. Autonomy is treated as a culturally situated, relational capacity, not as independence from family obligations. Five propositions specify an exposure-only baseline comparison, distinct mediators and moderators, and autonomy-related outcomes. Philosophy for Children is considered a possible moderator only when children’s contributions can consequentially alter interpretation or practice. The article offers an auditable interpretive framework, not evidence of established mechanisms: it contains no original participant data, direct observations of current teaching, or estimates of prevalence or effect size. Its contribution is a differentiated research agenda for testing how the same text may be enacted and understood differently.
