Effective behavioural regulation strategies as support for children with autism spectrum disorder within a mainstream context

Bianca van der Westhuizen; Elsa Marilise de Carvalho Etokabeka; Melanie Carmen Moen International Journal of Studies in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 3, pp. 43-51 https://doi.org/10.66434/ijspsy.v6i3.585

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most common disabilities in South African schools. However, there is still limited information about children with ASD and their schooling needs in South Africa. Teachers may find it particularly taxing to address behavioral challenges while simultaneously seeking to provide fair and accessible learning opportunities for all learners. This study identifies effective behavioural strategies to help manage the challenging behaviour of learners with ASD. The study conducted observations and semi-structured interviews as part of a qualitative multiple-case study design. The data were analysed inductively, and the results revealed that teachers relied largely on their own informal strategies. These included attempts to meet the child's individual needs, providing positive reinforcement to improve behavioural regulation, practicing positive communication, and using structured routines and regulation breaks. The implementation of these strategies was carried out without formal training or systematic guidance. Learner facilitators also provided valuable support to learners with ASD. These approaches address the inclusion of learners with unique learning capabilities in mainstream learning environments through teacher initiative. This was done to address behavioural challenges in populations with limited systemic support. Given the exploratory, small-scale nature of this study, findings are intended to offer in-depth insight rather than generalisable conclusions. Additionally, recommendations are provided to assist mainstream schools and teacher training.

Inclusive of whom? Access, equity and instrumental music education for those with disability

Achieving equality in music education for people with disability calls for transformative changes to attitudes, structures and norms. Segregation and streaming remains prevalent in instrumental music education, gatekeeping access and opportunity to mainstream education opportunities. The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, Article 24) ascribes access to inclusive education for people with disability on an equal basis, with the aim of fully developing human potential. Despite this, academic theorising about inclusive education still limits how this may be practically and philosophically applied in music education. Inclusion in instrumental music education is further limited by a culture of performance excellence rather than equity and enrichment of all, and a focus on music performance outcomes rather than a deep and holistic education experience gleaned from music making and participation. Significant EDI initiatives that aim to foster inclusive environments and practices are considered and drawn to music education contexts, in particular instrumental music education in Australia, where access for students with disability at the secondary level is severely limited. Our critique extends to praxial and philosophical considerations concerning the role of education in instrumental music in schools, accessibility, and social justice considerations educators should consider in devising of inclusive curricula, pedagogies and engagement.

Empathy and emotional competence in deaf and hard-of-hearing and hearing preschoolers

Carolien J. Rieffe; Brenda M. S. da Silva; Yung‐Ting Tsou; Claudia Alessandra Libbi; Johan H. M. Frijns; Guida Veiga Frontiers in Developmental Psychology, 2026, Vol. 4 https://doi.org/10.3389/fdpys.2026.1957507

Empathy is an important skill for social bonding, and thus can greatly affect children's daily social lives. Due to various obstructions when entering a predominantly hearing environment, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children might face restricted opportunities for developing emotional competence, which in turn may affect their empathic skills. The current study examined the extent to which the three main empathy layers that can be observed in young children (i.e., emotion contagion, attention to others' emotions, and prosocial actions) were related to emotional competence (emotion recognition, regulation and vocabulary) in DHH and hearing preschoolers attending mainstream education (kindergarten) in Portugal. A total of 181 preschoolers (32 DHH and 149 hearing) participated. Caregivers rated children's empathy, and three indices for emotional competence (emotion recognition, emotion regulation, emotion vocabulary). Additionally, hearing and language related factors were collected in the DHH group and included as control variables. One-tailed independent samples t -tests showed similar levels of empathy, emotion recognition and emotion regulation for both groups, but DHH children scored lower on emotion vocabulary than their hearing peers. Additionally, hierarchical regression analyses showed that better skills in emotional competence (all three indices) were associated with more empathic behaviors (prosocial actions) toward a person in distress in both groups. Outcomes are discussed in the context of social and emotional learning and the importance of equity in mainstream schools, addressing the special needs of DHH children or other children from marginalized groups.
