Background and objectives Health literacy in adulthood plays a major role in an individual’s ability to use health information to benefit their health. Social determinants in early childhood initiate the development of health literacy through newborn brain development and oral language acquisition. Both of these processes are promoted by stimulation from everyday interactions with parents/caregivers at home and in the community. Unequal access to language-learning opportunities during early childhood represents a modifiable developmental and social determinant of later educational and health outcomes. There are inequities in these time-sensitive interactions—specifically language-learning opportunities—across families in the population, which are social determinants of early literacy, achievement in school, and later-life education, health, and economic and social well-being across the life span. This gap is most pronounced among children who grow up in poverty in the United States and internationally. The healthcare system in the United States effectively reaches to nearly all infants; however, language-learning opportunities are not a focus during well-child visits. The term “Language Nutrition” (LN) was coined in prior research to refer to these developmentally rich interactions known to support brain and language growth in children younger than preschool age. We developed Kansas City Brain Builders (KCBB) to address this inequity by promoting LN broadly among families and children in a community so that all children have a more equitable home language environment. The purpose of this study is to report longitudinal empirical findings on families and children related to the implementation of KCBB, a public health approach to community change, over 2 years. Methods The evaluation involved two parallel longitudinal studies: the Community study and the Family study. The Community study assessed the implementation of a KCBB multisectoral community partnership to promote LN-friendly changes in local programs, practices, and policies. The Family study involved longitudinal assessments of a sample of 83 English- and Spanish-speaking families with children younger than 36 months of age, evaluating the KCBB impacts on parental behaviors and child growth in language skills. Results KCBB led to a high level of documented program implementation and substantial LN promotion throughout the community. Repeated parent assessments indicated that participants had received LN messages from multiple community sectors over time, increased their knowledge of the importance of LN, and used LN through storybook reading, verbal responsiveness, and teaching behaviors during interactions with their children. Growth in children’s early language skills was significantly associated with the amount of LN they received. Discussion/Conclusion KCBB is one of the few multisectoral interventions designed to promote community-wide change targeting LN. It is a manualized intervention that can be replicated by other communities. This study employed three levels of measurement such that change could be evaluated in a theoretical framework of influence from community engagement to parental behavior and growth in child language skills. Findings provide preliminary evidence that a multisectoral community approach can achieve broad reach and is associated with changes in caregiver practices and child language growth. Larger, controlled, and replicated studies are needed to establish causal effects and determine whether such approaches reduce disparities in language-learning opportunities.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, healthcare providers face significant challenges in meeting the niche health needs of refugees. Social determinants of health, including limited health literacy and finances, complicate refugees' access to treatment for conditions, such as chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Understanding the strategies utilised by a specialised general practice for refugees can offer guidance for treating this population. The aim of this study was to explore how primary care is currently managing CHB care tailored to refugees and to identify areas for potential improvements. METHODS: Between August and December 2024, we conducted 15 semi-structured interviews with nine general practitioners, four nurses, one pharmacist and one infectious disease specialist. We used a convenience sample and snowballing; most participants worked at a refugee-focused general practice in the west of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. All interviews were recorded and transcribed; data were analysed descriptively. RESULTS: Primary healthcare providers in our study recognised the challenges of treating refugees with CHB, including low health literacy, and the cost of providing and seeking care. However, when compared with hospital services, the benefits of primary care include community integration and location, rapport development, and the availability of interpreter services. Subsidising primary care provider training and other costs were recommended. CONCLUSIONS: Primary care may be better positioned than hospital services to treat refugees with CHB. These findings support funding and improving CHB management in primary care to meet the needs of refugees, which will lead to better health outcomes for this disadvantaged population.

Beyond digital health: public and community digital interventions for migrant psychosocial well-being in Spain and Argentina

Anabel Melguizo-Garín; Gisele Kleidermacher; Cecilia Eleonora Melella Frontiers in Human Dynamics, 2026, Vol. 8 https://doi.org/10.3389/fhumd.2026.1952272

Introduction The rapid digitalization of services for migrant populations has transformed the ways in which information, guidance, and social support are delivered. However, existing research has primarily focused on clinical digital mental health interventions or on migrants' own uses of digital technologies, paying considerably less attention to digital devices developed by public institutions and community organizations. This study comparatively analyzes four digital intervention devices implemented in Spain and Argentina, two public and two community-based, to examine how they may contribute to psychosocial well-being from a social determinants of health perspective. Methods and Results Using a qualitative design based on digital ethnography and comparative thematic content analysis, the study explores the characteristics, functions, and intervention strategies of these digital resources, with particular attention to their roles in information provision, guidance, psychosocial support, and community participation. The findings show that these digital resources function as hybrid intervention ecosystems that integrate technological tools, professional support, and community networks rather than merely providing information. Four predominant intervention models were identified: administrative-information, institutional guidance and service access, rights-based community, and community guidance, accompaniment, and referral. Discussion Together, these models offer a novel analytical framework for understanding the diverse roles of digital interventions in migration contexts. Rather than providing direct therapeutic care, these devices contribute to psychosocial well-being by reducing barriers to access, strengthening social support networks, promoting rights, and facilitating connections with specialized services. By shifting the focus from clinical digital health to digital social intervention ecosystems, this study expands current debates on digital interventions for migrant populations and provides practical implications for the development of more inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive digital resources aimed at promoting psychosocial well-being.

Foundations for success: maximising impact by supporting protective factors for early communication development

Katelyn Melvin; Helén Smith; Kym Dunstan; Karly Green; Bridget Debattista Journal of Clinical Practice in Speech-Language Pathology, 2026, pp. 1-10 https://doi.org/10.1080/22000259.2026.2731059

This paper presents a model to guide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to effectively respond to social determinants of health and protective factors that shape early communication development for Australian children. Aligned with contemporary early years policy frameworks, we discuss the SLP’s role in strategically strengthening the protective factors that enable language development across three ecological levels: child and family, community, and systems and society. By embracing this scope of practice, SLPs move beyond traditional service boundaries to partner with families, mobilise community resources, and advocate for systemic change that addresses health inequities. Developed with input from practicing SLPs working across diverse contexts, this work demonstrates both the necessity and feasibility of place-based innovation in speech-language pathology. It serves as a practical resource and catalyst for ongoing professional dialogue, inviting SLPs to consider how they can create meaningful, equitable impact on early communication development by addressing the social determinants that matter most.
