Does Professional Development Predict Teacher Self-Efficacy? Implications for School Psychologists

Nicholas Hafner; Hao-Jan Luh; Ronan Bernas; Assege HaileMariam Journal of Applied School Psychology, 2026, pp. 1-16 https://doi.org/10.1080/15377903.2026.2734987

Teacher self-efficacy influences instructional quality, classroom management, and student outcomes, and has direct implications for school psychologists who design and deliver teacher support systems. This study examined whether hours of professional development (PD) in classroom and behavior management and years of teaching experience predict overall teacher self-efficacy and its three domains: student engagement, instructional strategies, and classroom management. Participants were 194 K–12 teachers from urban, suburban, and rural districts in the Midwest, United States of America. Self-efficacy was measured using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that PD hours did not significantly predict any self-efficacy domain whereas years of teaching experience predicted overall self-efficacy, as well as instructional strategies and classroom management efficacy. These findings suggest that the quantity of PD alone may not be sufficient to strengthen efficacy beliefs. For school psychologists, the results highlight the importance of designing PD that is ongoing, collaborative, and targeted to specific skill areas. Recommendations for tailoring PD to different career stages and for integrating self-efficacy support into teacher retention strategies are discussed.

Commentary on two classroom observation systems: Moving toward a shared understanding of effective teaching.

Carol McDonald Connor School Psychology Quarterly, 2013, Vol. 28, Issue 4, pp. 342-346 https://doi.org/10.1037/spq0000045

In this commentary, I make five points: that designing observation systems that actually predict students' outcomes is challenging; second that systems that capture the complex and dynamic nature of the classroom learning environment are more likely to be able to meet this challenge; three, that observation tools are most useful when developed to serve a particular purpose and are put to that purpose; four that technology can help; and five, there are policy implications for valid and reliable classroom observation tools. The two observation systems presented in this special issue represent an important step forward and a move toward policy that promises to make a true difference in what is defined as high quality and effective teaching, what it looks like in the classroom, and how these practices can be more widely disseminated so that all children, including those attending under-resourced schools, can experience effective instruction, academic success and the lifelong accomplishment that follows.
