Reward Prediction-Error Fidelity: a testable hypothesis linking reinforcement learning mechanisms to applied behavior analysis for autism and neurodevelopmental conditions

Sebastian G. D. Cesarano Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2026, Vol. 20, pp. 1974577 https://doi.org/10.3389/fnbeh.2026.1974577

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has developed an effective technology of reinforcement delivery, including Discrete Trial Training, Natural Environment Teaching, and token economies, largely on functional-behavioral grounds. Computational neuroscience has independently produced formal accounts of reinforcement learning centered on prediction errors and credit assignment. I propose a testable hypothesis connecting the two: the effectiveness of a reinforcement procedure depends on the quality of the learning signal that its delivery produces on each occasion, a property I term Reward Prediction-Error Fidelity (RPE Fidelity). The property is decomposed into four dimensions, temporal credit, contingency, prediction, and outcome value, each corresponding to a construct long studied in behavior analysis. Formalized within an actor-critic model with eligibility traces, the four dimensions enter the learning update multiplicatively, which implies that they cannot compensate for one another and that the effect of each depends on the others and on the learner’s history. The combination rule distinguishes the hypothesis from the separate behavioral constructs it draws on, and its dependence on learning history distinguishes it from steady-state quantitative models of reinforcement. I situate the hypothesis within an integrative framework, discuss its application to autistic learners, including differences in reward processing and volatility estimation and the role of learner assent, and compare it with procedural fidelity, quantitative behavioral theory, and alternative learning models, including attentional, timescale-invariant, successor-representation, and Bayesian accounts. I derive nine predictions, specifying for each the result that would favor the hypothesis and the result that would favor its strongest competitor, and outline a staged research programme compatible with single-case experimental designs.

The personalized psychological intervention optimization system of transformer temporal modeling and deep reinforcement learning collaboration

Zongxiang Zhai Discover Artificial Intelligence, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44163-026-02382-x

Long-term digital psychological intervention faces issues such as delayed state feedback, observation absence, and scattered individual responses. Static input is difficult to retain cross-period dependencies, and a unified strategy will also widen user differences and cause fluctuations in continuous actions. To address these problems, a personalized intervention system that combines Transformer temporal modeling and proximal policy optimization is constructed. Structured psychological state representation organizes continuous behaviors and subjective feedback into an updateable sequence. The Transformer encoder extracts long-term dependencies and local mutations, the individual embedding absorbs user response deviations, and the Kullback–Leibler (KL) constraint inhibits adjacent strategy jumps. The experiment uses StudentLife data and accompanying simulations, semi-synthetic data. The cumulative reward of the complete model reaches 634.7 ± 21.8, with a 95% confidence interval of 619.11–650.29. The rule strategy, Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) immediate state model, and the configuration without individual embedding are 412.6 ± 38.4, 528.3 ± 42.7, and 561.9 ± 35.2, respectively. The differences among the three groups, after Holm correction, all reach significant levels ( p < 0.001). The complete model enters the stable range after 1620 rounds, and the variance of the reward after convergence drops to 19.4. The rate of change in emotional intensity, the improvement value of state stability, and the cumulative variance of individual rewards is 0.091, 0.052, and 28.4, respectively. The ablation results show that temporal encoding mainly affects long-term benefits and convergence stability, and individual embedding focuses on reducing the dispersion among users. The existing evidence supports strategy optimization in non-clinical environments, but does not constitute a psychological mechanism explanation, causal effect proof, or clinical effectiveness conclusion.

ARES-SI: adaptive reinforcement-enhanced sampling for suicidal ideation

Ross Jacobucci; Taylor A. Burke; Ying Cheng; Brooke A. Ammerman npj Mental Health Research, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44184-026-00251-0

Suicidal ideation (SI) fluctuates rapidly within individuals, but standard ecological momentary assessment (EMA) uses fixed schedules that miss critical risk windows. We present ARES-SI (Adaptive Reinforcement-Enhanced Sampling for Suicidal Ideation), a reinforcement learning system that personalizes EMA timing to individual risk patterns. ARES-SI combines random forest models to predict active SI probability and non-response likelihood with a Q-learning algorithm to determine optimal assessment intervals (30 min for high-risk states, 3 h for low-risk states, and next day to reduce burden). We trained the system using EMA data from 98 participants across three studies with varied sampling frequencies (4–15 assessments per day; 2359 positive active SI responses) over 28-day protocols. In validation testing ( N = 34; 374 positive active SI responses), the random forest models achieved an AUC of 0.865 for active SI and 0.750 for non-response. ARES-SI demonstrated 65% higher action selection accuracy than random scheduling (0.781 vs. 0.474; macro F1 = 0.650 vs. 0.377), with stronger detection of high-risk windows (30-min recall = 0.810 vs. 0.392) and efficient low-risk scheduling (3-h precision = 0.972 vs. 0.876). These findings provide initial evidence that reinforcement learning can adapt assessment timing to momentary risk.

Rethinking content delivery for learning reinforcement: a reflective account of podcast summaries and Universal Design for Learning in Pharmacy Education

Kingston Rajiah Currents in Pharmacy Teaching and Learning, 2026, Vol. 19, Issue 1, pp. 102814 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cptl.2026.102814

PURPOSE: Maintaining student engagement with lecture content beyond the classroom remains a persistent challenge in higher education. While lecture recordings are widely used, they often require substantial time to revisit and may not align with students' study habits. This reflective article examines the introduction of concise AI-assisted podcast summaries as a supplementary learning resource within a second-year module in the MPharm programme. The purpose of this reflection is to explore how this intervention influenced student engagement with lecture material and how the experience reshaped my assumptions about how students revisit and consolidate learning. DESCRIPTION: Podcast summaries of approximately ten minutes were created to capture key concepts from lectures and were made available through the university's learning platform with captions and transcripts to support accessibility. The summaries were reviewed and edited to ensure pedagogical alignment with the lecture content. Student engagement was explored through learning platform analytics and open-ended survey responses, alongside informal peer feedback. The intervention emerged from ongoing reflections on students' difficulties revisiting full lecture recordings and their expressed preference for shorter revision resources. ANALYSIS: Student feedback and usage patterns indicated that the podcasts were primarily used after lectures as tools for reinforcement rather than preparation. Many students integrated listening into daily activities such as commuting or exercising, indicating the flexible nature of podcast-based learning. Reflecting on this experience challenged my assumption that students primarily require preparatory materials and instead highlighted the importance of supporting post-lecture consolidation. The intervention also raised considerations about balancing concise summaries with the need to maintain depth in complex public health topics. CONCLUSIONS: The experience suggests that podcast summaries can provide a flexible means for students to revisit complex material while complementing existing teaching approaches. More broadly, the project illustrates how reflective engagement with teaching practice can reveal mismatches between educator expectations and students' learning behaviours.

Toward brain-trained humanoid robots

Maël Donoso Frontiers in Neurorobotics, 2026, Vol. 20 https://doi.org/10.3389/fnbot.2026.1903423

A growing corpus of experimental research demonstrates that neuroimaging data can be leveraged to improve the performance of artificial intelligence models, including reinforcement learning models in robotics. However, most existing studies have focused on vision, audition, language, or reward and error signals recorded while the human brain acts as an observer. In this paper, we argue that humanoid robots, although not equivalent to humans, could offer a unique opportunity to use the neural signals associated with touch, or other embodiment-dependent neural signals. As a result, humanoid robots could significantly expand the range of brain regions and functional networks that could be targeted for brain-trained artificial intelligence, and open new horizons in terms of alignment and reasoning. We discuss the improvements that neuroimaging data could potentially unlock in the context of sensorimotor tasks, spatial navigation, sensorimotor integration, embodied alignment, embodied reasoning, and social integration, as well as the broader challenges and opportunities related to brain-trained humanoid robots.

Long-term engagement-oriented short video recommendation via deep reinforcement learning

Juan Di Discover Artificial Intelligence, 2026, Vol. 6, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44163-026-02098-y

Short video platforms require recommendation models that can adapt to rapidly changing user interests while optimizing engagement beyond immediate click feedback. Existing collaborative filtering and supervised deep learning methods are effective for static preference matching and short-term click-through-rate prediction, but they are less suited to sequential recommendation scenarios where each recommended item influences subsequent user behavior. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for short video recommendation. The recommendation process is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), in which the user state is constructed from historical interactions and multimodal item features, the action corresponds to selecting candidate videos, and the reward integrates immediate feedback with delayed engagement signals. A Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based agent is trained in an offline simulation environment based on the KuaiRec short-video dataset and is compared with representative baselines, including popularity-based recommendation, matrix factorization, and supervised DNN models. The experimental results show that the DRL agent better balances click relevance, session duration, and recommendation diversity, particularly in long-term engagement-oriented metrics. Ablation results further confirm that combining immediate and delayed reward signals is important for learning a robust recommendation policy. This study provides a practical framework for developing intelligent short video recommendation systems that shift the optimization objective from short-term response maximization toward long-term user value.

Intelligent vulnerability assessment system for college students mental health based on few-sample reinforcement learning approach

Xiaobo Huang; Jiayue Ji; Shi Cheng Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyt.2026.1932839

Introduction College students’ psychological vulnerability assessment is constrained by data scarcity, high labeling cost, privacy sensitivity, and small, imbalanced samples, and existing frameworks typically treat vulnerability as a static judgment that cannot track how a student’s condition changes over time. This study examined whether a few-sample hierarchical grading model combined with meta-reinforcement-learning-based sequential decision-making could address both problems jointly. Methods A few-sample hierarchical grading model, combining meta-learning and transfer regularization with a prototype-based embedding and ordinal threshold assignment, quantified static risk from a handful of labeled examples per grade, while a sequential risk-identification method formulated dynamic assessment as a Markov decision process solved by a two-stage meta-reinforcement-learning policy. Case studies used a longitudinal, class-imbalanced cohort simulation calibrated to the documented statistics of a mobile-sensing mental-health study (no real participant data were used) and compared the proposed models against threshold-rule, supervised, fine-tuned, few-shot, and non-meta reinforcement-learning baselines, with sensitivity analyses on support-set size, reward weights, discount factor, and regularization weight, plus a regime-switching robustness check. Results The proposed grading model attained a macro-F1 of 0.847 with ten labeled examples per grade, over twenty percentage points above a conventional deep-learning classifier, though its edge over other episodic few-shot architectures was small and inconsistent, indicating episodic meta-learning as the main source of this gain. The meta-reinforcement-learning policy achieved a higher alert precision-recall area (0.514 vs. 0.380) than a non-meta baseline and avoided its degenerate always-escalate behavior, but neither the main study nor the regime-switching check showed the composite reward lengthening lead time versus a simpler accuracy-only reward, which matched its lead time at a much lower escalation rate. Sensitivity analyses showed the reward-weight ratio and discount factor shaping the early-identification versus intervention-cost trade-off. Conclusion These findings suggest that combining few-sample meta-learning with metareinforcement-learning-based sequential decision-making can improve vulnerability assessment under scarce, evolving data relative to conventional static and non-meta-adapted approaches, with an accuracy-only reward recommended as the practical default. The case studies relied on a calibrated simulation rather than raw longitudinal records, so prospective validation on real campus data under appropriate privacy safeguards is needed before responsible deployment.
