A major challenge for quantum workforce development is the need to both understand and reliably assess student learning of quantum information science (QIS) fundamentals. Yet student thinking is notoriously difficult to probe, even for seasoned education researchers. This article presents the story of Item 15 on the Quantum Computing Conceptual Survey (QCCS). This assessment item underwent more revision and discussion within the team than the remaining 19 assessment questions combined. This paper provides a behind-the-scenes look at the development of this assessment question: a story that both reveals interesting findings about student reasoning in quantum computing and illustrates why quantum education researchers insist on triangulating diverse quantitative and qualitative data sources when developing and refining assessment items, with implications for any researcher looking to understand and measure student conceptual reasoning in quantum computing, as well as for QIS curriculum and workforce development more broadly.

Emotional appraisal in gameful work design: a conceptual framework for divergent employee reactions

Kaiyuan Zhao; Xiongying Niu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1906302

Gameful work design is increasingly used to make tasks, feedback, performance systems, and workplace interaction more engaging, yet its consequences remain double-edged. Existing research has largely explained these differences in terms of motivation, technology acceptance, or performance outcomes, offering limited insight into why similar features are interpreted differently across employees and contexts. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory and a bounded integrative evidence base of 52 publications, this conceptual analysis develops an emotional appraisal framework of gameful work design. The framework analytically distinguishes five interrelated appraisal domains—system characteristics, task design, self-evaluation and identity, social interaction, and organizational meaning—and explains how external design cues acquire supportive or threatening meanings through appraisal. These meanings shape emotional reactions, which may subsequently influence individual, team, and organizational outcomes. Eight propositions translate the framework into domain-focused, cross-pathway, multilevel, and temporal relationships for future testing. By clarifying what employees appraise and how appraisal processes link similar gameful features to divergent consequences, the framework extends cognitive-emotional explanations of work gamification. It provides a focused agenda for future research.

Logical-mathematical reasoning is essential for interpreting representations, applying procedures, justifying relationships, and solving problems; however, evidence regarding students’ performance in Ecuadorian school contexts remains limited. The aim of this study was to characterize students’ diagnostic performance in logical-mathematical reasoning and to examine differences in its distribution across the participating educational institutions. A descriptive, exploratory, non-experimental study with a quantitative approach was conducted. A total of 843 third-year upper secondary school students, aged 15 to 17 years, from 21 educational institutions in Chone Canton, Ecuador, participated in the study. Logical-mathematical reasoning was assessed using a five-task diagnostic test, with each task scored from 0 to 4 points and aggregated into an overall score ranging from 0 to 20 points. Of the participants, 76.39% were classified at the low level, 17.08% at the regular level, 5.93% at the good level, and 0.59% at the very good level; no student reached the excellent level. Statistically significant differences were identified among institutions, χ²(60) = 392.62, p_MC = 0.00001, Cramer’s V = 0.394; H(20) = 208.51, p < 0.001, ε² = 0.229. The study provides a multi-institutional baseline of logical-mathematical reasoning in a relatively understudied Ecuadorian context. The findings may support the identification of educational needs and the planning of differentiated support according to students’ initial performance. Because no comparison group or quantitative pretest–posttest measurement was available, it was not possible to evaluate changes in logical-mathematical reasoning or attribute the results to the use of GeoGebra.

Differential predictions of mindsets for task effort cost and emotional cost perceptions in introductory college chemistry.

Hyun Ji Lee; Patrick N. Beymer; Elise C. Allen Journal of Educational Psychology, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1037/edu0001057

Understanding students' cost perceptions in introductory science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses and what precedes them is critical in preventing the considerable loss of talent in STEM.In this study, we examined the extent to which students' fixed mindset at the beginning of a semester predicts their weekly task effort and emotional cost perceptions. We also examined indirect associations of a fixed mindset with weekly perceived learning, STEM career intentions at the end of the semester, and final achievement, via weekly cost perceptions.Participants were 694 college students in introductory chemistry at a large midwestern university in the United States.Using multilevel structural equation modeling, we found that students with a greater endorsement of a fixed mindset tended to perceive higher task effort cost.Furthermore, students' fixed mindset indirectly predicted lower perceived learning, STEM career intentions, and achievement via higher perceived task effort cost.Fixed mindset did not significantly predict emotional cost perceptions. This study offers both theoretical insights and practical implications by demonstrating the differential predictions of mindsets across cost dimensions and identifying mindsets as a precursor of task effort cost. Educational Impact and Implications StatementCost is a key motivational factor contributing to college student attrition from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors. This study shows that college students' beliefs in the innateness and fixedness of intelligence (i.e., fixed mindset) predicted their higher effort cost perceptions in an introductory chemistry course over a semester, which in turn was linked to lower perceived learning, STEM career intentions, and achievement. These findings underscore the potential of lowering a fixed mindset in STEM college students to enhance student learning and achievement by mitigating their perceptions of effort cost.Such efforts should also promote retention in STEM fields.

Designing a human-in-the-loop AI iterative process for research writing: a framework for preserving productive struggle

Sarah A. Chauncey Frontiers in Computer Science, 2026, Vol. 8 https://doi.org/10.3389/fcomp.2026.1947835

This Hypothesis and Theory paper addresses a design problem at the center of AI-assisted research writing: which cognitive demands should AI reduce, and which must remain the writer’s own work. Generative AI can absorb the effort of drafting, organizing, and synthesizing prose, but that same effort is where understanding takes shape. Recent empirical work documents reduced neural engagement, weaker recall of one’s own writing, and a diminished sense of authorship among writers who rely heavily on AI assistance. The paper grounds this problem in cognitive load theory, which distinguishes intrinsic load (the element interactivity a task inherently requires) from extraneous load (demands that do not contribute to learning), and which treats germane processes as the working memory resources a writer allocates to intrinsic load. It draws on productive struggle and generative processing to explain why germane processing cannot be offloaded: when a tool performs the work, the processing does not transfer to the writer; it does not occur. Two research questions are posed. First, which cognitive demands in research writing constitute extraneous load that AI could reduce, and which require germane processing that must remain the writer’s own. Second, how can human-in-the-loop AI collaboration be designed across the phases of research writing so that this distinction is operationalized through human judgment? The contribution is a nine-phase conceptual framework mapped to the sections of a research paper, from curiosity and inquiry through references and submission. Each phase specifies the dominant cognitive demand, the AI role (ranging from minimal involvement to full collaboration), and design guidelines for tools and interactions. The framework addresses research writing from secondary school (grades 9–12) through postdoctoral and professional research, across disciplines. It treats phase-aware AI use as responsive pedagogy applied to research writing: instruction and tool design that respond to the cognitive demands of the task rather than to the tool’s capabilities. The paper draws implications for the design of responsive digital education, including tool selection, assessment, equity, and support for writers with cognitive differences. The framework is intended to preserve the cognitive work that makes research meaningful.

Bringing Everyone to the Table: An Experimental Study of LLM-Facilitated Group Decision Making

Mohammed Alsobay; David M. Rothschild; Jake M. Hofman; Daniel G. Goldstein Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-36 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816907

Group decision-making often suffers from uneven information sharing, hindering decision quality. While large language models (LLMs) have been widely studied as aids for individuals, their potential to support groups of users, potentially as facilitators, is relatively underexplored. We present a pre-registered randomized experiment with 1,475 participants assigned to 281 live groups completing a hidden profile task—selecting an optimal city for a hypothetical sporting event—under one of four facilitation conditions: no facilitation, a one-time message prompting information sharing, a human facilitator, or an LLM (GPT-4o) facilitator. We find that LLM facilitation increased information shared within a discussion by raising the minimum level of engagement with the task among group members, and that these gains came at limited cost in terms of participants’ attitudes towards the task, their group, or their facilitator. Whether by human or AI, there was no significant effect of facilitation on the final decision outcome, suggesting that even substantial but partial increases in information sharing were insufficient to overcome the hidden profile effect studied. To support the design and evaluation of LLM-mediated group decision-making systems, we release our data and our experimental platform, the Group-AI Interaction Laboratory (GRAIL), as an open-source tool.
