A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WRITING SKILLS IN INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED BOYS VERSUS GIRLS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL RAIPUR, CHHATTISGARH

Sadhana Nayak Journal of Integrative Science and Societal Impact, 2026, Vol. 2, Issue 3, pp. 16-19 https://doi.org/10.29121/jissi.v2.i3.2026.109

This research study was conducted to provide a comparative analysis of the writing skills of intellectually disabled boys and girls studying at the secondary level. The primary objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that "intellectually disabled boys at the secondary level will exhibit higher writing skills compared to intellectually disabled girls." A total of 60 intellectually disabled students (30 boys and 30 girls, aged 12–18 years) were selected from special and inclusive schools in the Raipur district (Chhattisgarh) using purposive random sampling. Data were collected using a standardized 'Writing Skill Assessment Scale' (WSAS), which evaluated fine motor skills, shape imitation, clarity of letters/words, and copying speed. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the mean, standard deviation (SD), and t-test. The results indicated no statistically significant difference between the scores of boys (M=54.20, SD=8.15) and girls (M=52.80, SD=8.40) (t=0.65, p=.518). Consequently, the formulated hypothesis is rejected. The study concludes that, in the context of intellectual disability, the development of writing skills is not gender-dependent but rather relies on individual motor coordination and regular practice.

An integrated stress-adaptation framework for understanding mental health in developmental coordination disorder and comorbid neurodevelopmental conditions (ISAF-DCD)

Nadja Schott Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1965095 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1965095

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is associated with elevated rates of anxiety and depression, as well as reduced quality of life, yet the mechanisms linking motor difficulties to these outcomes remain incompletely specified. This article presents and critically evaluates the Integrated Stress-Adaptation Framework for DCD (ISAF-DCD), which synthesizes empirical findings on DCD with established stress theories, including the Environmental Stress Hypothesis, the transactional model of stress, and the Conservation of Resources model. Although the framework is presented with reference to comorbid neurodevelopmental conditions broadly, its evidential basis and worked examples concentrate specifically on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD); generalization to other neurodevelopmental conditions is plausible but has not been evaluated here. ISAF-DCD proposes that motor coordination difficulties influence mental, cognitive, and physical health through interacting environmental demands, primary and secondary stressors, appraisal and response processes, and personal and social factors. The framework is bidirectional and developmentally sensitive, allowing outcomes to feed back into subsequent stress and adaptation processes across the lifespan. I examine the model’s conceptual coherence, empirical support, and potential clinical utility, arguing that ISAF-DCD offers a theoretically grounded heuristic for organizing a fragmented literature while remaining provisional. Its proposed contributions include clarifying the multiple roles of resilience and social support, refining the classification of environmental demands, incorporating neurodevelopmental comorbidity as a cross-cutting factor, and representing reciprocal relationships between stress and motor functioning. To improve falsifiability, I specify the temporal and functional roles of key dual-role constructs and derive five core, empirically distinguishable propositions that differentiate ISAF-DCD from an expanded Environmental Stress Hypothesis. Direct empirical support for some components, particularly the proposed corticolimbic mechanisms, remains limited. ISAF-DCD should therefore be treated as a hypothesis-generating framework, focused primarily on ADHD and ASD as comorbid conditions and on mental health as its central but not exclusive outcome domain, that requires rigorous longitudinal and intervention-based evaluation.

Minor Physical Anomalies and Neurological Soft Signs Mark Poor Insight in Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder

Beyza Zeynep Seçkin; Muhammed Emin Boylu; İsmet Kırpınar Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience, 2026, pp. 1-00 https://doi.org/10.9758/cpn.26.1478

Objective: Poor insight in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been proposed to reflect a more neurodevelopmentally rooted subtype. We examined whether minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and neurological soft signs (NSS), two peripheral markers of aberrant neurodevelopment, distinguish OCD patients according to insight. Methods: Sixty-seven adults with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition OCD were assessed with the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS), the Schedule for the Assessment of Insight, the Waldrop MPA scale and the Neurological Evaluation Scale.Patients were classified as having good (BABS ≤ 12; n = 37) or poor (BABS ≥ 13; n = 30) insight.Firth penalized logistic regression identified independent predictors. Results: The groups were comparable in age, sex, marital status, employment and comorbidity, whereas poor insight was associated with lower education, past suicidal behaviour and greater symptom severity.Total, craniofacial and peripheral MPA scores were higher in the poor-insight group, with an excess of ocular, auricular and oral anomalies.Low-set ears, epicanthus and high-arched palate were the most discriminating.Total NSS and all subdomains except complex motor sequencing were approximately doubled, with large effects for sensory integration and motor coordination.MPA burden predicted poor insight independently of symptom severity, while NSS was the dominant predictor when severity was excluded (apparent area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.97; optimism-corrected 0.95).Conclusion: These convergent findings suggest a neurodevelopmental pattern in poor-insight OCD.Given the cross-sectional design, modest sample and absence of a control group, they should be regarded as hypothesis-generating.

Rhythm-centred music interventions for motor coordination and rehabilitation: a scoping review of mechanisms, design principles, and technology-assisted assessment

Yongfan Song; Yaming Wei Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, 2026, Vol. 58, pp. jrm46015 https://doi.org/10.2340/jrm.v58.46015

OBJECTIVE: To map the evidence on rhythm-centred music interventions and movement-directed music-based strategies for motor coordination and rehabilitation, and to summarize their mechanisms, design principles, and technology-assisted assessment approaches. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and was reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched for English-language empirical studies published from January 2013 to December 2024. Studies were eligible if music or rhythmically structured auditory input was used as a movement-directed intervention and at least one motor, coordination, functional, or movement-quality outcome was reported. RESULTS: Sixty-three studies were included. Coordination-related tasks were the most common targets, while lower-limb/gait function and fine-motor skills formed the largest movement categories. Rhythm was the most frequently used musical element, whereas melody, pitch, motivational music, active music making, and interactive digital systems served more context-dependent functions. Technology-assisted assessment, including sensors, motion capture, gait-analysis platforms, and music-interactive software, was the most common measurement approach. CONCLUSION: Rhythm-centred and music-based motor interventions are heterogeneous and should be interpreted as descriptive evidence patterns rather than definitive estimates of therapeutic efficacy. Future studies should improve terminology, intervention parameterization, population-specific interpretation, methodological transparency, and multimodal mechanistic validation.
