Irja Rzepka; Ivo Dönnhoff; David Kindermann; Hans‐Christoph Friederich; Christoph Nikendei; Estella Alejandra Tambini Stollwerck Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00127-026-03244-8

Abstract Purpose Forced migration increases vulnerability to exploitation. Globally, around 50 million people are affected by human trafficking, which often involves trauma with negative mental health effects. Forced migrants already face elevated risks of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, yet the specific association of trafficking on their mental health remains unclear. Methods Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and overall stress were assessed using standardized screening instruments (PC-PTSD-5, PHQ-4, and the Distress Thermometer). Experiences of human trafficking were measured with a modified version of the Adult Human Trafficking Screening Tool (AHTST) among forced migrants in Germany. Missing data were handled using multiple imputation. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between human trafficking and positive screenings for the respective mental health conditions. Results A total of N = 1108 forced migrants participated in the study. Depending on the imputation model, between 49% and 56% of all participants screened positive for PTSD, 60% to 71% for depression, and 41% to 52% for an anxiety disorder. Among participants who screened positive for these mental health conditions, a positive screen for human trafficking was associated with a 30–40% higher probability of screening positive for PTSD and a 15% to 20% higher probability of screening positive for depression or anxiety disorder. Conclusions Forced migrants with a history of human trafficking are at elevated risk for PTSD, depression, and anxiety than those without, underscoring the need for early identification and tailored psychosocial support.

Children in Forced Migration in UN IMRF Reports: A CRC-Framed Content Analysis of Early Childhood Education and Care

Michelle A. Bell; Adrijana Višnjić Jevtić; Alexandra Tsalikis; Asia Foster; Grace Yaxin Xing; Indy Jones; … Journal of Early Childhood Education Research, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 3, pp. 369-402 https://doi.org/10.58955/jecer.163341

This study examines how frequently and within what context United Nations member states address children in forced migration in their submissions to the 2022 International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), with a focus on young children and early childhood education and care programs. Despite the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) of 2018 emphasizing child-sensitive approaches, comprehensive national documentation is sparse. Using qualitative content analysis, this study examines 42 IMRF reports submitted prior to the 2022 forum. The study reveals how member states address children in migration within the reports, with common GCM themes frequently mentioned including: data and information collection, legal and identity considerations, service and program availability, and governance and cooperation efforts. However, a key finding highlights the near-complete absence of direct reference to Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), with only two countries (Morocco and Turkmenistan) explicitly mentioning early childhood programs. Furthermore, considering the lack of evidence pertaining specifically to young children, recommendations include integrated ECEC services with efforts toward maintaining psychological support within migration policies impacting young children, and enhanced assessment methodologies, consistent reporting, and services prioritizing children's voices in decision-making, rights, and well-being. This study contributes to the discourse on young children in forced migration and ECEC to offer a foundation for future international collaboration and policy development efforts.

Unlocking the power of education: understanding the value and challenges of education for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children

Haya Fakoush; Blerina Këllezi; Kay Bridger; Sara Bdeir Globalisation Societies and Education, 2026, pp. 1-21 https://doi.org/10.1080/14767724.2026.2741142

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) face significant challenges shaped by forced migration, trauma, legal uncertainty, and systemic barriers in host countries. While education is widely recognised as important for integration, less is known about how educational experiences contribute to UASC wellbeing, safety, belonging, and future opportunities. Drawing on Kohli (2011), the Social Identity Approach to Health (Haslam, Jetten, Postmes, and Haslam 2009; Kёllezi, and Reicher 2012; Herman 1992) trauma recovery theory and human rights framework (UNCRC 1989), this multi-perspective qualitative study explores the role of education in supporting the wellbeing, integration, and success of UASC. The study analysed qualitative interviews with 13 UASC care leavers, 10 foster carers, and 16 education professionals. The analysis identifies four key themes: safety and trust, social connections and belonging, success and resilience and equitable access. The findings highlight that educational establishments can help young people reconstruct ordinary life, and develop psychological stability, social connection, and future opportunities. Simultaneously, exclusionary practices, legal ambiguity, and structural barriers can undermine these processes. The study advances understanding of education as social and institutional contributor to wellbeing, and argues for trauma-informed right-based and inclusive educational practices that support UASC wellbeing and long-term social inclusion.

Beyond the Seat at the Table: Structural Justice, Academic Agency, and the Reality of "Africa Rising"

Michał Apollo; Thomas W Pogge Journal of Academics Stand Against Poverty, 2026, pp. i-xii https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23085477

Africa is central to the world's future. The continent holds immense human potential, vast natural wealth, and a very young population. Yet, historical trauma from colonialism and ongoing neocolonial practices still hold African nations back. Unfair global financial rules, high borrowing costs, and severe climate impacts create deep systemic barriers. Africa contributes barely 4% of global carbon emissions, yet suffers massive economic losses from climate change. The concept of "Africa Rising" must move beyond simple economic metrics. It requires structural justice, genuine self-directed development, and local academic agency. This special issue grounds these global debates in concrete African realities through eight insightful studies. Their authors offer practical solutions to pressing challenges: curbing conflict through trade and gender inclusion, combining indigenous justice rituals with state law, fighting carbon market fraud, and introducing novel economic models to combat financial exclusion. Other studies advocate for youth civic agency through non-formal education, pharmaceutical sovereignty to lower medicine prices, and reframing forced migration as a driver of regional integration through the African Union's Free Movement Protocol. Recent global governance reforms, such as the African Union joining the G20, now G21, offer a vital platform for procedural justice. However, a seat at the table is not enough on its own. Africa must activate its internal institutions, financial markets, and academic community. As demonstrated by the authors in this collection, local experts provide the essential evidence needed to drive real progress. Only through genuine partnership, ethical global frameworks, and grounded African agency can the continent realise its true development potential.
