Creative competence, defined as the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required both to act creatively and to cultivate creativity in learners, is increasingly framed as a core professional capability for teachers, yet initial teacher education rarely addresses it systematically. This brief research report examines whether a game-based instructional module embedded in a standard pedagogy course can strengthen pre-service teachers' creative competence. Using a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent-groups pre-test/post-test design, two intact cohorts of undergraduate pre-service teachers ( N = 118) completed either a 12-week game-based module (“Creative Pedagogy Lab”; n = 61) or a conventional seminar covering the same syllabus ( n = 57). Outcomes included creative self-efficacy and creative personal identity (Short Scale of Creative Self), teaching-for-creativity competence, divergent thinking (Alternative Uses Task), and blind consensual ratings of an authentic lesson-design product; reflective journals and focus groups captured participants’ experiences. Covariate-adjusted analyses showed significant advantages for the game-based condition in creative self-efficacy ( η p² = .10), teaching-for-creativity competence ( η p² = .12), originality of ideas ( η p² = .06), and rated creativity of lesson designs (d = 0.82). No significant effect emerged for ideational fluency, and the effect on creative personal identity was small and did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. Qualitative findings offer contextual insight into these patterns rather than independent evidence of causal mechanism: participants described the games as low-stakes “safe-fail” spaces that granted permission to experiment, while time pressure and coverage anxiety constrained engagement. The results provide preliminary evidence that game-based approaches can be integrated into professional preparation without displacing core content, and they point to organizational conditions—curricular space, facilitator development, and assessment alignment—needed to sustain such approaches in teacher-education organizations. As a single-institution study with a predominantly female, elementary-track sample, these findings are preliminary and may not generalize to other subject areas, institutions, or more gender-balanced cohorts.

Are children really more creative than adults? A mixed-methods examination of creative performance and experience

It is widely believed that children are more creative than adults, yet direct empirical tests of this assumption are scarce. A qualitative pre-study indicated that creativity is commonly attributed to preschoolers and associated with intrinsically motivated engagement, informing the design of the main study. 92 preschool children and 70 adults completed a divergent thinking task and two drawing tasks varying in structure (free vs. goal-directed). Independent raters evaluated all products for novelty, effectiveness, and overall creativity; participants reported motivation, enjoyment, confidence, and anxiety. Adults outperformed children on externally rated creativity, particularly in structured tasks. In contrast, children reported higher confidence and motivation, lower anxiety, and—except in the structured drawing task—greater enjoyment. Together, these findings challenge the view that children are generally more creative than adults by showing that their apparent advantage lies in confident and intrinsically motivated engagement, whereas creative thinking performance increases with age.

It’s not who you know: sociometric position did not shape children’s innovation or imitation propensities

Introduction The capacity for cumulative culture depends on the interplay between social learning and innovation, yet the social-ecological factors that shape individual variation in these processes remain poorly understood. Children’s position within peer networks has been theorised to influence learning strategies by shaping exposure to social models and normative conformity pressures, but this prediction remains untested in experimental contexts. Methods We tested whether children’s sociometric position predicted social learning and innovation across three complementary experimental tasks. 256 children aged 7–11 completed sociometric friendship nominations within their school classrooms and three tasks: the Multi-Method Box, a puzzlebox measuring learning strategy choice and innovation-by-modification; a tool innovation task, the hook task; and the Alternate Uses divergent thinking task. We derived three peer-nomination indices — out-degree, reciprocated friendships, and in-degree — and tested their associations with task performance using multilevel models controlling for age and classroom clustering. Results Across all tasks and outcome measures, none of the sociometric indices predicted children’s learning strategy choice, imitation fidelity, innovation-by-modification, tool innovation success, solution method, or divergent thinking performance. In contrast, age consistently predicted innovation-related outcomes: older children produced more reward-exit and tool-entrance innovations on the Multi-Method Box, were more likely to solve the hook task and to use a hook rather than a dragging strategy, and generated more divergent thinking responses. These age effects replicated well-established developmental findings and held independently of children’s network position. Discussion These findings suggest that individual-level dispositions and developmental cognitive gains may carry greater explanatory weight than relational embeddedness for micro-level learning decisions in middle childhood. Network structure may regulate the flow of cultural information across populations without determining the immediate learning strategy choices of individual children in individually administered experimental contexts.

Introduction This study explores how ADHD-related neurodiversity is experienced within marketing teams, particularly in customer-oriented and boundary-spanning work. Method Using a grounded theory approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 marketing managers, frontline employees, and freelancers/consultants, including 19 participants with a formal ADHD diagnosis and 16 participants with direct professional experience working with colleagues with ADHD. Results The analysis generated three theoretical codes: Neurodiverse Cognitive Synergy, Mediated Empathy in Boundary-Spanning, and Resilient Organizational Adaptation. The findings indicate that ADHD-related characteristics, including divergent thinking, creativity, intense focus, and adaptability, may be experienced as resources. At the same time, impulsivity, distraction, stress, communication difficulties, and social isolation may create challenges. These outcomes appear to depend on task demands, role fit, interpersonal relationships, and organizational support. Contribution The study develops an exploratory, data-grounded framework that explains how organizational and relational conditions may shape how ADHD-related characteristics are engaged in customer-oriented marketing work, without assuming a direct or causal relationship between ADHD and innovation.
