چکیده

Shared cognitive–linguistic skills support reading and spelling, yet they may dissociate into heterogeneous literacy profiles. This study examined whether Chinese students learning English as a second language (ESL) with poor reading (PR), poor spelling (PS), combined word-reading and spelling difficulties (English learning difficulties; ELD), and typical development (TD) exhibited distinct literacy outcomes and cognitive–linguistic profiles, and which skills uniquely predicted subgroup membership. Participants were 190 Grade 2–3 Hong Kong Chinese students who were classified into predefined literacy profiles based on grade-normed performance on standardized English word reading and word spelling measures. Students completed assessments of vocabulary knowledge, phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, rapid naming, morphological awareness, working memory, and IQ. Multivariate analyses of covariance showed that the predefined literacy profiles were associated with overlapping but differentially expressed cognitive-linguistic patterns. Hierarchical multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that vocabulary knowledge and phonological awareness consistently differentiated all difficulty groups from TD peers. In contrast, orthographic knowledge uniquely predicted PR and ELD but not isolated PS. Rapid naming and morphological awareness did not show unique contributions. These findings are consistent with literacy difficulties reflecting shared but differentially weighted cognitive-linguistic constraints, supporting a multiple-deficit perspective and highlighting vocabulary knowledge and phonological awareness as important targets for assessment and intervention in ESL learners.

The effect of contextual richness on L2 learners’ processing and incidental acquisition of non-literal English phrasal verbs: An eye-tracking study

تأثیر غنای زمینه‌ای بر پردازش و یادگیری تصادفی افعال عبارتی غیرحرفی زبان‌آموزان زبان دوم: یک مطالعه ردیابی چشم

چکیده

Abstract Many studies have used post-tests to examine word-related factors, such as encounter frequency, that influence L2 learners’ incidental acquisition of single words. However, less is known about how context affects the processing and acquisition of multi-word units, such as non-literal English phrasal verbs (PVs), which are particularly challenging for L2 learners to master. This eye-tracking study investigated how contextual richness influences L2 learners’ processing and acquisition of non-literal English PVs. Fifty-seven Chinese-L1 postgraduate students were randomly assigned to three groups, each reading eight low-frequency PVs in contexts varying in informativeness: more informative , less informative and uninformative. Vocabulary post-tests and delayed post-tests assessed incidental learning gains. Results indicated that more informative contexts enhanced form retention, whereas less informative contexts facilitated meaning recognition. These findings contribute to cognitive theories of word learning and offer practical insights for L2 vocabulary instruction.

Teaching coherence and cohesion to Chinese EFL undergraduates: a concept-based classroom intervention

آموزش انسجام و پیوستگی به دانشجویان چینی زبان انگلیسی به عنوان زبان خارجی: یک مداخله کلاسی مبتنی بر مفهوم

Chun Wen; Xiao Lei Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1953703

چکیده

Despite the importance of coherence and cohesion to effective writing, few studies have examined how these concepts can function as a psychological tool for thinking and writing. To advance this line of inquiry, we presented a mixed-methods research that employed the Concept-based Language Instruction (C-BLI) to teach coherence and cohesion to Chinese English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners, with an aim to examine changes in learners' conceptual understandings and writing performance following the intervention. Data sources included written texts, metalinguistic knowledge tests as well as learning process data from four focal students. Quantitative pretest-posttest comparisons revealed substantial improvements in learners' conceptual understanding, whereas no statistically significant changes were observed in overall writing quality or coherence and cohesion. Qualitative analyses of the focal students’ learning data showed that the learners drew on their knowledge repertoire and metaphorical thinking to appropriate the target concepts. The focal students also demonstrated emerging changes in writing practices, including greater attention to the alignment between topic sentence and supporting evidence and logical propositional development, as well as occasional attempts to apply conceptual knowledge in revision. However, the focal students did not consistently use the target concepts to regulate their writing process. Collectively, these findings suggested a potentially interconnected, but non-synchronous, uneven relationship between conceptual knowledge growth and writing changes.
