The concept of the human person occupies a central position in philosophical anthropology because it raises fundamental questions concerning identity, individuality, relationality, community, moral responsibility, and the meaning of human existence. In Igbo philosophical thought, the person is commonly understood not as an isolated, self-sufficient entity but as one whose existence is embedded in a network of relationships involving the individual, family, community, the spiritual order, and the wider cosmos. This paper examines the concept of the human person in Igbo philosophy through the complementary ontology of Innocent I. Asouzu, particularly his philosophy of Ibuanyidanda and the method of complementary reflection. Rather than presenting Ibuanyidanda as Asouzu’s original, complete theory of philosophical anthropology, the paper develops an anthropological application of his complementary ontology to the question of personhood. It argues that Asouzu’s emphasis on the mutual dependence and non-exclusivity of realities provides resources for reconceptualizing the human person as an existence constituted through complementarity, while preserving personal identity and agency. This study therefore uses the expression “being-in-complementarity” as an interpretive formulation for articulating the anthropological implications of Asouzu’s complementary ontology, rather than assuming it without qualification as a technical equivalent of Heidegger’s being-in-the-world or Mitsein. The paper further examines whether the transcendence associated with Asouzu’s ontology should be identified straightforwardly with indigenous Igbo conceptions of Chukwu, chi, ancestors, and other spiritual realities, or understood as a philosophical reconstruction shaped partly by his Christian and Western philosophical formation. The paper thus proposes Ibuanyidanda as a promising framework for reconstructing Igbo philosophical anthropology while acknowledging the interpretive and philosophical work involved in extending Asouzu’s ontology to personhood.
Pancasila is often debated as either an ideology or a philosophical system of thought, while a gap between its values and everyday practice persists. This study aims to quantitatively synthesize the strength of the relationship between understanding and practicing Pancasila values and citizen behavior, such as tolerance and radical attitudes. It uses Koento Wibisono's dimensions of ideology (belief, myth, loyalty) and the three philosophical principles (ontology, epistemology, axiology) as its framework, with the way values are delivered treated as a moderator. The study was designed as a meta-analysis using a random-effects model and Fisher's z transformation. A search of the Garuda and Google Scholar databases for publications from 1996 to 2026 yielded twenty articles as an initial corpus. All were conceptual, normative, or qualitative, so effect sizes could not yet be pooled and the three hypotheses could not be tested statistically. A thematic synthesis shows that ideology and philosophy are understood as a unity, that Pancasila values are hierarchical, and that their practice remains suboptimal, while rote-based education leaves little lasting impression. The corpus only hints at a positive relationship between internalizing Pancasila and tolerance. This study contributes a coding scheme for future research and recommends strengthening programs that emphasize role modeling, character education, and value delivery suited to technological developments.
In 2019, Paul B. Preciado stood before three and a half thousand members of the École de la Cause Freudienneand declared: ‘I am the monster that speaks to you’. The divided reactioncrystallised a paradox: a discipline devoted to listening responded with refusal. This article takes that moment to develop two concepts in social theory: strategic certainties, the practices through which institutions transform interpretive heuristics into ontological verdicts, immunizing their frameworks against challenge; and epistemic habitus, the patterned dispositions through which such certainties are reproduced and transmitted. Lacanian institutionalisationand its pathologisation of trans experience as psychotic structure constitute a limit case of this mechanism, analytically privileged on four grounds. Trans experience challenges Lacanian sexuation at its core; the trans-psychosis association is exceptionally stable; the passage from heuristic to ontology is unusually visible; and the trans subject speaks, entering the space of classification to contest it from within. Against these closures, the article proposes radical reflexivity, the dispositionto hold one's own categories open in the encounter with what they cannot yet name. The monsters were never in those who spoke, but in the certainties that imagined them.
Community-engaged Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) is increasingly positioned as a mechanism for advancing graduate employability and social responsibility, yet the frameworks used to evaluate it remain anchored to countable proxies: employment rates, satisfaction scores, and placement completions. This provocation argues that these metrics are structurally misaligned with what WIL practitioners actually know about placement quality: knowledge that is relational, contextually rich, and routinely invisible in institutional reporting. As Generative AI enters WIL evaluation, this misalignment becomes urgent. Automating existing frameworks will not resolve their limitations, and risks further marginalising the evidence that most reliably signals whether community-engaged WIL is working. Drawing on research into practitioner agency in learning analytics, this provocation calls for evaluation frameworks that legitimise practitioner judgement, centre community partner perspectives, and deploy GenAI in service of relational knowledge rather than as a substitute for it. Effective WIL evaluation is not primarily a measurement problem, it is a question of whose evidence counts.
This Brief Report examines changes in students’ understanding of economics and “the economy” through the lens of “threshold concepts,” which serve as gateways to new ways of thinking. Drawing on qualitative analysis of postgraduate students’ reflective assignments from an MSc Ecological Economics module, we explore how a set of pedagogically pre-identified threshold concepts – selected for their centrality within ecological economics and contrast with mainstream economics – can reshape students’ understanding, and how scaffolding supports this process. The report assesses engagement with the following threshold concepts: the embedded economy (ontology); the Systems of Provision framework and heterodox views on capitalism and growth (epistemology); value pluralism and the limits of monetization (axiology); and the idea of economics as normative and political (ideology). We show that scaffolding across key dimensions of a pre-analytical vision – ontology, epistemology, axiology, and ideology – helped students develop a different understanding of economics. While focused on ecological economics, the findings suggest a pedagogical approach transferable to sustainability education more broadly: scaffolding learning around a pre-analytic vision and anchoring threshold concepts within it to foster deeper, more critical engagement with complex social-ecological knowledge.
