Toilet training is an essential developmental process that fosters discipline and independence in early childhood. The acquisition of toileting skills is significantly influenced by parenting approaches. Authoritative (democratic) parenting, characterized by warmth, two-way communication, and clear boundaries, offers supportive guidance during this developmental transition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of an authoritative parenting style on toilet training ability among children aged 3–4 years. A quantitative research design with a correlational approach was employed, involving 206 parents of children aged 3–4 years selected via questionnaire distribution. Data were collected using the adapted Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire-Short Version (PSDQ-SV) and the Toilet Training Readiness Scale (TTRS), and analyzed using binary logistic regression. The results revealed a statistically significant association between authoritative parenting and toilet training outcome (p = .018, p .05), though accounting for a modest proportion of the overall variance. These findings suggest that while authoritative parenting contributes positively to early toilet training progression, consistent parental guidance and child-centered readiness factors remain vital.
Background: Developmental screening and responsive caregiving are essential components of early childhood healthcare. Parenting styles may be associated with developmental screening outcomes. Objectives: To examine the association between parenting styles and developmental screening categories among children aged 2 to 5 years in Sukabumi, Indonesia. Methods: This quantitative cross sectional study included 260 mother–child pairs recruited through reported cluster random sampling. Parenting styles were assessed using the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire, while development was screened using the Kuesioner Pra Skrining Perkembangan. Associations were analyzed using Pearson chi square and Cramér’s V. Results: Authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting accounted for 49.6%, 24.2%, and 26.2% of participants, respectively. Developmental screening indicated normal findings in 67.7%, suspect findings in 24.2%, and delay findings in 8.1%. A significant association was observed (X² = 21.148; df = 4; p < 0.001; Cramér’s V = 0.202). Suspect findings were highest with authoritarian parenting (41.3%), while delay findings were highest with permissive parenting (14.7%). Conclusions: Parenting styles were associated with developmental screening categories. Findings support caregiver counseling and routine developmental screening but do not establish causality.

The relationship between parenting behaviour and children's socio-emotional functioning is well documented in Western samples, yet evidence from primary-school-age children in Andhra Pradesh, India, is limited. This cross-sectional correlational study examined whether parent-reported authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting were related to children's total difficulties and prosocial behaviour. Fifty parents of children aged 6-12 years completed an online 25-item researcher-developed questionnaire. Most parents (86%) reported predominantly authoritative behaviour. Authoritative parenting was unrelated to prosocial behaviour (r = .06) and difficulties (r = -.03), and authoritarian parenting was unrelated to difficulties (r = .13), so the main hypotheses were not supported. Authoritarian parenting was negatively correlated with prosocial behaviour (r = -.37, p = .009), and children from joint families scored higher on prosocial behaviour than children from nuclear families (d = 0.70). Scale reliability was low (α = -.21 to .28), so the findings are tentative. Validated tools and larger samples are needed.
Parenting practices may shape young children's opportunities to develop English-speaking skills in bilingual family environments. This study aimed to explore parenting styles and parental communication practices in relation to children's English-speaking ability in four bilingual families in Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through online semi-structured interviews with parents, naturalistic observations of parent-child interactions, and children's English-speaking activities, including storytelling and picture description. The findings indicated that three families demonstrated characteristics of authoritative parenting, including emotional warmth, regular language activities, and active parental involvement. These practices were accompanied by children's reported willingness and confidence to speak English. In contrast, one family demonstrated a more permissive approach, with less structured language exposure and less active parental involvement. The findings also highlighted the role of responsive communication, shared educational media activities, and consistent opportunities to use English in everyday interactions. Given the small sample and qualitative design, the findings provide contextual insights rather than evidence of causal effects. This study highlights the potential importance of supportive parenting practices in creating opportunities for young children to use English in bilingual family settings.
This study examined the relationship between home learning support, parenting style, and academic achievement among Grade 1 learners at Hinatuan North Central Elementary School, Schools Division of Surigao del Sur, during School Year 2025–2026. Employing a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design, the study involved 74 parents or guardians whose responses were analyzed alongside learners’ academic achievement obtained from official school records. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires and analyzed through weighted mean, standard deviation, ranking, and Pearson product-moment correlation. Findings revealed that home learning support was very high (M = 3.4500, SD = 0.6051), with learning resources and study conditions receiving the highest rating, while homework guidance and feedback ranked lowest. Parenting style was generally high (M = 2.5240, SD = 0.5900), with authoritative parenting obtaining the highest mean and permissive parenting the lowest. Learners demonstrated high academic achievement (M = 90.1351, SD = 3.2993), with 63.5% classified as Outstanding. However, correlation analysis revealed no statistically significant relationship between home learning support and academic achievement (r = 0.0707, p = 0.5496) or between parenting style and academic achievement (r = 0.0968, p = 0.4118). Both relationships were very weak and positive. The study concluded that although parents reported substantial learning support and structured parenting practices, these factors were not significantly associated with learners’ recorded academic performance. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening home-school collaboration, improving parental guidance practices, and considering additional learner-related and school-related factors when developing educational support programs for early-grade learners.
This study aims to explore how parents play a role in helping adolescents develop emotional and spiritual intelligence. Adolescence is a crucial stage in the formation of identity, where the ability to manage emotions and understand spiritual values is essential. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving ten families in Karangligar Village who have teenage children. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that parents play a significant role in guiding adolescents through emotional challenges by applying open communication, emotional support, and positive role modeling. Meanwhile, spiritual intelligence is nurtured through regular religious practices, reflective discussions, and everyday moral teaching. The authoritative parenting style which balances warmth and firmness proves to be the most supportive approach in this process. This study is expected to provide insights for developing a more holistic model of family-based education that is aligned with the needs of adolescents today, and serve as a foundation for further research in broader social and cultural contexts.
This study examined the relationship between perceived parenting style, filial piety, and life satisfaction among Chinese young adults. A survey was administered to 395 university students in Hong Kong on their perceptions about their parents' parenting practices, filial piety beliefs, and life satisfaction. The results suggest that perceived authoritative parenting is associated with reciprocal filial piety and contributes positively to the young adults' life satisfaction. Both perceived authoritative and authoritarian parenting were associated with authoritarian filial piety, but authoritarian filial piety was not associated with young adults' life satisfaction. Due to the familial interdependence emphasized in the Chinese cultural context, Chinese adolescents' filial beliefs are related to the parenting they have experienced, and these beliefs may be associated with their psychosocial outcomes.
