Discourse competence plays a crucial role in preparing English as Second Language (ESL) learners to produce coherent and cohesive communication. Nevertheless, the effective use of cohesive devices remains a challenge for many ESL learners, hindering their ability to produce coherent and meaningful discourse. To address this issue, the Case of the Lost Linkers Digital Educational Escape Room (DEER) was developed as a gamified learning tool to support the development of discourse competence. This study aimed to investigate ESL learners’ acceptance of the DEER game using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). A quantitative survey design was employed involving 151 ESL learners from a Malaysian public university. Data were collected using a five-section questionnaire consisting of demographic information and four TAM constructs: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward use, and behavioural intention to use. Descriptive analysis revealed high levels of acceptance across all constructs. Learners perceived the DEER game as useful, user-friendly, enjoyable, and effective for learning linkers and cohesive devices. They also expressed strong intentions to continue using and recommending the game. The findings suggest that DEER has considerable potential as an engaging and learner-centred tool for supporting discourse competence development in ESL contexts.

Beyond engagement: Interactive response systems, student attitudes, and technology acceptance in University EFL classrooms

Interactive Response Systems (IRS) are increasingly used in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms to support participation, feedback, and interaction. However, less is known about how IRS-supported instruction influences students’ broader classroom attitudes and how students’ acceptance of IRS can be explained from a technology-acceptance perspective. This study examined whether changes in university EFL students’ classroom attitudes differed between an IRS-supported intact class and a traditional-instruction intact class, and investigated whether perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and prior technological experience predicted students’ attitudes toward IRS. A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test control-group design was adopted with 102 undergraduate students at a Chinese university. One intact class received IRS-supported instruction through the Unipus platform (n = 51), while another received traditional instruction without IRS integration (n = 51). Student attitudes were measured across eight dimensions: learning atmosphere, participation, attention, confidence, interactivity with teacher, interactivity with peers, learning support, and learning achievement/satisfaction. Mixed-design ANOVA showed significant Group × Time interaction effects across all dimensions, indicating greater attitudinal improvement in the IRS-supported group. Follow-up post-test comparisons also showed significantly more positive attitudes in the IRS-supported group, with medium to large effect sizes. Regression analysis showed that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly predicted attitudes toward IRS, whereas prior technological experience did not. The model explained 40.2% of the variance. These findings suggest that IRS-supported instruction may provide additional pedagogical support for improving EFL students’ classroom attitudes when meaningfully integrated into lesson design.

Introduction This study investigates the effect of project-based learning (PjBL), integrated with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), on university students' self-regulated learning (SRL), with particular attention to the mediating roles of perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU). Methods A quantitative explanatory design was employed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM). Data were collected from 250 undergraduate students enrolled in an educational technology programme using a validated questionnaire measuring PjBL implementation, PU, PEOU, and SRL. Results The findings showed that PjBL had a significant direct effect on SRL ( β = 0.41, p < 0.001). PjBL also demonstrated significant indirect effects on SRL through PU ( β = 0.19) and PEOU ( β = 0.15), with a combined indirect effect of β = 0.34, accounting for 45.3% of the total effect ( β = 0.75). Since the direct effect remained significant after both mediators were included, the results indicate complementary partial mediation rather than full mediation. Discussion and Conclusion The findings suggest that technology acceptance constitutes a substantial, but not exclusive, mechanism through which technology-supported PjBL enhances students' self-regulated learning, particularly in goal setting, self-monitoring, time management, motivation, and reflective learning. The study extends the application of TAM beyond technology adoption by demonstrating its explanatory role in understanding the development of SRL in higher education.
