Understanding Betting Risks among Urban Youth in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Ethnographic Study

Gloria Peter Amasi; John Hughson; Patrick Masanja International journal of social sciences and humanities review, 2026, Vol. 16, Issue 5 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23806135

Sports betting has expanded across sub-Saharan Africa, increasingly intersecting with young people’s aspirations, technological accessibility, and economic insecurity. Although awareness of gambling-related risks may influence young people’s decisions, recognising such risks does not necessarily lead to cessation of betting. This study explored how young bettors understood betting risks in Shibai Street, Buhongwa Ward, Mwanza, Tanzania. A qualitative cross-sectional study employing ethnographic methods was conducted between July and August 2025. Data were collected from 18 purposively selected active bettors aged 18-29 years through in-depth semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and informal conversations. Interviews were conducted in Kiswahili, audio-recorded, transcribed into English, and analysed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s approach. The findings were interpreted using Verstehen, strain, and rational choice perspectives. Participants identified financial loss, difficulty stopping, stress and mental distress, relationship conflict, theft, reduced attention to work or learning, reduced work-seeking, dishonesty, deepening poverty, and loss of personal possessions as important betting-related risks. However, awareness of these risks did not consistently result in withdrawal from betting. Some participants continued because betting provided hope, expectations of quick financial gains, peer influence, and a perceived opportunity to escape poverty. The study concludes that understanding betting risks among youth requires attention to the meanings attached to betting and the economic and social circumstances within which participation occurs. Risk education should therefore be complemented by livelihood opportunities, community support, counselling, and appropriate harm-prevention measures.

Introduction Gambling problems (GP) remain underexplored among forensic psychiatric patients (FPPs). Given the associations between GP, mental distress, and criminal behavior, it is imperative to investigate GP in this population. Aims This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of gambling and GP among FPPs in Denmark and explore associations between GP and sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical variables. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted, including 214 FPPs across 19 hospital units in two major Danish Health Regions. The primary measures were past-year gambling and GP assessed via the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). Secondary measures included gambling behavior (e.g., expenditure, frequency, self-exclusion), sociodemographic (e.g., age, gender, educational attainment), financial (e.g., consumer loans, monetary savings), and clinical variables (e.g., length of stay, psychiatric diagnoses). Gambling FPPs were asked if they had felt compelled to commit crime due to gambling during the past 12 months. Correlates of GP were identified by comparing higher-risk (PGSI ≥ 3) to lower-risk (PGSI ≤2) gambling FPPs. Prevalence was compared to a gender- and age-matched normative sample from a recent Danish national gambling survey. Results The prevalence of past-year gambling among FPPs was 46% (95% CI = 39-53%), while the prevalence of severe GP (PGSI ≥ 8, indicative of gambling disorder) was 12% (95% CI: 8.1-17%). Relative to lower-risk gambling FPPs (PGSI ≤2), higher-risk FPPs (PGSI ≥ 3) were more likely to be male, to express poorer financial conditions, and to have felt compelled to engage in criminal behavior due to gambling. GP prevalence was markedly higher among FPPs than in the normative sample, where 1.8% reported severe GP (PGSI ≥ 8) (95% CI: 1.3-2.5%). Discussion and Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the prevalence of gambling and GP among FPPs, and the rates were considerable. Given the consequences that GP may have on FPP health and economy, and thus recovery, our findings underscore the potential benefits of screening for and addressing GP in forensic psychiatric care. There is a strong need for further research to inform tailored interventions, improve treatment, and mitigate the potential impact of gambling on recidivism risk.

Empirical evidence indicates that societal crises and adverse conditions can negatively impact population mental health. The Big Five personality traits – neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness –significantly influence stress responses. In this article, we examine how personality traits were associated with mental distress during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on data from the Understanding America Study, we find that, since the pandemic began, individuals with high levels of neuroticism were more likely to experience mental distress. By contrast, the remaining personality traits exhibited weaker, inconsistent, or statistically insignificant associations with mental health trajectories. Further analyses indicate that the heightened vulnerability among individuals high in neuroticism was accompanied by elevated risk perceptions, differential adoption of protective behaviors, and less adaptive coping patterns. Taken together, these findings suggest that personality-linked differences, particularly driven by the level of neuroticism, help explain heterogeneity in mental health responses to large-scale societal stressors. Our findings point to the relevance of personality traits (particularly neuroticism) for identifying individuals who may benefit from targeted mental health support during future crises.

Harris Kaloudis; Huihui Song; Tim Wilson; Emma C. Halliday; Ben Barr; Emma Coombes Journal of Mental Health, 2026, pp. 1-12 https://doi.org/10.1080/09638237.2026.2732873

BACKGROUND: Financial difficulties and mental ill health are closely associated. Evidence on specialist financial and welfare-related advice and support services for people engaging with mental health services in the UK is limited. This study reports findings from the qualitative component of a mixed-methods evaluation of the Money and Mental Health (MAMH) service. AIMS: To examine how the MAMH service supports referred clients, and the factors that influence its impact. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with fourteen MAMH clients and two focus groups with nine MAMH caseworkers thematically analysed. RESULTS: Engagement with the service was associated with reported improvements in client mental health, including suicide prevention, and reduced psychological distress and anxiety particularly when these were linked to financial matters. Central to its impact was the service's delivery model of intensive, relational casework which included a single dedicated caseworker; flexible, "wraparound" practical advice and support; an open-ended timeframe of support; supporting client engagement and action-taking; and attunement to clients' emotional needs. CONCLUSIONS: The MAMH service provided effective support to people using mental health services by addressing social determinants of mental health. The service's delivery model offers one blueprint for adapting advice and support services so that they effectively complement mental health services.
