Rising living costs and expensive higher education place many students under financial pressure, yet the evidence from Southeast Asia has not been brought together. Following the Arksey and O’Malley framework and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines, a total of 239 records were screened, comprising 174 records retrieved from Scopus and 65 records from non-Scopus sources. Eleven studies from five countries (the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand) were charted and synthesised narratively. Six were quantitative surveys, and five of the eleven appeared in 2025 or 2026. Six themes emerged. First, costs extend beyond tuition: programme costs, rent, and other indirect expenses create hardship even where tuition is free. Second, access to family resources and financial aid is unequal. Third, financial strain is reported alongside psychological distress and academic strain, a pattern of co-occurrence rather than demonstrated cause. Fourth, students cope through income generation, saving and economising, building financial literacy, cognitive reappraisal, spiritual support, and selective use of social support. Fifth, financial literacy and behaviour appear to shape financial well-being, although findings on financial stress conflict. Sixth, authors call for support beyond tuition, but no study evaluated an intervention. The evidence is mostly cross-sectional, and no eligible study came from Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, or Timor-Leste. Malaysia contributes one study, which examines financial well-being rather than coping strategies. Future work needs harmonised measures, longitudinal and intervention designs, and wider country coverage.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) shape the lifecourse psychosocial well-being, yet evidence linking ACEs to pre-pregnancy stressful life events (pre-PSLEs) across generations remains limited. This study examined the associations between ACEs and pre-PSLEs across two generations of women and explored pathways of intergenerational stress transmission. A total of 2,235 mother-offspring pairs were obtained from the Grandmothers, Mothers, and Their Children’s Health study. Maternal and offspring ACEs were assessed using the Childhood Trauma Screener. Offspring pre-PSLEs included conflict with partners, conflict with family members, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, deaths of friends or relatives, and financial stress. We used multivariable logistic regression to examine associations between ACEs and pre-PSLEs, and structural equation modeling to explore mediation by offspring ACEs. Overall, 18.17% of mothers and 14.27% of offspring report ACEs; 29.49% of offspring report pre-PSLEs. Both maternal (OR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.41–2.27) and offspring ACEs (OR = 2.23, 95% CI: 1.73–2.89) significantly increase the odds of offspring pre-PSLEs, showing dose–response relationships. These patterns persist across all ACE subtypes. Offspring ACEs mediate 79.64% of the association between maternal ACEs and offspring pre-PSLEs. ACEs are associated with pre-PSLEs both within and across generations, suggesting a pathway of stress transmission from early life into adulthood. These findings highlight the importance of early identification and intervention for ACEs within pre-pregnancy health management. Difficult childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect, can affect health and wellbeing throughout life. We investigated whether these experiences, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), are associated with stressful life events (SLEs) before pregnancy and whether a mother’s childhood adversity is linked to her daughter’s stress before pregnancy. We studied 2,235 mother–daughter pairs in China. Mothers and daughters reported their childhood experiences, and daughters also reported SLEs during the year before pregnancy. We found that both maternal and offspring ACEs were associated with greater pre-pregnancy stress. Most of the association between maternal ACEs and daughters’ pre-pregnancy stress was explained by daughters’ own ACEs. These findings highlight the importance of identifying and supporting women with childhood adversity before pregnancy to improve maternal and child health.

Transitions in preschool children’s internalizing and externalizing symptoms before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of family disruptions in Singapore

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted family routines, economic security, and caregiving contexts, with potential consequences for children’s mental health. However, less is known about heterogeneity in preschool children’s changes in internalizing and externalizing symptoms from before to during the pandemic and about how pandemic-related family disruptions predicted these transitions. This study examined symptom transitions among 2,601 preschool children from the Singapore Longitudinal Early Development Study, using pre-pandemic data from 2018–2019 and during-pandemic data from 2021 ( M age = 4.92 years, SD = 1.18; 50.17% girls). Latent profile analysis identified three groups at both waves: low, mild, and severe symptoms. Random intercept latent transition analysis revealed four transition patterns: stable low symptoms (63.40%), worsening symptoms (22.30%), stable mild symptoms (6.23%), and improved symptoms (7.73%). Compared with the stable low symptoms group, older children and those from families negatively impacted by the pandemic in work and family function were more likely to experience stable mild or worsening symptoms. Ethnic differences were also observed, and pandemic-related financial stress was associated with both worsening and improved symptom patterns. These findings highlight heterogeneous symptom transitions among preschool children and underscore the importance of considering demographic characteristics and family-level disruptions when supporting children’s mental health following large-scale crises.
