Deployment-related traumatic stressors and subclinical depression among peacekeeping veterans

Alex Siira; Toni Survonen; P. E. Simola; Sami Määttä Journal of Military Studies, 2026 https://doi.org/10.2478/jms-2026-0003

Abstract Subclinical depression among peacekeeping veterans remains understudied despite its prevalence and potential to progress to major depression. This study examined associations between deployment-related traumatic stressors and subclinical depressive symptoms in 2,258 Finnish peacekeeping veterans. Subclinical depression was measured using the Depression Scale (DEPS) and traumatic stressor exposure via a 16-item questionnaire. Frequent traumatic stressor exposure was associated with an increased risk of subclinical depression, with 5 out of 16 stressors showing significant associations. The strongest predictor was feeling powerless to help sufficiently within one’s role as peacekeeper, suggesting moral injury significantly contributes to the development of subclinical depression. These results highlight the importance of developing post-deployment screening to detect non-danger-based stressors and subclinical conditions that carry the risk of progressing into severe mental health disorders.

Detransition, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Moral Injury

Alison Clayton; Kathleen McDeavitt Archives of Sexual Behavior, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10508-026-03669-x

There are increasing reports of individuals who, after undergoing medical gender-affirming treatments (GAT) for gender incongruence/gender dysphoria, subsequently detransition and/or express regret regarding these interventions. Although detransition experiences are heterogeneous, some individuals who detransition describe substantial adverse physical consequences and psychological distress resulting from the GAT they received. The purpose of this article is to assist mental health professionals in their understanding and conceptualizing of detransition experiences within the existing Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) framework. It is posited that a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder, as delineated in the most recent text revision of the DSM (DSM-5-TR) (American Psychiatric Association, 2022), may be applicable for some individuals who have detransitioned. Furthermore, the relevance of the moral injury concept-recently incorporated into the DSM-5-TR under code Z65.8 (American Psychiatric Association, 2025)-as it pertains to this population, is discussed.

Story for Every Fall: Adam and Eve as a Narrative of Healing and Return

Merve ALTINLI MACIC; Süeda Akgün Spiritual Psychology and Counseling, 2026, Vol. 11, Issue 3, pp. 349-381 https://doi.org/10.37898/spiritualpc.1864841

This article examines the narrative of Adam and Eve from the perspectives of psychology of religion and spiritual counseling and care, drawing on the therapeutic functions of sacred texts. Grounded in the long-standing healing power of narratives, bibliotherapy is discussed within the context of sacred texts, with particular attention to spiritual bibliotherapy’s capacity to access individuals’ moral, emotional, and existential processes. Within this framework, the study relates the Adam and Eve narrative to the concept of moral injury, which has gained increasing prominence in contemporary psychological literature, and explores the potential of sacred narratives in processes of spiritual repair. The research adopts a qualitative approach, employing purposive literature review and conceptual analysis. Classical and modern interpretations of the Adam and Eve narrative in the Torah and the Qur’an, together with literature on psychology of religion and moral injury, were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework. Four core themes were identified: will and responsibility; transgression and rebellion; shame and alienation; and hope and redemption. The findings demonstrate that the narrative makes visible the moral and spiritual ruptures following value violations and offers a meaningful foundation of hope for spiritual healing through confrontation and repentance. The study concludes that the Adam and Eve narrative can serve as a bibliotherapeutic resource in spiritual care.

Mapping moral injury: Development and feasibility of the Clinical Interview for Moral Injury—military version (CIMI-M)

Mariëlle L. de Goede; Paul A. Boelen; Litz Brett T.; F. Jackie June ter Heide PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 9, pp. e0359553 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0359553

Objective There is currently no clinical interview to assess exposure to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) and moral injury, the potential clinical outcome associated with PMIEs. To enable a person-centered assessment of PMIEs and moral injury in military veterans, we developed a structured, non-diagnostic clinical interview to support descriptive assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning, and conducted an initial evaluation of its feasibility, acceptability, and clinical utility. Method The Clinical Interview for Moral Injury—Military Version (CIMI-M) was developed through an iterative, stakeholder-informed process. Questions from existing moral injury instruments were selected, adapted and supplemented to create an interview with a descriptive, theory-driven approach. Clinicians (N = 7) and military veterans (N = 8) at two Dutch trauma centers who conducted the CIMI-M were interviewed and completed questionnaires assessing the CIMI-M’s feasibility, acceptability, and clinical utility. Interviews were analyzed using the General Inductive Approach for qualitative evaluation data. Results Mean evaluation scores were 7.63 for veterans and 8.41 for clinicians (10-point scale). Qualitative analysis of interview transcripts revealed that the CIMI-M helped veterans share their experiences, while clinicians found it valuable for fostering trust and planning treatment. Both groups agreed that the CIMI-M generated insightful content about PMIEs and moral injury. Based on feedback, several interview questions were revised or added. Conclusions We found preliminary evidence that the CIMI-M is a feasible, acceptable, and clinically useful descriptive interview. It offers a potentially valuable treatment-planning tool that complements paper-and-pencil approaches that assess PMIEs and moral injury. Further evaluation, including in non-veteran populations, is needed.
