CONTEXT: Youth mental health is shaped by interacting individual, relational, and structural factors that vary across communities, yet few tools integrate these drivers into youth-specific, geographically granular measures for decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the development and preliminary validation of ThriveAtlas, a geographically granular index designed to identify factors that prevent youth from thriving. DESIGN: ThriveAtlas was developed through a multistep process including a targeted literature review; selection and construction of indicators from public and proprietary data sources; aggregation into thematic domains and a composite index; and preliminary validation using county-level mental health outcomes. SETTING: County-level analysis using school-based survey data from California (California Healthy Kids Survey, 2021-2023). PARTICIPANTS: Ninth-grade students across 53 California counties. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: County-level principal components derived from 5 self-reported mental health indicators; prioritization overlap with the Social Vulnerability Index (Jaccard statistic); and univariate explanatory power (R2) of ThriveAtlas domains versus Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) domains. RESULTS: The review identified key gaps in existing tools: youth-focused indices often emphasize general well-being rather than mental health, while structurally focused indices lack youth specificity or substate granularity. ThriveAtlas revealed geographic variability in vulnerability, including regional clusters and isolated high-risk counties. Validation analyses showed expected patterns in California, where higher vulnerability aligned with greater distress and lower well-being. ThriveAtlas and SVI were correlated (Spearman ρ = 0.66) across California counties; however, ThriveAtlas themes better explained county-level mental health outcomes than SVI domains (R2 = 0.41 vs. 0.27), and the 2 tools agreed on only one-third of high-priority counties (Jaccard = 0.33). CONCLUSION: ThriveAtlas addresses a critical measurement gap by providing a youth-centered, multidimensional, and geographically granular index of vulnerability. Early validation supports its utility as a decision-relevant signal to identify communities with elevated youth mental health challenges and inform targeted intervention strategies.
OBJECTIVE: Increasing numbers of young people (YP) are seeking support for eating disorders, creating a growing unmet need for timely and accessible treatment. While guided self-help (GSH) interventions have demonstrated effectiveness for other youth mental health difficulties, options for eating disorders remain limited. SPICE (Short Psychological Intervention for Children with Eating Disorders), a transdiagnostic CBT-based GSH program, was developed to address this gap. This qualitative study explored participant perspectives on the mechanisms through which SPICE may support recovery. METHOD: SPICE comprises eight weekly modules supported by a 30-min guided therapy session each week. Six female adolescents with eating disorders and their parents who completed SPICE participated in semi-structured post-intervention interviews. Data were analyzed using critical realist thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four key putative mechanisms were identified: (1) Interpersonal support (from the guide and parents) as a catalyst for change and for keeping momentum going. (2) Increased knowledge of eating disorders and associated cognitive and behavioural factors leading to positive changes. (3) In vivo experiential learning as key to implementing specific strategies and taking ownership over change. (4) Context, that is, individual and systemic factors promoting and inhibiting change. DISCUSSION: Interpersonal relationships were perceived to promote engagement and change. Participants reported that psychoeducation empowered them and their families, while experiential learning helped translate strategies into everyday practice. Flexible and tailored approaches were considered important for improving accessibility and effectiveness. Perceived barriers included complex module content, remote delivery, and competing commitments. Findings provide preliminary support for GSH interventions for eating disorders in YP and identify areas for refining future intervention.
Bullying is widespread and negatively impacts youth mental health. However, differences between in-person bullying, cyberbullying, and their combination are understudied. To compare the prevalence, clinical presentations, and impairment associated with in-person bullying, cyberbullying, and their combination among depressed youth. Participants were N = 1,281 depressed and/or suicidal youth in Texas aged 8-17 years. Chi-square tests compared bullying prevalence across age, sociodemographic, and identity groups. Multivariate analysis of variance and post-hoc tests compared clinical presentations across forms of bullying experienced. Bullying prevalence differed by age group. Youth who experienced cyberbullying or combined bullying reported greater depression, anxiety, and impairment than non-bullied youth. Prevention and intervention strategies should address the combined effects of in-person and cyberbullying.
