CONTEXT: Youth mental health is shaped by interacting individual, relational, and structural factors that vary across communities, yet few tools integrate these drivers into youth-specific, geographically granular measures for decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the development and preliminary validation of ThriveAtlas, a geographically granular index designed to identify factors that prevent youth from thriving. DESIGN: ThriveAtlas was developed through a multistep process including a targeted literature review; selection and construction of indicators from public and proprietary data sources; aggregation into thematic domains and a composite index; and preliminary validation using county-level mental health outcomes. SETTING: County-level analysis using school-based survey data from California (California Healthy Kids Survey, 2021-2023). PARTICIPANTS: Ninth-grade students across 53 California counties. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: County-level principal components derived from 5 self-reported mental health indicators; prioritization overlap with the Social Vulnerability Index (Jaccard statistic); and univariate explanatory power (R2) of ThriveAtlas domains versus Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) domains. RESULTS: The review identified key gaps in existing tools: youth-focused indices often emphasize general well-being rather than mental health, while structurally focused indices lack youth specificity or substate granularity. ThriveAtlas revealed geographic variability in vulnerability, including regional clusters and isolated high-risk counties. Validation analyses showed expected patterns in California, where higher vulnerability aligned with greater distress and lower well-being. ThriveAtlas and SVI were correlated (Spearman ρ = 0.66) across California counties; however, ThriveAtlas themes better explained county-level mental health outcomes than SVI domains (R2 = 0.41 vs. 0.27), and the 2 tools agreed on only one-third of high-priority counties (Jaccard = 0.33). CONCLUSION: ThriveAtlas addresses a critical measurement gap by providing a youth-centered, multidimensional, and geographically granular index of vulnerability. Early validation supports its utility as a decision-relevant signal to identify communities with elevated youth mental health challenges and inform targeted intervention strategies.

Changes in Grade X Students’ Informatics Learning Outcomes Following Wordwall-Assisted Instruction: A One-Group Pretest–Posttest Study

Indah Furwati; Fitri Maiziani; Novrianti; Elsa Masriani Journal of Multidisciplinary Science MIKAILALSYS, 2026, Vol. 4, Issue 3, pp. 8830-8843 https://doi.org/10.58578/mikailalsys.v4i3.12485

Students’ learning outcomes in Informatics remain a challenge when conventional instructional media offer limited interaction, contributing to passive engagement and difficulties understanding learning materials. This study examined changes in Grade X students’ learning outcomes after the implementation of Wordwall-assisted interactive learning media for the Computer Systems topic at SMAN 1 Sawahlunto, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students from class X E4. Students completed a multiple-choice achievement test before instruction, participated in Computer Systems learning activities supported by Wordwall, and completed a posttest afterward. The intervention incorporated game-based activities to support practice and engagement; however, the research records did not specify its duration. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test, with normalized gain (N-Gain) used to assess the level of improvement. The mean score increased from 53.67 on the pretest to 77.67 on the posttest, a difference of 24.00 points. The paired-samples t-test identified a statistically significant difference between scores (t = 8.664, df = 29, p < 0.001). The mean N-Gain was 0.538, indicating moderate improvement. These results show that students’ scores were higher after the Wordwall-assisted learning intervention. Nevertheless, the study did not include a control group, the observed change cannot be attributed to Wordwall alone; instructional or testing-related factors may also have contributed. Wordwall therefore be considered a useful supplementary medium for Informatics instruction, while further studies using control groups, larger samples, and documented intervention durations are needed to strengthen conclusions about its effectiveness.

Awareness of Youth-Friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health Services among Undergraduate Students at Saint Augustine University of Tanzania, Mwanza, Tanzania: A Cross-Sectional Study

Frank Deus Samson; Paskas Wagana; Johnson Mavole International journal of social sciences and humanities review, 2026

Background: Awareness of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services (YFSRHS) is an important starting point for enabling young people to identify and seek appropriate sexual and reproductive health information and care. However, awareness of these services may vary across settings, including higher education institutions. Objective: To determine the level of awareness of YFSRHS among undergraduate students at Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), Malimbe Campus. Methods: A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students at SAUT Malimbe Campus. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. Of 109 questionnaires distributed, 108 completed questionnaires were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize students’ awareness and reported sources of information. Results: Of the 108 respondents, 96 (88.9%) reported having heard of YFSRHS, while 12 (11.1%) had not. Social media was the most frequently reported source of information (44.0%), followed by friends or peers (41.0%) and health facilities (36.0%). University programmes and posters or advertisements were reported less frequently. Conclusion: Most respondents had heard of YFSRHS, with social media and peer networks serving as prominent information channels. Strengthening accurate information through these channels, alongside university-based communication, may help address the awareness gap among students who remain unreached.

Insecurity and Teaching-Learning Outcomes in Universal Basic Education Primary Schools: Evidence from Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria

IKECHUKWU-DURU STEPHANIE CHINAEKWU; Mirjam Tulitileni Dineinge East African Journal of Arts and Social Sciences, 2026, Vol. 9, Issue 4, pp. 347-361 https://doi.org/10.37284/eajass.9.4.6147

Insecurity has become a significant threat to the effective delivery of basic education in Nigeria, particularly in communities affected by banditry, kidnapping, armed attacks, and communal violence. This study examined the influence of insecurity on teaching-learning outcomes in Universal Basic Education primary schools in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Specifically, it investigated the effects of insecurity on pupils’ academic performance and school attendance and identified strategies for reducing its adverse effects. The study adopted a qualitative documentary research design and relied on secondary data obtained from government publications, policy documents, institutional reports, international organisations, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The selected documents were analysed using qualitative content analysis and organised according to the study’s major themes. The findings revealed that insecurity negatively affects pupils’ academic performance by reducing instructional time, disrupting curriculum coverage, weakening concentration, and creating fear within the learning environment. It also reduces school attendance as parents may prevent their children from attending school because of kidnapping, attacks, unsafe travel routes, and instability within surrounding communities. Consequently, insecurity undermines the implementation of Universal Basic Education by limiting regular participation and disrupting stable teaching and learning conditions. The study concludes that ensuring school safety is essential for achieving the objectives of free and compulsory basic education. It recommends strengthening school security, implementing the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, improving community participation, providing psychosocial support, protecting routes to school, establishing emergency response systems, and adopting flexible learning arrangements during periods of disruption.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the economic self-management strategies used by students of the Faculty of Business Sciences of the Technical University of Machala during their academic training; Interest in this study arose from the need to understand how students face economic difficulties that arise in their training. A mixed approach was applied and a survey was used on a representative sample of 367 students, identifying the main source of income for a part of the student population, evidencing alternatives to sustain their expenses and reduce their economic dependence. The most used strategies were observed when they go through difficult situations and if the income is sufficient to cover their expenses, reflecting the existence of limitations and conditioning the way of organizing their resources and decision making. Likewise, it was identified that students usually perceive an impact. in their academic performance. The results allowed us to understand the economic dynamics experienced by university students and provide information for the design of institutional strategies that contribute to strengthening permanence, well-being and academic success.
