This study investigates how a novice EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher enacts professional identity within the context of reading instruction. While prior research has established the dynamic and multifaceted nature of teacher identity, limited attention has been given to how professional identity is constructed and enacted through subject-specific pedagogical practices, particularly in reading instruction. This qualitative case study draws on interview and classroom observation data to explore how a novice EFL teacher enacts professional identities in reading instruction. The findings suggest that the teacher’s professional identity is not a fixed set of roles but is expressed through situated teaching practices and professional reflections. Specifically, three interrelated identity positions were identified—facilitator of meaning-making, cultural and textual guide, and reflective learner. These positions were reflected in instructional practices such as scaffolding, interpretive questioning, and the provision of cultural and textual background knowledge, as well as in the teacher’s willingness to learn from students and engage in professional development. Furthermore, the findings highlight the relationship between the teacher’s professional identity, individual agency, and the working conditions of her teaching context. By situating teacher identity within the practices of reading instruction, this study extends existing research by foregrounding the practice-based and context-sensitive nature of novice teacher identity. An Activity Theory perspective further informs the interpretation of how professional identity relates to pedagogical practices, instructional tools, and contextual conditions.
This study explores how teachers interpret and adapt professional learning practices to align with their contextual needs and professional beliefs, with an emphasis on teacher ownership. It investigates how pedagogical coaching can support teachers in taking ownership of pedagogical principles and practices within the framework of agency, identity, and the zone of enactment. The research employs a qualitative case study of two teachers at a U.S. urban elementary school, who implemented the Enduring Principles of Learning (EPL) framework with the support of a pedagogical coach. Data analysis from video-recorded coaching sessions and teacher-student instructional conversations revealed that the teachers effectively enacted and took ownership of two EPL principles: Instructional Conversation and Critical Stance. The findings highlight the importance of integrating agency, identity, and the zone of enactment as a theoretical framework to better support teachers in owning their professional learning processes.
Introduction Teacher identity formation is a dynamic process shaped by professional experience, emotion, wellbeing, and culturally available meanings. This study examines how pre-service teachers in China drew on Confucian and Daoist repertoires when reflecting on their developing teacher identities. Methods Participants were 143 pre-service teachers at one Chinese normal university. They wrote prompted reflective narratives about coursework, micro-teaching, lesson planning, educational observation, and imagined classroom responsibilities. The analysis combined descriptive keyword mapping with reflexive thematic analysis. Results Four related processes were identified: Confucian striving as a language of perseverance and self-cultivation; Daoist release as a resource for non-contention, recognizing limits, and emotional restoration; situational switching between these repertoires in response to changing demands; and sustainable teacher formation as an orientation toward responsibility with limits. The study proposes cultural identity regulation as an integrative analytic heuristic for understanding how culturally available meanings connect academic experiences, emotional calibration, and imagined teacher selves. Discussion The findings suggest that Confucian striving and Daoist release provided participants with culturally familiar ways to interpret effort, pressure, and anticipated responsibility during teacher preparation. Their value lay in helping participants connect perseverance with self-cultivation and responsibility, while also recognizing limits, reducing destructive comparison, and restoring emotional balance. Cultural identity regulation captures this narrated negotiation of professional commitment and personal sustainability in the formation of an imagined teacher self.
Teacher education (TE) policy is often caught between preparing teachers as agents of social change and a narrow ‘teacher effectiveness’ paradigm. This article examines this tension in Norway, where egalitarian traditions meet global neoliberal accountability discourses. Analysing the pivotal Norwegian TE curriculum policy document, Stortingsmelding nr. 11 (Minstry of Education and Research, 2008–2009), the study uses the Public Good Professionalism (PGP) framework as an analytical lens to assess the extent to which the policy enables the development of teachers as transformative public good professionals. We employ an AI-assisted deductive content analysis using a multi-coder ensemble of nine GPT-4 assistants configured with diverse parameters (temperature and top_p) to provide a parametric stress-test of the coding scheme. Findings reveal a significant discrepancy between stated social equality goals and substantive content. Capabilities explicitly addressed in policy (e.g. Informed Vision) show high ensemble convergence but are instrumentally reframed, stripped of their transformative potential. Conversely, capabilities essential for social justice (e.g. Social and Collective Struggle) show the lowest convergence, reflecting their marginalization. The study concludes that the policy prioritizes a ‘proficient technician’ over a ‘public good professional’, revealing a fundamental structural barrier to socially just teacher education in Norway.
Mathematics anxiety and the dominance of procedural memorisation over conceptual understanding remain persistent challenges in Indonesian schools, yet little is known about how teachers themselves experience pedagogical reform. This study aims to examine how sustained engagement with the GASING (GAmpang, ASyik, dan menyenaNGkan; easy, enjoyable, and fun) method reshapes a mathematics educator’s epistemological orientation, affective stance, and professional identity. Using reflexive autoethnography, the data came mainly from the experience of one mathematics educator, documented in personal field journals, reflective memos, and classroom materials across a fourteen-week training phase and a six-month classroom implementation phase. Iterative thematic coding, member checking, and independent coding of a data subsample turned these records into four themes: mathematical alienation under transmission-centred instruction; concretization as an epistemological rupture; affective and motivational renewal, from fear-governed performance toward curiosity-governed exploration, with episodes of regression; and a shift in teacher identity from knowledge dispenser to co-learner and cultural mediator. GASING worked for this educator as an epistemological orientation and not only as a teaching technique. As a single-case account, its implications for teacher professional development are hypotheses to be tested, not standards.
Guided by the dual-shaping theory of institutions and culture, this comparative study examines the construction of professional identity among early childhood teachers in China and New Zealand, serving children aged 3–6 years in China and birth to school entry age in New Zealand, revealing how societal structures and cultural tradition’s mediate identity formation. Findings demonstrate divergent trajectories: Chinese teachers exhibit a “society-oriented” identity, emphasizing moral responsibility and collective values under Confucian cultural norms and centralized governance, which fosters an “implementer” orientation. In contrast, New Zealand teachers embody “professional autonomy,” rooted in individualistic cultural values and decentralized institutional systems that reinforce reflective practitioner roles. These differences underscore teacher identity as an outcome of institutional regulations and cultural values in interplay: China’s collectivism shapes an externally derived identity, while New Zealand’s autonomy-supportive structures and child-centered culture cultivate an internally driven identity. The study suggests that China’s early childhood teacher development could balance cultural heritage with institutional empowerment to expand professional agency, facilitating identity transformation. This cross-contextual comparison advances theoretical perspectives on the cultural adaptability of teacher professionalism.
