Hüsnü Alp Balaban; Derya Girgin Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1923021

Introduction Differentiated instruction (DI) requires teachers to interpret learner diversity and make adaptive pedagogical decisions within the opportunities and constraints of their professional contexts. This study examined how secondary school English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and teacher educators in Türkiye understood and experienced DI, with particular attention to teacher beliefs, perceived professional agency, and motivational considerations. Methods This qualitative interpretive phenomenological study involved semi-structured interviews with 14 EFL teachers and six teacher educators. Data were analyzed through an inductive, interpretive form of thematic analysis informed by Braun and Clarke’s six-phase procedure. Results Both participant groups understood DI as an inclusive and ethically responsive approach addressing differences in learner readiness, interests, language proficiency, learning pace, and support needs. Teachers associated DI with stronger student engagement, motivation, participation, and language development, but reported a persistent mismatch between their pedagogical intentions and their capacity to act on them. Large classes, limited planning time, curriculum rigidity, resource inequalities, and examination pressures constrained adaptive decision-making and weakened perceived professional agency. Teacher educators similarly identified a gap between pre-service teachers’ conceptual knowledge and their ability to respond flexibly to learner diversity in authentic classrooms. Discussion The findings conceptualize DI as a contextually negotiated practice shaped by the interaction of teacher beliefs, professional agency, motivational commitment, teacher preparation, and institutional conditions. The study highlights the need for practice-based teacher education, sustained professional learning, and organizational environments that enable psychologically responsive and inclusive EFL instruction.

Mitigating the Effects of Large Class Sizes for Improved Teaching and Learning in Ghanaian Senior High Schools

Karim Abu; Frederick Ngmenkpieo Education Journal, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 5, pp. 220-232 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.edu.20261505.14

Large class sizes pose significant challenges to the quality of teaching and learning, although previous studies have examined the effects of large class sizes on teaching and learning outcomes, relatively few studies have been given to the pedagogical strategies that can mitigate these challenges and enhance educational quality. This study therefore investigated the effects of large class sizes on the quality of teaching and learning and explored pedagogical strategies that can be employed to improve instructional effectiveness in such contexts. Two research questions were formulated to guide the study:(1) What are the challenges faced by teachers in handling large class sizes and their effects? (2) What pedagogies could be employed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in large classes? A qualitative research method was employed, and a purposive sampling approach was used to arrive at 38 respondents. Primary data were gathered through focus group discussions and personal interviews. The findings highlighted significant issues faced by teachers, such as difficulties in providing individualised attention, proper assessments, several assignments, timely feedback, and good classroom control and management. These challenges hinder academic progress and contribute to poor student performance. To address these issues and enhance the quality of teaching and learning, the findings further revealed several strategies, including peer teaching and marking, group studies, collaborative teaching, field trips, and the use of projectors. The study also emphasises the importance of professional development training programs for in-service teachers to improve their teaching methodologies and confidence in managing large classes. The study concludes that these methods reduce teacher workload and improve the overall learning experience. The study recommends that the Ghana Education Service should encourage teachers to employ these teaching strategies in large classes to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

Formative Feedback in a Resource-Constrained Ethiopian Primary School: Teacher Practice, Student Engagement, and Context

Seboka Geleta Tonkolu International Journal of Elementary Education, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 2, pp. 34-42 https://doi.org/10.11648/j.ijeedu.20261502.12

Formative feedback is central to assessment for learning because it can help learners understand expectations, identify gaps in understanding, and improve subsequent learning. However, less is known about how formative feedback is understood and enacted in resource-constrained primary-school contexts. This study explored how Ethiopian primary-school teachers understand and enact formative feedback and how teacher, student, and contextual conditions shape feedback practices. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), the study employed a qualitative instrumental case-study design at a government primary school in Asella, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five teachers and the school principal, classroom observations, and a focus group discussion involving five students and three Parent–Teacher Association representatives. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, with SCT applied as an interpretive lens. Four themes emerged: teachers’ understanding and enactment of feedback; feedback, student engagement, and learning experiences; contextual conditions supporting feedback; and challenges and tensions affecting implementation. Teachers generally understood feedback as supporting learning, motivation, confidence, and participation. However, observations revealed a gap between formative intentions and enacted practices, with whole-class oral correction more common than sustained dialogue, individualized feedback, and opportunities for revision. Large classes, limited instructional time, assessment pressures, resource constraints, and differences in student engagement shaped implementation. The findings indicate that strengthening formative feedback requires teacher and student feedback literacy, relevant professional learning, and school conditions that enable dialogue, reflection, and revision.
