Khantaqwa Amri; Ines Heidiani Ikasari Impression., 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 2, pp. 445-461 https://doi.org/10.59086/jti.v5i2.2116

Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) is an application of computer vision and artificial intelligence that enables a system to automatically recognize facial expressions. This study aims to design and implement a real-time system for recognizing seven emotion categories based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using a webcam. The dataset consists of seven classes: angry, disgust, fear, happy, neutral, sad, and surprise. Images are processed in grayscale format with a size of 48 × 48 pixels and augmented using ImageDataGenerator. The CNN model is built with convolutional layers, ReLU, Max Pooling, Dropout, Flatten, a fully connected layer, and Softmax, using the Adam optimizer, a batch size of 64, and 50 epochs. Evaluation was based on training accuracy, validation accuracy, training loss, and validation loss. The results show that the model achieved a training accuracy of 95.10% and a validation accuracy of 93.40%, with a training loss of 0.19 and a validation loss of 0.27 at the 50th epoch. The implementation of OpenCV and the Haar Cascade enables real-time face detection and emotion classification via a webcam. Black Box Testing confirmed that all the application’s main functions operate as designed. This study contributes to the field by integrating CNNs with webcams; however, testing on independent datasets as well as measurements of FPS and latency are required in future research.

Measuring Successful Cooperation in Human-AI Teamwork: Development and Validation of the Perceived Cooperativity and Teaming Perception Scales

Christiane Attig; Christiane B. Wiebel-Herboth; Patricia Wollstadt; Tim Schrills; Mourad Zoubir; Thomas Franke International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, pp. 1-32 https://doi.org/10.1080/10447318.2026.2739657

As human–AI cooperation becomes increasingly prevalent, reliable instruments for assessing the subjective quality of cooperative human–AI interaction are needed. We introduce two theoretically grounded scales: the Perceived Cooperativity Scale (PCS), grounded in joint activity theory, and the Teaming Perception Scale (TPS), grounded in evolutionary cooperation theory. The PCS captures an agent’s perceived cooperative capability and practice within a single interaction sequence; the TPS captures the emergent sense of teaming arising from mutual contribution and support. Both scales were adapted for human–human cooperation to enable cross-agent comparisons. Across three studies (complete N=409) encompassing a cooperative card game (N1=94), LLM interaction (N2=182), and a decision-support system (N3=133), analyses of dimensionality, reliability, and validity indicated that both scales successfully differentiated between cooperation partners of varying cooperative quality and showed construct validity in line with expectations. The scales provide a basis for empirical investigation and system evaluation across a wide range of human–AI cooperation contexts.

The Reflection Penalty: when managers accept leadership coaching from a human but not an AI agent

Tessa Forshaw; Jacob Hale; Mari Longmire Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, pp. 1-26 https://doi.org/10.1080/07370024.2026.2744236

Leadership coaching develops managers but is expensive and difficult to scale. AI may be able to help scale access, but “answering machine” like AI coaching agents invite cognitive offloading and weaken learning. We instantiated a human coaching protocol, supported across prior cycles, as a text-based AI coach built to prompt reflective questioning. In the fourth cycle of a design-based research program at a global consulting firm, eight managers received the same protocol from a human coach and the AI coach, applied each session in an observed onboarding activity, and reflected on both in interviews. All eight welcomed the probing questions and preferred the human coach. Notably, they resisted the same protocol of questioning from the AI coach and wanted answers from it instead. This study’s theoretical contribution is the Reflection Penalty, the cost an AI coach pays for asking a user to do the reflective work that makes human coaching effective. Its practical contribution is a jobs-to-be-done map for AI coaching, assembled from proposals participants raised on their own. It divides coaching into distinct jobs and assigns each to the human or the AI best suited to it. Both contributions are offered to those designing AI tools that aim to support reflection

Large language models for digital mental health: an HCI-centered scoping review

Min Zeng; Zaifu Zhan; Kai Yu; Chao Zeng; Duzhen Zhang; Shuang Zhou; … npj Digital Medicine, 2026 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41746-026-03317-7

Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly reshaping digital mental health, yet how these systems are designed, used, and evaluated remains poorly characterized. We conducted an HCI-centered scoping review of 84 studies examining mental health tasks, stakeholders, interaction paradigms, foundation models, evaluation methods, and outcome measurement. Counseling and support and self-help and well-being accounted for 73.8% of studies, while clinician support and crisis and risk support remained uncommon. Mixed-methods user studies predominated (42.9%), with only three randomized controlled trials and eight studies classified as longitudinal or field evaluations. Technical and response performance was assessed in 81.0% of studies, compared with 29.8% assessing mental health symptoms and clinical outcomes and 7.1% including longitudinal follow-up. Outcome profiles differed across intended tasks. Building on these findings and established evaluation guidance, we propose a task-oriented framework aligning evaluation domains, measurement approaches, and assessment timing with intended use.

Driver Responses to Mismatches Between Expected and Experienced Automated Vehicle Driving Styles

M. J. Lee; Brandon J. Pitts International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, pp. 1-25 https://doi.org/10.1080/10447318.2026.2739750

Automated vehicles (AV) can exhibit diverse driving behaviors that deviate from driver expectations. More research is needed to understand drivers’ preferred driving styles when navigating safety-critical situations as well as their responses to unexpected AV driving behaviors. Forty-eight participants experienced simulated automated driving scenarios where an AV navigated a construction zone while exhibiting four different predefined driving styles that varied in terms of cautiousness and efficiency. After each trial, participants provided feedback to adjust the AV’s driving style toward their preferences, which was successfully implemented in 80% cases. Drivers’ trust, workload, voluntary takeover decisions, eye movements, and skin conductance were measured. Overall, participants preferred driving styles balancing cautiousness and efficiency. When AV behavior matched driver preferences, they reported higher trust and more stable visual scanning patterns, while unexpected behaviors were associated with broader ocular scanning. Findings can inform the development of adaptive systems that intelligently modify AV behaviors.

Context-Aware DCNN for Emotion Recognition in Images

Fatiha Limami; Boutaina Hdioud; Rachid Oulad Haj Thami International Journal of Information Science and Technology, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.57675/imist.prsm/ijist-v10i1.382

Research on emotional recognition from images is advancing across computer vision, psychology, and neuroscience. Even though computer vision has come a long way, emotion detection still faces many challenges. For example, facial-centric models trained on small datasets don't always get the right results, and there aren't enough image collections that show emotions in the right context to show how complicated they really are. This work proposes an innovative approach for contextual emotional detection by integrating bodily sensations with environmental data. We created LEMOTIC, a large, diverse dataset that covers a 116,034 images; wide range of emotional situations. We constructed our methodology utilising a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) architecture. To better understand emotions in context, we connect 26 different emotional categories to three continuous emotional dimensions: valence, arousal, and dominance. After extensive hyperparameter tuning, our model demonstrated accurate emotion recognition from full-body postures and ambient data. Our Sentiment Recognition Model surpasses earlier techniques in both accuracy and generalisation for continuous and discrete emotional variables. Our study reveals that somatic and contextual emotions are particularly important when examining emotions in images. Our method improves context-aware emotion recognition by using deep learning and a carefully chosen dataset. This makes it easier to use in social robotics, affective computing, and human-computer interaction.

OQ-FERNet: An occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network for real-time human-computer interaction

Lianfei Gao; Junfeng Tan; Jiahao Zhang PLoS ONE, 2026, Vol. 21, Issue 10, pp. e0359554 https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0359554

Facial expression recognition is an important task in real-time human-computer interaction, but its practical application is still limited by partial facial occlusion, high computational cost, and the lack of fine-grained emotion representation. To address these issues, this paper proposes OQ-FERNet, an occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network. The proposed network adopts MobileNetV4-Conv-S as a lightweight facial expression feature extraction backbone to obtain compact and discriminative representations with low computational cost. On this basis, an Occlusion-aware Regional Reweighting module is designed to divide the feature map into upper-face, middle-face, and lower-face regions, and adaptively adjust their contributions according to regional reliability. This design suppresses occluded or less informative facial areas while enhancing visible expression-related cues. Furthermore, a Quantitative Emotion Prediction Head is introduced to jointly perform discrete expression classification and emotion intensity estimation, enabling the model to provide both categorical and fine-grained affective outputs. Experiments are conducted on RAF-DB and AffectNet-7. The results show that OQ-FERNet achieves competitive classification performance, improved robustness under different occlusion conditions, and effective quantitative emotion prediction. Specifically, OQ-FERNet obtains 93.12% accuracy on RAF-DB and 68.32% accuracy on AffectNet-7, while achieving an MAE of 0.246, an MSE of 0.101, and an RMSE of 0.318 for quantitative emotion prediction on AffectNet-7. In addition, the model contains only 4.18M parameters and 0.26G FLOPs, with an inference speed of 356 FPS. These results indicate that OQ-FERNet provides an effective and efficient solution for lightweight, occlusion-robust, and fine-grained facial expression recognition in real-time human-computer interaction scenarios.

Act2Intention: A Benchmark For Developing Active Mobile Agents Through Inferring User Intention from GUI Actions

Xiaokai Yan; Jingtao Ding; Yong Li; Zhiwen Yu Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive Mobile Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 3, pp. 1-34 https://doi.org/10.1145/3831658

Mobile GUI Agents powered by multimodal large language models (MLLMs) show promise in human-computer intelligence. However, current research primarily focuses on reactive task execution while lacking a comprehensive “understanding-prediction-execution” process for user intentions, which are the core requirements of active agents. In this paper, we propose the Act2Intention framework that builds an active mobile agent by integrating understanding, predicting user intentions, and executing decisions. Firstly, we constructed the Act2Intention Bench through collection and validated generation, comprising 72,511 intentions and over 700,000 actions across 52 apps, thereby establishing the first benchmark for evaluating proactive agents via continuous “intention-actions” trajectories. We further develop the Act2Intention Agent, achieving proactive services through Proactive-oriented Intention Understanding, Personalized Proactive Intention Prediction, and Experience-guided Intention Execution. Experimental results show that supervised fine-tuning on Act2Intention Bench yields absolute improvements of +32.0 Acc-S, +10.25 Acc-S, and +6.9 SSR points over non-fine-tuned counterparts under the same agent framework for intention understanding, prediction, and execution, respectively. This success underscores the necessity and value of the Act2Intention Bench, which establishes a standardized platform for developing and evaluating proactive agents and consequently paves the way for research on intention-driven human-computer interaction. To facilitate further research, we open-source our code and Act2Intention Bench at: npuNancy/Act2Intention.

PhysioGraph transformer a multimodal physiological emotion recognition personality aware dynamic graph transformer

T. L. Deepika Roy; N. Srinivasu Discover Computing, 2026, Vol. 29, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10791-026-10365-w

The key to affective computing is emotion recognition based on multimodal physiological and behavioral responses and aids in intelligent systems to monitor mental health, adapt human-computer interaction, and predict the intent of affectivity. Although the existing deep models show remarkable advances, most of them process modalities in isolation and do not consider causal, temporal, and individual specific mechanisms underlying the expression of emotions. This paper presents PhysioGraph-Transformer which is a dynamic interaction-aware graph-based Transformer that encapsulates time-varying directed interactions among multimodal physiological channels with personality-sensitive adaptation. All the modalities of the AFFEC dataset, such as EEG, electrodermal activity (EDA), facial dynamics, eye gaze, pupil response, and cursor motion, are modeled as a time-varying interaction graph, which is learned with self-attention. A layer of Neural Ordinary Differential Equation (Neural-ODE) trains continuously changing latent embeddings to be able to smoothly model changes of emotion. Personality-conditioned cross-modes attention incorporates heterogeneous information into a common affective portrayal, making it give a meaningful and individual inference. Experimental analyses on the AFFEC indicate that PhysioGraph-Transformer achieves 84.6% accuracy and 80.8% macro-F1 which outperforms CNN, RNN, GCN and Transformer baselines and has strong resiliency to partial modality loss. The attention interaction maps illustrate distinguishable relationships between personality factors and modality inputs that offer neuroscientific information on the formation of emotions. These results make PhysioGraph-Transformer a interaction-aware, decipherable and personality conscious model of multi-modal physiological emotion recognition.

PAPEL: A Collaborative System for Parental Guidance during Preschool Play-Based English Learning

Xutong Wang; Yu Mei; Qinwei Li; Muyu Liu; Xiwen Yao; Chang Liu; … Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-38 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816983

Play-based parent-child interaction offers preschoolers rich opportunities for everyday foreign language learning, yet many parents struggle to turn open-ended play into effective English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learning experiences at home. To explore how AI might support this process, we conducted formative studies through interviews and a Wizard-of-Oz study. We identified four key challenges: content selection, language expression, balancing instruction and play, and problem solving. To address these challenges, we present PAPEL, a parent–AI collaborative system that grounds suggestions in the ongoing play scene and organizes support into four core modules: content generation, language adaptation, balance assessment, and extended response. In a counterbalanced within-subjects study with 16 parent–child dyads, PAPEL was associated with more integrated parent utterances that combined playful and instructional content, as well as more parent–child conversational turns, than the lightweight chatbot baseline used in our study.

Investigating LLM-Powered Dissenting Minority Support in Power-Imbalanced Group Decision-Making: Counterargument and Mediation as Intervention Strategies

Soohwan Lee; Seoyeong Hwang; Mingyu Kim; D. S. Kim; Kyungho Lee Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-40 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816954

Minority viewpoints are often suppressed in power-imbalanced group decision-making due to social pressure to comply with the majority. To address this problem, we developed an LLM-powered dissenting minority support system that aimed to foster attention to minority views through either AI-generated counterarguments or AI-mediated messages. We conducted a mixed-method experiment with 96 participants in 24 groups, comparing minority members’ experiences across baseline, AI-counterargument, and AI-mediated message conditions. Our findings revealed a nuanced trade-off: AI-generated counterarguments fostered a more flexible atmosphere and enhanced satisfaction, while AI-mediated messaging increased minority participation but unexpectedly reduced their psychological safety. This research contributes empirical evidence on how different AI implementations affect group dynamics, identifies a critical support paradox between participation and psychological safety, provides design implications for future systems, and highlights ethical challenges in implementing AI-mediated communication in hierarchical settings. These insights advance understanding of designing more equitable AI support for power-imbalanced group decision-making.

Enabling Sensitive Conversations with Consent Boundaries: Moa, a Platform for Discussing PhD Advising Relationships

Jane Im; Kentaro Toyama Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-35 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816927

When an individual is harmed by someone in power, such as a workplace manager, it can help to identify allies—people who would offer advice or supportive action. However, ally discovery is fraught because the very people who might be most relevant—e.g., someone who reports to the same manager—might not be sympathetic and could exacerbate the harm. We examine this problem in the context of PhD students navigating advising challenges and present a social media platform called “Moa” that brings together a number of features for facilitating ally discovery. Moa’s most novel element is an audience selection process that uses what we call consent boundaries , which allow users to flexibly define each post or comment’s audience based on factors such as common social identity or lived experience, all while preserving mutual anonymity. A 3-week field study with 47 real-world users showed that Moa’s features in combination facilitated sensitive conversations about advising, with 7 out of 31 posters (22.6%) using consent boundaries. We discuss both our overall “recipe” for systems for ally discovery and the benefits of a consent-centered approach to design.

Journeys of Parents with LGBTQ+ Children: How Trauma and Healing Reshape Identity and (Mis)Informating Practices

Soonho Kwon; Dong Whi Yoo; Koustuv Saha; Shaowen Bardzell; Younah Kang Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-31 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816958

This study examines how parents of LGBTQ+ individuals in South Korea navigate the emotional rupture fueled by fear, isolation, and disorientation after learning their children’s queer identity, encounter queer-related (mis)information as a way of coping with this emotional toll, and come to listen to queer realities relationally. Through this process, we highlight how parents reconstruct their identities as supportive parents, which reshapes their informating practices, making them more critical in assessing queer-related (mis)information, developing strategies to protect themselves from harmful narratives, and actively challenging misinformation to support others navigating similar experiences. This work contributes to CSCW by (1) foregrounding parents of LGBTQ+ individuals, an underrepresented yet critical stakeholder group in Queer HCI; (2) demonstrating how identity reconfiguration following a trauma-healing process could transform informating practices; and (3) arguing that addressing misinformation requires attention beyond individual fact-based discerning to account for its relational, cultural, and emotional dimensions. Further, we invite CSCW scholars to reconsider the balance between abstracting and humanizing information, explore future design possibilities for parents of LGBTQ+ children, and reflect on the role of researchers as participants in collective research communities fueled by care.

"Is This Really a Human Peer Supporter?": Misalignments Between Peer Supporters and Experts in LLM-Supported Interactions

Kellie Yu Hui Sim; Roy Ka-Wei Lee; Kenny Tsu Wei Choo Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-52 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816956

Mental health is a growing global concern, prompting interest in AI-driven solutions to expand access to psychosocial support. Peer support , grounded in lived experience, offers a valuable complement to professional care. However, variability in training, effectiveness, and definitions raises concerns about quality, consistency, and safety. Large Language Models (LLMs) present new opportunities to enhance peer support interactions, particularly in real-time, text-based interactions. We present and evaluate an AI-supported system with an LLM-simulated distressed client ( SimClient ), context-sensitive LLM-generated suggestions ( Suggestions ), and real-time emotion visualisations. 2 mixed-methods studies with 12 peer supporters and 6 mental health professionals (i.e., experts) examined the system’s effectiveness and implications for practice. Both groups recognised its potential to enhance training and improve interaction quality. However, we found a key tension emerged: while peer supporters engaged meaningfully, experts consistently flagged critical issues in peer supporter responses, such as missed distress cues and premature advice-giving. This misalignment highlights potential limitations in current peer support training, especially in emotionally charged contexts where safety and fidelity to best practices are essential. Our findings underscore the need for standardised, psychologically grounded training, especially as peer support scales globally. They also demonstrate how LLM-supported systems can scaffold this development–if designed with care and guided by expert oversight. This work contributes to emerging conversations on responsible AI integration in mental health and the evolving role of LLMs in augmenting peer-delivered care.

Bringing Everyone to the Table: An Experimental Study of LLM-Facilitated Group Decision Making

Mohammed Alsobay; David M. Rothschild; Jake M. Hofman; Daniel G. Goldstein Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 2026, Vol. 10, Issue 6, pp. 1-36 https://doi.org/10.1145/3816907

Group decision-making often suffers from uneven information sharing, hindering decision quality. While large language models (LLMs) have been widely studied as aids for individuals, their potential to support groups of users, potentially as facilitators, is relatively underexplored. We present a pre-registered randomized experiment with 1,475 participants assigned to 281 live groups completing a hidden profile task—selecting an optimal city for a hypothetical sporting event—under one of four facilitation conditions: no facilitation, a one-time message prompting information sharing, a human facilitator, or an LLM (GPT-4o) facilitator. We find that LLM facilitation increased information shared within a discussion by raising the minimum level of engagement with the task among group members, and that these gains came at limited cost in terms of participants’ attitudes towards the task, their group, or their facilitator. Whether by human or AI, there was no significant effect of facilitation on the final decision outcome, suggesting that even substantial but partial increases in information sharing were insufficient to overcome the hidden profile effect studied. To support the design and evaluation of LLM-mediated group decision-making systems, we release our data and our experimental platform, the Group-AI Interaction Laboratory (GRAIL), as an open-source tool.

The effect of different observation modalities in motor imagery: Immersive virtual reality produces stronger desynchronization than video and real-world presentations

OBJECTIVE: The combination of action observation and motor imagery (AO+MI) has emerged as a promising neurorehabilitation strategy to promote sensorimotor plasticity without real movement, making it particularly valuable for individuals whose motor capacity is limited or absent. Improving AO+MI protocols requires understanding whether different observation stimuli engage the sensorimotor system to varying degrees, as the quality of cortical activation during each training trial may directly influence cumulative neuroplastic outcomes. The present study aimed to determine how the observation modality influences the activation of the sensorimotor cortex during synchronous AO+MI. APPROACH: Here, we investigated the effects of three observation modalities: immersive virtual reality (iVR), two-dimensional video and real-world observation of a robotic agent, on sensorimotor cortical engagement, using Event-Related Desynchronization (ERD) as a neurophysiological marker. Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals were recorded from fifteen healthy participants across three sessions, one per modality, while they observed a humanoid robot performing arm elevation movements and simultaneously engaged in motor imagery of the same movements. ERD was computed for alpha and beta frequency bands over eight electrodes covering frontocentral, central, and centroparietal regions. MAIN RESULTS: Statistical analyses revealed significant modality-dependent differences in sensorimotor cortical engagement across multiple frequency bands, electrode locations, and movement types. Immersive virtual reality consistently elicited the strongest desynchronization, with robust effects in the beta band over frontocentral and right centroparietal regions, and in the alpha band over the right central motor cortex. SIGNIFICANCE: These results demonstrate that the modality of action observation significantly shapes sensorimotor cortical engagement during AO+MI. Our findings also support the integration of immersive virtual reality as a neurophysiological grounded tool for optimizing AO+MI-based neurorehabilitation protocols and brain-computer interface applications.
