Introduction Interventions that dyadically equip families with self-compassion skills represent a promising approach for addressing mental health challenges, particularly during the key transitional period of middle childhood. This study examines changes and candidate processes associated with participation in the Mindfulness and Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (MSC-CC) course. Methods Twenty-three caregiver-child dyads (Child, M age =8.78; Caregiver, M age =41.2) participated in MSC-CC, delivered remotely over six weekly group sessions. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included self-report measures of parenting and relational closeness outcomes during a dyadic stressor task (behavior, reflective functioning[RF], and physiology). Analyses investigated pre-post change in primary outcomes and linear mixed-effects models estimated time-related changes and baseline moderators of physiological change. Significance tests identify pre-post increases in parenting and emotion-supportive beliefs. Results and Discussion Physiologically, we detected significant decreases in child physiological arousal. Exploratory moderation analyses suggest, among others, low levels of mindfulness and high RF at baseline predict the largest reductions in child stress physiology. While uncontrolled, the MSC-CC participation was associated with increases in mindful parenting and the caregiver-child relationship and lower child physiological arousal during a dyadic challenge, most prominently in families with lower emotion-supportive beliefs at baseline. Altogether, this highlights candidate processes and moderators of efficacy to be confirmed in a fully powered randomized controlled trial. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov , Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (SCCC) , NCT05818397, registration and study start on 2023-10-16.

ثبت کارآزمایی: ClinicalTrials.gov، Self-Compassion for Children and Caregivers (SCCC)، NCT05818397، ثبت و آغاز مطالعه در ۲۰۲۳-۱۰-۱۶.

Abstract Process‐oriented approaches are needed to understand the temporality and dynamics of teacher–student interactions in higher education classrooms. In this study, we follow a complexity science approach, based on non‐linear intra‐ and inter‐personal physiology methods, to explore the physiology of teacher–student interactions. In particular, we examine the relationship between higher education students' course interest, electrodermal activity (EDA, as an indicator of physiological arousal), perceived teacher enthusiasm in the classroom and lesson enjoyment. Ten higher education teachers and 42 of their students voluntarily participated in this study. Self‐reported measures were applied to assess students' course interest (pre), perceived teacher enthusiasm (post) and lesson enjoyment (post) in authentic higher education lectures. Teachers' and students' EDA was sampled at 2 kHz using Bionomadix mobile sensors during the lectures. Auto‐ and cross‐recurrence quantification analyses were applied to understand the temporal structures of students' individual EDA patterns and their physiological synchrony with their teachers. At the individual level, entropy of students' EDA predicted their perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment beyond course interest. At the physiological synchrony level, course interest was the only predictor of students' perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. Moreover, our findings showed that the relationships between course interest and the structure of EDA patterns differ between individual and physiological synchrony levels. These results provide valuable insight into understanding interactions between teachers and students from a complexity science perspective. Practitioner notes What is already known about this topic? Control value theory (CVT) defines academic emotions in terms of the two dimensions of valence (positive or negative) and arousal (activating or deactivating). Enjoyment is considered a positive activating emotion that is central to effective teaching and learning. Emotions in the classroom are dynamically co‐constructed through social interactions among teachers and students. While valence is inherently subjective, objective physiological measures like electrodermal activity (EDA) are increasingly utilised to understand the arousal dimension of emotions and the dynamics of emotional contagion between teachers and students. What this paper adds? Observing EDA of higher education students during authentic lectures can provide valuable insights into their perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. Exploring the temporal structures of EDA through nonlinear methods might help understand the emergence of students' lesson enjoyment in a bottom‐up manner. Studying temporal structures of EDA at intra‐ and interpersonal levels (i.e. teacher–student physiological synchrony) can provide a multilayered perspective on the relationship between students' course interest, perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. At the intra‐personal level, students' course interest and their EDA entropy both predict perceived teacher enthusiasm and lesson enjoyment. At the inter‐personal level, teacher–student physiological synchrony occurs above chance level. Furthermore, physiological synchrony is associated with students' course interest. However, it does not predict perceived teacher enthusiasm or lesson enjoyment beyond the influence of course interest. Implications for practice and/or policy Teachers and learning designers can focus on fostering high course interest among learners at the beginning of their courses to facilitate positive relational dynamics with the students. Moving educational research towards non‐linear approaches can provide more nuanced insights into how students' and teachers' emotions evolve in higher education classrooms.

Exploring Sources and Dimensions of Self-Efficacy among Early Childhood Education Student Teachers

Henri Heiskanen; Harri Pitkäniemi Journal of Early Childhood Education Research, 2026, Vol. 15, Issue 4, pp. 1-28 https://doi.org/10.58955/jecer.176258

This study examined the relationship between sources of self-efficacy and three dimensions of self-efficacy among early childhood education student teachers. Data from 155 participants were analyzed using structural equation modelling and multigroup analyses. Seven sources of self-efficacy, including Mastery Experiences, Vicarious Experiences, Social Persuasion, Physiological Arousal and Knowledge Capabilities, and three dimensions of perceived self-efficacy (pedagogical strategies, learning environment management, and children’s participation) were investigated. Knowledge Capabilities were included as a source based on the premise that pedagogical and content knowledge enable informed instructional decisions, reinforcing self-efficacy. Results showed that Mastery Experiences were the strongest and most consistent predictor across all dimensions. Vicarious Experiences had a moderate positive effect on pedagogical strategies and learning environment management, while Knowledge Capabilities moderately predicted children’s participation. Multigroup analyses revealed that explanatory power was higher among students with work experience and varied across age groups: younger students benefited more in learning environment management and children’s participation, while older students benefited more in pedagogical strategies. These findings highlight the need for individualized approaches in teacher education. Emphasizing mastery experiences and peer learning opportunities is essential. The results can inform targeted pedagogical strategies and support tailored to age and experience that strengthen self-efficacy development and better prepare students for professional demands.
