Academic motivation and basic psychological needs among university students in physical education and mountain sports: a self-determination theory study

Ştefan Alecu; Gheorghe Adrian Onea Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1983915 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1983915

Academic motivation in physically demanding university programmes may be better understood by considering motivational quality rather than motivation quantity alone. This cross-sectional observational survey supplemented by structured content analysis examined relationships among basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration, autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, amotivation, continuation intention, and career commitment in first- and second-year students enrolled in Physical Education and Mountain Sports at Transilvania University of Brașov. Data were collected from 6 to 30 October 2025 after ethics approval, yielding a final analytical sample of 237 students. Participants completed the Academic Motivation Scale-College/University version, the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, contextual and sport-related items, continuation and career indicators, and two open-ended prompts. Original open-ended answers were standardized into 50 motivation and 50 demotivation formulations and independently coded by both authors. Autonomous motivation averaged 5.04 (SD = 1.05), amotivation 2.40 (SD = 0.95), overall need satisfaction 3.72 (SD = 0.73), and overall need frustration 2.21 (SD = 0.76). Need satisfaction correlated strongly with autonomous motivation (Spearman ρ = 0.704), whereas need frustration correlated strongly with amotivation (ρ = 0.661). In adjusted models, need satisfaction was positively associated with autonomous motivation (β = 0.539, p < 0.001), and need frustration was positively associated with amotivation (β = 0.569, p < 0.001). Human coding agreement was high for motivation (92.0%, κ = 0.898) and demotivation (94.0%, κ = 0.927). Teaching/prosocial impact was the most frequent motivation category (33.8%), while curriculum/teaching/assessment was the most frequent demotivation category (23.6%). Overall, self-reported need satisfaction and frustration were differentially associated with motivational quality in this cohort, but the cross-sectional, single-faculty design precludes causal or population-level conclusions.

Exercise motivation is stable yet mobile: a three-wave latent transition study of psychological-need predictors and subsequent exercise

Chenhui Zhu; Qingyang Huang; Weikun Liu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17, pp. 1967142 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1967142

Background Most person-centered research on exercise motivation has identified static profiles, leaving unclear how motivational configurations change over time, what psychological experiences are associated with those changes, and whether transitions predict subsequent exercise. This study examined the short-term mobility of exercise-regulation profiles, psychological-need predictors of specific transitions, and their prospective associations with later leisure-time exercise. Methods A three-wave prospective study followed 1,780 students from six Chinese colleges at approximately 4-week intervals. Exercise regulation, exercise-specific psychological need satisfaction and frustration, and leisure-time exercise were assessed at each wave. Continuous-indicator latent transition analysis identified longitudinal motivational profiles and transition probabilities. Posterior-probability-weighted models examined origin-wave need satisfaction and frustration as predictors of eligible transitions and tested whether first-interval transitions were associated with final-wave exercise after prior exercise was considered. Results Six profiles were retained: amotivated–controlled, low-regulation, mixed intrinsic–controlled, identified-dominant, intrinsic-dominant, and high autonomous–introjected. Overall profile stability was substantial but incomplete, with 76.9 and 73.8% of posterior transition mass remaining on the stability diagonal across the two intervals. The largest off-diagonal transition was from low regulation to high autonomous–introjected motivation (18.0 and 20.1%). After Holm correction, greater need satisfaction was associated with lower odds of moving from intrinsic-dominant or high autonomous–introjected motivation to low regulation (odds ratios = 0.47–0.49), whereas greater need frustration was associated with lower odds of moving from low regulation to identified- or intrinsic-dominant profiles (odds ratios = 0.41–0.62). In models controlling baseline exercise, movement from amotivated–controlled or low regulation to high autonomous–introjected motivation was associated with greater subsequent exercise, whereas several transitions toward less internalized configurations were associated with lower exercise. After additional adjustment for exercise measured at the transition endpoint, only the low-regulation-to-high autonomous–introjected transition remained significant. Conclusion Exercise motivation was substantially stable yet meaningfully mobile over short periods. Psychological-need experiences were associated with specific, origin-dependent motivational transitions, and selected transitions prospectively differentiated later exercise behavior. The findings support a dynamic and state-dependent view of exercise motivation and suggest that the psychological conditions relevant to maintaining internalized motivation may differ from those involved in moving out of low regulation.

Psychometric validation of the Chinese Physical Effort Scale and profiles of physical-effort approach and avoidance among Chinese university students

Yijun Liu; Qiang Zhou Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1959219

Objective Individual differences in tendencies to approach or avoid physical effort may be relevant to exercise-related psychological and behavioral characteristics. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese Physical Effort Scale (PES) and investigated individual differences in physical-effort approach and avoidance tendencies and their associations with exercise-related psychological and behavioral variables among Chinese university students. Methods Participants were 1,273 students from six universities across eastern, central, and western China. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, reliability and validity analyses, and multigroup confirmatory factor analysis were used to evaluate the factor structure, reliability, validity, and measurement invariance of the Chinese PES. Latent profile analysis identified configurations of physical effort approach and avoidance, and BCH analyses compared profiles on emotion regulation, exercise motivation, and physical activity. Results Factor analyses supported a two-factor structure comprising physical effort approach and avoidance. The scale showed high internal consistency and test–retest reliability, with evidence supporting convergent and discriminant validity and metric and scalar invariance across gender and academic year. Three profiles were identified: Balanced (59.07%), Avoidance-Oriented (14.93%), and Approach-Oriented (26.00%). The Approach-Oriented profile showed higher cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, external regulation, introjected regulation, and autonomous regulation, and lower amotivation. It also showed higher total physical activity than the other profiles and higher weekly exercise frequency than the Balanced profile. Conclusion The Chinese PES showed psychometric support among Chinese university students. Distinct configurations of physical effort approach and avoidance were associated with emotion regulation, exercise motivation, and physical activity.

Psychological predictors of sport dropout in adolescents: a latent profile analysis of risk profiles and R3STEP auxiliary regression

Tianzhi Zhan; Lu Liu Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1972994

Understanding why adolescents discontinue organized sport is central to sustaining the physical and mental health benefits of sport participation. Most research has examined psychological correlates of dropout one variable at a time, yet burnout, amotivation, and competitive anxiety may co-occur in meaningful configurations. This study applied a person-centered latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify psychological risk profiles among adolescent athletes and used the R3STEP three-step approach to examine whether dropout status was associated with baseline profile membership over a 12-month follow-up. A total of 864 competitive adolescent athletes (46.5% girls; mean age = 14.6 years, SD = 1.8) from Jiangsu Province, China, completed measures of athlete burnout (emotional/physical exhaustion, reduced sense of accomplishment, sport devaluation), amotivation, and multidimensional competitive anxiety (somatic, worry, concentration disruption). Dropout status was recorded 12 months later. Model selection indices supported a three-profile solution: a low-risk profile (52.8%), characterized by uniformly favorable scores; a moderate-risk profile (33.4%); and a high-risk profile (13.8%), marked by pronounced elevations across all seven indicators. Twelve-month dropout rates rose monotonically across profiles (8.6%, 19.4%, and 35.3%, respectively), χ 2 (2) = 45.87, p < 0.001. In R3STEP analyses controlling for age, sex, and weekly training hours, dropouts were 3.86 times more likely to belong to the high-risk rather than the low-risk profile (OR = 3.86, p < 0.001) and 1.94 times more likely to belong to the moderate-risk profile (OR = 1.94, p < 0.01). Older age and greater weekly training hours were also associated with higher-risk membership. These findings indicate that burnout, amotivation, and anxiety cluster within identifiable subgroups of adolescent athletes, and that membership in a high-risk psychological profile is strongly associated with subsequent sport dropout. These profiles may inform the future development of risk-assessment approaches for retaining adolescent athletes, pending prospective validation of their predictive performance.

Latent profiles of sport participation motivation and their association with campus sports culture among higher vocational college students

Yiyuan Zhang; Ding Wang; Wenting Yan Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1950464

Objective This study identified latent profiles of sport participation motivation among higher vocational college students and examined their associations with campus sports culture. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in 2026 among students from three higher vocational colleges in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces using convenience sampling. Campus sports culture and sport participation motivation were assessed using the Campus Sports Culture Scale and the Chinese version of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-3. Latent profile analysis was performed in Mplus 8.3, followed by chi-square tests and the R3STEP three-step procedure to examine demographic differences and associations between campus sports culture and profile membership while accounting for classification uncertainty. Results Four motivational profiles were identified: the Low-to-Moderate Flat Profile (5.8%), Autonomous Orientation Profile (33.1%), High Controlled–Amotivation Profile (8.4%), and Moderate Mixed-Motivation Profile (52.6%). The Moderate Mixed-Motivation Profile was the largest subgroup. With the Low-to-Moderate Flat Profile as the reference category, higher overall campus sports culture scores were associated with greater odds of membership in the Autonomous Orientation, High Controlled–Amotivation, and Moderate Mixed-Motivation Profiles, with the strongest association observed for the Autonomous Orientation Profile. At the dimensional level, material culture was associated with all three profiles, whereas spiritual and behavioral culture were associated with the Autonomous Orientation and Moderate Mixed-Motivation Profiles. Institutional culture was not significantly associated with profile membership. Conclusion Sport participation motivation among higher vocational college students showed substantial heterogeneity, with mixed motivational regulation being the most common pattern. Campus sports culture was differentially associated with motivational profile membership, particularly with profiles containing stronger autonomous regulation. These findings suggest that accessible sport resources, an active participation climate, and recognition of sport value may be relevant considerations when developing profile-sensitive physical activity programs in higher vocational colleges.
