Background: Young adults' extensive use of smartphones has resulted in several health concerns and one of which is Text Neck Syndrome. Prolonged neck flexion during smartphone use can lead to neck pain, disability and functional limitations. The study focused on determining the prevalence and knowledge regarding Text Neck Syndrome and identify predicting factors associated with the condition. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 240 undergraduate students selected using convenience method of sampling from four colleges in East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. A standardized questionnaire with questions on demographics, participant behaviour and understanding of text neck syndrome was used to gather data. Two standardized tools neck disability index and the smartphone addiction scale-short version were used with prior permission to assess neck disability and smartphone addiction.8,9 Results: The results demonstrated that, prevalence of Text Neck Syndrome among the participants discovered to be 35.8% (95% CI:29.8%–42.3%) and 41.0% participants had smartphone addiction. Majority (71.7%) participants had adequate knowledge regarding Text Neck Syndrome and smartphone addiction was identified as a significant independent predictor of Text Neck Syndrome, with 2.2 times higher odds of developing the condition. Additionally, there was a significant positive correlation found between smartphone addiction and neck disability. Conclusions: Text Neck Syndrome is a prevalent health issue among undergraduate students in Meghalaya, affecting more than one-third of the study population. Although most of the participants had adequate knowledge regarding text neck syndrome, the occurrence of the syndrome suggests the need of targeted educational, ergonomic and behavioural interventions among young adults.

Bijad Saad Alqahtani; Khalid M. Alkhathami; Shajiya Sarwar Moosa; Mohammad Ahsan Frontiers in Psychology, 2026, Vol. 17 https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1823725

Introduction Smartphone addiction, body image concerns, eating disorders, and physical activity are interconnected issues affecting many young people, regardless of gender. This study examines differences in smartphone addiction, body image, eating disorders, and physical activity between male and female participants. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 318 university students (168 males, 150 females) in Saudi Arabia. There average age was of 20.86 ± 3.47 years, a height of 168.24 ± 11.36 cm, and a weight of 65.26 ± 18.32 kg. Data were collected via an online survey using the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV), Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ-19), Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q 6.0) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF). All instruments demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s α > 0.70) in previous validation studies. Statistical analysis employed Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis tests with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results No significant differences were found in smartphones addiction ( z = −0.64, p = 0.52), body image ( z = −0.32, p = 0.75), physical activity ( z = −0.61, p = 54). Whereas a significant difference was found in eating disorder ( z = 2.91, p = 0.004), with female showing higher prevalence (88%) compare to male (76%). Sub-scales revealed significant within-group differences for all variables. Conclusion This study revealed insignificant gender differences for smartphone addiction, body image, and physical activity levels except eating disorders. Future research should employ longitudinal designs and objective measures to clarify causal pathways and gender-specific mechanisms for all related variables.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the antecedents of online game purchase intention. The theoretical background of the research is based on the Flow Experience Theory. In this context, the study examines the relationships between flow experience, online game addiction, smartphone addiction, stickiness, e-WOM, and in-game purchase intention. Data were obtained from 870 participants via an online survey using the convenience sampling technique. To test the hypotheses of the research, PLS-SEM was employed using the SmartPLS software. The results of the study show that flow experience and e-WOM are the variables that directly affect in-game purchase intention. In addition, flow experience was found to have a significant effect on online game addiction, smartphone addiction, and stickiness. Furthermore, the effects of flow experience, online game addiction, smartphone addiction, and stickiness on e-WOM were statistically confirmed. By identifying the determinants of in-game purchase intention, this study makes a theoretical contribution to the literature on consumer (user/player) behavior in digital gaming environments. The findings specifically demonstrate how flow experience, different forms of addiction, stickiness, and e-WOM are associated with in-game purchase intention, thereby advancing scholarly discussions on consumer behavior within the digital gaming context. From a practical standpoint, the results provide guidance for game and application developers, marketing professionals, and managers in designing strategies aimed at enhancing user engagement and purchase-related outcomes. Finally, future research is encouraged to examine the indirect effects of the variables included in this study on in-game purchase intention.

A proposal for including nomophobia in the new DSM-V

Nicola Bragazzi; Giovanni Del Puente Psychology Research and Behavior Management, 2014, Vol. 7, pp. 155 https://doi.org/10.2147/prbm.s41386

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is considered to be the gold standard manual for assessing the psychiatric diseases and is currently in its fourth version (DSM-IV), while a fifth (DSM-V) has just been released in May 2013. The DSM-V Anxiety Work Group has put forward recommendations to modify the criteria for diagnosing specific phobias. In this manuscript, we propose to consider the inclusion of nomophobia in the DSM-V, and we make a comprehensive overview of the existing literature, discussing the clinical relevance of this pathology, its epidemiological features, the available psychometric scales, and the proposed treatment. Even though nomophobia has not been included in the DSM-V, much more attention is paid to the psychopathological effects of the new media, and the interest in this topic will increase in the near future, together with the attention and caution not to hypercodify as pathological normal behaviors.
