Improving Teacher-student Relationships via PBIS: A Study of First-year Teachers

Rene Martinez; Mervyn J. Wighting; Daniel Tubbs Athens Journal of Education, 2026, Vol. 13, Issue 4, pp. 587-606 https://doi.org/10.30958/aje.13-4-1

This mixed-methods study examined whether first-year teachers could improve relationships with students through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Fifty novice teachers implemented one of three PBIS strategies: daily one-on-one conversation, verbal praise, or immediate rewards with 192 selected students over a two-week period. Teacher-student relationships were measured using the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (STRS) before and after the intervention. Results showed significant reductions in conflict (t(191) = 7.14, p < .001, d = 0.98) and moderate increases in closeness (t(191) = –7.11, p < .001, d = 0.67). No significant differences emerged across grade levels, teacher and student gender, or PBIS strategy type. Thematic analysis of teacher reflections highlighted improvements in engagement, cooperation, emotional regulation, and relational trust. Although the study was limited by its two-week duration and reliance on teacher self-reports, the findings demonstrate that even brief PBIS interventions can yield measurable relational benefits. Implications are discussed for teacher preparation programs and school-based practice. Keywords: teacher-student relationships, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), teacher preparation programs, first-year/novice teachers, school climate.

Novice EFL Teachers’ Professional Identities in Reading Instruction: A Case Study

Pei Pei; Norhakimah Khaiessa Ahmad; Abu Bakar Razali World Journal of English Language, 2026, Vol. 17, Issue 1, pp. 445 https://doi.org/10.5430/wjel.v17n1p445

This study investigates how a novice EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher enacts professional identity within the context of reading instruction. While prior research has established the dynamic and multifaceted nature of teacher identity, limited attention has been given to how professional identity is constructed and enacted through subject-specific pedagogical practices, particularly in reading instruction. This qualitative case study draws on interview and classroom observation data to explore how a novice EFL teacher enacts professional identities in reading instruction. The findings suggest that the teacher’s professional identity is not a fixed set of roles but is expressed through situated teaching practices and professional reflections. Specifically, three interrelated identity positions were identified—facilitator of meaning-making, cultural and textual guide, and reflective learner. These positions were reflected in instructional practices such as scaffolding, interpretive questioning, and the provision of cultural and textual background knowledge, as well as in the teacher’s willingness to learn from students and engage in professional development. Furthermore, the findings highlight the relationship between the teacher’s professional identity, individual agency, and the working conditions of her teaching context. By situating teacher identity within the practices of reading instruction, this study extends existing research by foregrounding the practice-based and context-sensitive nature of novice teacher identity. An Activity Theory perspective further informs the interpretation of how professional identity relates to pedagogical practices, instructional tools, and contextual conditions.

“If I Could Go Back…”: Understanding the Education and Career Decisions of Forgivable Loan Recipients in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program

Katie Smith Higher Education Politics & Economics, 2026 https://doi.org/10.32674/bxdjcs81

This narrative case study features the early career experiences and outcomes of eight former pre-service teachers in the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program (NCTFP). The NCTFP is a teacher recruitment program that provides forgivable loans and professional development in exchange for participants’ commitment to teach in high-needs subjects upon graduation. Study participants joined the NCTFP in 2018-19 as postsecondary students in secondary STEM education. Interview and written data were collected in 2019 to understand how and why students chose to participate in the NCTFP and their educational and career goals. Follow up interviews were conducted in 2024 to understand how participants’ educational and career interests and plans remained consistent or deviated over time, especially in the context of NCTFP forgivable loans and service commitments. Three major themes illustrate the ways that educational structures, actual teaching experiences, and the loans themselves shaped participants’ lives, and their plans for the future.

Core practices as anchors for grounding teaching in research on learning and instruction

Matthias Nückles; Hadmut Hipp Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1819272

The concept of core practices has gained increasing prominence in teacher education, yet important conceptual questions remain unresolved. In particular, there is little agreement on what constitutes a core practice, what it means for core practices to be research-based, and how to embed them within broader teacher education curricula. This paper proposes a theoretical framework to answer these questions. Building on the defining features proposed in foundational work on core practices (e.g., Grossman et al., 2009 ), we argue that core practices are instructional activities enacted in social interaction, occupying a medium level of granularity between broad domains of practice and specific teaching behaviors. Elaborating on this conception, we argue that core practices may function psychologically as basic-level categories ( Rosch, 1978 ) which novice teachers developed during their long-time apprenticeship of observation at school. Core practices thus provide ideal anchor points around which teacher education can be organized. Using the core practices of explaining and modeling, we demonstrate how core practices can be grounded in evidence-based instructional principles derived from research on learning and instruction, exemplifying what it means for core practices to be research-based. To address how such research-based core practices can be situated within a broader vision of teacher education, we propose a three-part framework in which (a) core practices serve as anchors for introducing novices to evidence-based principles from research on learning and instruction; (b) core practices are situated within middle-range theories of learning and instruction, enabling novices to decide when and why to enact them and to orchestrate different core practices in ways that promote student learning; and (c) core practices are related to the most fundamental goals of teaching, such as, for example, supporting students’ individual knowledge construction, supporting students’ participation in disciplinary discourse, or supporting students’ identity development, enabling novice teachers to deeply understand the purposes of teaching and reflect on and develop their teaching accordingly. Taken together, conceptualizing core practices as basic-level categories, grounding them in research on learning and instruction, and using them as anchors within broader teacher education curricula provides a foundation for a research-based signature pedagogy for teacher education.
