Track placement, school environments, and achievement gaps: identifying the drivers of the academic track advantage in Italy

Elisa Sbalchiero; Francesco Balzaretti; Emanuele Fedeli; Moris Triventi Large-scale Assessments in Education, 2026, Vol. 14, Issue 1, pp. 58 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40536-026-00329-3

Abstract Educational tracking shapes students’ learning opportunities, yet isolating its effects from prior selection remains a key challenge in large-scale assessment research. This study examines both the size and the mechanisms of academic-track advantages by integrating longitudinal population-level administrative data from INVALSI with school- and student-level indicators from PISA 2018 in Italy. Focusing on lyceums versus technical schools, we exploit rich pre-tracking information on achievement, socio-demographic background, and early attitudes, and apply entropy balancing to adjust for selection into tracks. Results show that achievement gaps at Grade 10 are large across domains, but substantially reduced once differences in prior competencies and backgrounds are accounted for. Nonetheless, a meaningful academic-track advantage persists after balancing. Decomposition analyses indicate that this residual gap is largely explained by differences in school environments, particularly classroom academic and SES composition alongside school climate, while instructional practices and organizational policies or school resources contribute little on average. The findings support a dual interpretation of tracking effects, combining cumulative selection and exposure to differentiated learning contexts, and highlight the value of linking administrative panels with international assessment data to study both outcomes and mechanisms of educational stratification.

A physiology-guided multimodal learning framework for EEG-free driver behavior recognition using peripheral biosignals

Huaqiang Xu; Honghan Li; JJ Zhao Journal of King Saud University - Computer and Information Sciences, 2026, Vol. 38, Issue 9 https://doi.org/10.1007/s44443-026-01338-6

Accurate driver behavior recognition is important for driver monitoring systems and intelligent transportation applications. Although EEG-based approaches can provide useful neural information, their practical use is often limited by sensing complexity, preparation burden, and sensitivity to motion artifacts. This study proposes a physiology-guided multimodal learning framework for EEG-free driver behavior recognition using peripheral biosignals. A publicly available multimodal driving physiology dataset was used, including recordings from 35 participants performing five driving behaviors: smooth driving, acceleration, deceleration, lane change, and turning. Three peripheral physiological signals, namely ECG, EMG, and GSR, were used as model inputs. The proposed framework incorporates physiological knowledge into multimodal representation learning through modality-aware encoders tailored to the distinct characteristics of ECG, EMG, and GSR. A physiology-guided fusion mechanism is further introduced to model complementary cross-modal interactions among the three biosignals. Experimental results showed that the proposed ECG+EMG+GSR model achieved an average accuracy of 0.782 and a macro-F1 score of 0.783 under a five-fold evaluation protocol with separated training, validation, and test sets, with MCC and Cohen’s kappa reaching 0.711 and 0.711, respectively. Compared with EEG-only and full-modality baselines reported in the original dataset study, the proposed framework demonstrated the feasibility of EEG-free driver behavior recognition using only peripheral biosignals. Under the matched ECG+EMG+GSR input setting, the proposed framework outperformed the strongest baseline across all four evaluation metrics. In addition, sensing-configuration analysis showed that ECG+EMG+GSR provided a favorable balance between recognition performance and sensing burden. These results indicate that physiology-guided multimodal learning can effectively exploit heterogeneous peripheral biosignals for accurate and interpretable EEG-free driver behavior recognition.

Teachers’ desired mobility to disadvantaged schools: Do financial incentives matter?

Julien Silhol; Lionel Wilner Economics of Education Review, 2026, Vol. 115, pp. 102839 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.econedurev.2026.102839

This article exploits a 2018 reform of financial incentives for teachers to work in French disadvantaged schools. Based on administrative personnel records from an educational authority, it evaluates the impact of those incentives on stated preferences to move to such schools. This quasi-experimental source of variation of financial incentives, namely a gradual doubling of the annual stipend from €2,300 to €4,600 in these schools, enhanced their attractiveness. The estimated effect on teachers’ desired mobility is substantial and equivalent to a 34-minute reduction per trip. However, this effect is heterogeneous among teachers, notably higher for those with less experience and who already work in such schools.

What is the relationship between short video applications and adolescents' critical thinking disposition? The mediating role of media dependency

Maierweiya Rexiati International Journal of Adolescence and Youth, 2026, Vol. 31, Issue 1 https://doi.org/10.1080/02673843.2026.2736475

Short video applications (SVA) have become increasingly prevalent among adolescents, raising growing concerns about their potential associations with cognitive development. Although research has examined social media, screen time, and addiction, limited empirical attention has been given to how SVA usage behaviour and dependency relate to adolescents’ critical thinking. This study assessed the relationship between SVA and adolescents' critical thinking disposition using a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 442 adolescents aged 15–18 at one high school in Anhui Province, China, and analysed using structural equation modelling to assess the mediation pathways. Findings showed that SVA usage behaviour was positively associated with critical openness through dependency, attitude, and perceived behavioural control. In contrast, opposing direct and indirect pathways on reflective scepticism resulted in a non-significant overall relationship. These findings suggest that greater attention may be given to adolescents’ goal-oriented SVA use rather than simply reducing screen time.
