In an era of CRT bans and university neutrality, democracy demands active civic engagement among college students. Scholars have called for a deliberate approach to political learning in higher education, focusing on how campus environments shape it. However, our understanding of how campus environments influence the political engagement of students of color, particularly during this turbulent political moment, is limited. Therefore, this study examined how a culturally engaging campus environment affects the political learning and engagement of students of color at four Minority Serving or Emerging Institutions. Findings were organized by the servingness typology of producing and serving, as all campuses had high voting rates, a proxy for political engagement, but may not have had high cultural reflection. The themes point to the importance of faculty of color in role modeling how to engage in civil discourse about contentious topics, students’ motivation to become politically engaged through cultural familiarity, and how feelings of disregard by the administration led students at producing campuses to go off campus to learn and engage politically, whereas students at serving institutions engaged with their administration and as part of the student government.
This study investigates how preservice teachers in Hong Kong interpret culturally responsive teaching (CRT) and what conditions might shape their interpretations. The findings indicate preservice teachers’ orientation towards benevolent integrationism in interpreting CRT, featured by a primary focus on linguistic mediation between English and Cantonese and a strong ethos of benevolent interpersonal care by teachers to facilitate ethnic minority students’ integration in mainstream classrooms and society. The underlying values of this orientation resonate with Confucian discourses of care, harmony, benevolence and relationality noted in international research on education in Chinese contexts. However, in reference to the Western-based theorisation of CRT, preservice teachers’ interpretations represent a synthesis of the celebratory and integrationist stances, while the critical, equity-oriented stance remains largely absent. Therefore, we argue that recourse to Confucian discourses in education for ethnic minority students risks obscuring or perpetuating systemic inequalities and discuss how teacher education and institutional efforts might extend the orientation of benevolent integrationism among preservice teachers towards critical engagement with inequality. Overall, the findings demonstrate how global educational paradigms, such as CRT, are interpreted in specific socio-cultural contexts and show how local interpretations and socio-cultural contexts can serve as foundations for a more equitable education for ethnic minorities.
Trichotillomania (TTM) is a body-focused repetitive behavior characterized by compulsive hair-pulling and an association with psychiatric comorbidities and profound emotional distress. Despite its significant impact on well-being, TTM remains understudied, underdiagnosed, and without established treatment guidelines. These deficiencies are particularly evident for ethnic and racial minority groups with TTM, who experience unique factors related to the cultural significance of hair, distinct physical hair properties, stigmas surrounding psychiatric care, and differences in clinical presentation. Additionally, therapies for TTM have been developed primarily from non-Hispanic White samples, potentially contributing to disparities in treatment outcomes. While emerging therapies aim to integrate cultural perspectives, more representative research is needed to address knowledge gaps and develop effective care for TTM across all groups. This review will address differences in the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of TTM in ethnic and racial minority populations, and discuss barriers to management and future directions of equitable care.
Aim Older adults experiencing anxiety disorders, particularly those from minority ethnic backgrounds, are less likely to use formal mental health services than younger adults. This UK-based multicultural qualitative study explored beliefs underpinning coping strategies for anxiety among White British, South Asian, African and Caribbean older adults who self-reported anxiety, informed by Leventhal’s Common-Sense Model. Methods Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 52 older adults aged ≥65 who self-reported current or past anxiety. Professional interpreters supported interviews with non-English-speaking participants (n = 10). Eight public contributors collaborated on different aspects of the study. Data were managed and analysed using the Framework Method. Findings The study drew on the perspectives of 27 participants with distressing anxiety and 25 with non-distressing anxiety. Across all cultural groups, participants adopted a range of coping strategies, with self-help strategies being the most prominent. Our findings suggest that coping strategy selection was shaped by factors extending beyond cultural background. Participants tended to adopt strategies that were congruent with their salient identities, perceived need for support, candidacy for healthcare, social relationships, and beliefs about the appropriateness and effectiveness of different responses. This complexity helps explain variation in perceptions both across and within cultural groups. Inductive analysis identified new dimensions not recognised in Leventhal’s Model: factors underlying the motivation to take action, beliefs about treatment providers and new treatment-related beliefs. Conclusions Interventions that support older adults to apply self-help strategies more effectively may represent acceptable adjuncts to formal therapy. Nevertheless, addressing barriers to formal help-seeking remains essential, particularly among those with perceived need for professional support. No one model can depict the complexity of coping behaviours. While applying Leventhal’s Model offered novel insights, it could not fully capture the motivational factors underlying engagement with specific coping behaviours. Cross-cultural research should attend to within-group heterogeneity rather than impose assumptions of cultural homogeneity.
OBJECTIVE: Prior evidence suggests that people from racial/ethnic minority (REM) groups experience greater psychological distress, especially if they are isolated from their cultural ingroup. This study examined associations between REM status and psychological symptoms measured before and after therapy, as well as interactions with neighbourhood-level REM density. METHOD: Electronic health records from 130,857 patients who accessed psychological interventions in primary care services in England were analyzed. Pre- and post-treatment depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and functional impairment measures (WSAS) were linked to individual-level and neighbourhood-level demographic and socioeconomic data. Multilevel (mixed effect) models were used to examine associations between individual and neighbourhood socioeconomic variables with available measures of psychological distress. RESULTS: Specific (rather than all) REM groups had higher indices of psychological distress, and there was little evidence of a moderating effect of neighbourhood ethnic density in the hypothesized direction. After controlling for socioeconomic variables, consistently higher indices of distress before and after therapy were evident for patients from White-other, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and "Other" backgrounds. CONCLUSIONS: Mental health inequalities are evident for people from specific REM groups.
