ABSTRACT Early childhood represents a unique window for language learning. Previous research has established reliable links between parental speech and the pace of children's language development; however, much less is known about children's naturalistic experiences in early education centers. We utilized longform recordings and the LENA technology to examine the variation in preschool teacher speech and its links to children's productive vocabulary in government‐run early education centers in Slovenia. The sample included 80 children (2.5–4 years, 38 girls) and ~350 h of naturalistic data from 8 classrooms. Children's language environments were shaped by activity context, with “Morning Circle” being the most interactive and “Indoor Play” the least interactive activity. Adult words varied primarily at the classroom level, while conversational turns varied primarily at the individual child level. Conversational turns, but not the sheer amount of adult speech, were associated with children's productive vocabularies. Many children worldwide spend a significant amount of time in early education settings; our results underscore the importance of considering these contexts in debates around providing supportive language environments for all children.
PURPOSE: Engagement in sports is associated with cognitive and academic functioning in youth. However, heterogenous methodology has resulted in mixed findings across the literature. We propose a new method for investigating how sports activity may affect cognition through metabolic equivalents (MET)-minutes per week during sports engagement and compare it against total number of sports engaged. METHODS: Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, 9,973 children between the ages of 9 and 10 years old were included. Parent report of children's engagement in sports over the past year were utilized to calculate total MET-minutes per week. Youth participants completed the National Institutes of Health Toolbox. Generalized Additive Mixed Models were run to examine the relationship between MET-minutes on cognition, while controlling for Body Mass Index. The contribution of MET-minutes compared to total count of sports on cognitive performance were compared using Akaike Information Criterion values. RESULTS: Both total MET-minutes per week and past-year total sports were non-linearly associated with increased performance on multiple tasks of executive functioning and decreased expressive vocabulary. MET-minutes were shown to contribute more robustly to models of cognition than total number of sports. CONCLUSIONS: Past year MET-minutes per week was associated with increased cognitive performance, particularly in the domain of executive functioning, and was more sensitive to differences in cognition in contrast to total sports engagement. Indicating that greater measurement sensitivity for physical activity may increase predictive power on cognitive performance outcomes. Our findings provide more support for increasing physical activity in youth to promote cognitive trajectories.
The current study was designed to examine the relation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and children's memory and drew from a socioeconomically and racially diverse sample of children living in and around a midsized southeastern city (n = 140). Mother-reported IPV when the children were 30 months old was a significant predictor of children's short-term, working, and deliberate memory at 60 months of age, even after controlling for the children's sex and race, the families' income-to-needs ratio, the children's expressive vocabulary, and maternal harsh-intrusive parenting behaviors. These findings add to the limited extant literature that finds linkages between IPV and children's cognitive functioning and suggest that living in households in which physical violence is perpetrated among intimate partners may have a negative effect on multiple domains of children's memory development.
