Attained Curriculum in Japanese Elementary School Arithmetic and Junior High School Mathematics: An Alignment Analysis of the National Assessment of Academic Ability

Naomichi Makinae F1000Research, 2026, Vol. 15, pp. 460 https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.175939.3

This study aims to analyze the alignment of the attained curriculum in Japanese elementary school arithmetic and junior high school mathematics, based on the results of the National Assessment of Academic Ability. To achieve this, data from the assessment were used to compare mean correct response rates across groups defined by the degree of implementation of each instructional practice, using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). These rates were considered both overall and by specific domains and evaluative perspectives. The analysis of alignment revealed several instructional practices that showed tendencies of alignment with attained learning outcomes. In elementary school arithmetic, alignment was observed in practices that encouraged students to write notes in ways that made the processes of problem solving and reasoning visible. In junior high school mathematics, alignment was evident in lessons that emphasized connections between mathematical concepts and real-life phenomena, as well as in instructional approaches that ensured students understood the rationale behind formulas and rules. These findings suggest that instructional practices explicitly fostering students’ comprehension of problem-solving processes, contextual relevance, and conceptual justification tend to show greater alignment with attained learning outcomes. However, as this study did not control for confounding variables, the observed associations should be interpreted as exploratory rather than causal. The study contributes to curriculum research by identifying associations between specific pedagogical practices and attained learning outcomes, thereby offering insights into effective instructional design in mathematics education.

Curriculum expectation and classroom reality in manipulative use by JHS mathematics teachers in Amansie Central Ghana

Godfred Asiedu Mireku Frontiers in Education, 2026, Vol. 11 https://doi.org/10.3389/feduc.2026.1951289

Ghana's Junior High School (JHS) mathematics curriculum expects teachers to use concrete manipulatives. In the Amansie Central District, Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) mathematics failure rates exceeded 55% each year from 2022 to 2024; this underachievement provides the context, rather than the object, of the present study. Drawing on a curriculum-enactment perspective, this convergent mixed-methods, cross-sectional study examined JHS teachers' reported use of manipulatives, sources of supply, teaching methods, perceived benefits and challenges, and compared reported use with observed classroom practice. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 97 mathematics teachers in 56 public schools, semi-structured interviews with 31 participants, and classroom observations of 16 teachers. Across 13 syllabus topics, between 85.6% and 96.9% of teachers reported using manipulatives, yet only 2 of the 16 observed teachers (12.5%) used them during instruction, a marked discrepancy between reported and enacted practice. Although 67.0% reported using activity methods, observed lessons were predominantly lecture- or discussion-based. Improvisation was the main source of manipulatives (78.4%), and 78.4% of teachers reported never receiving manipulatives from the Ministry of Education/Ghana Education Service. One-sample chi-square goodness-of-fit tests showed that responses to every benefit and challenge statement were unevenly distributed across the agree, disagree, and uncertain options (all p < 0.001); most teachers perceived manipulatives as beneficial. The most frequently endorsed challenges were lack of continuing professional development (71.1%), the cost of improvised materials (66.0%), and non-availability (61.9%). The findings point to the need for resourcing, professional development, and supervision that attend to classroom enactment rather than lesson-note compliance.

Development, Implementation, and Evaluation of Number Pattern Games Based on Student Feedback

Hilal Boyraz; Sümeyye Betül Erdoğan; Danyal Soybaş Bartın University Journal of Faculty of Education, 2026, Issue 4, pp. 471-495 https://doi.org/10.14686/buefad.1862081

Purpose: Learning through games in education allows students to learn in an interactive environment while having fun, making logical inferences, and solving problems. The games are created by arranging numbers in 3x3 squares using consecutive terms of a fixed, increasing number pattern so that the sums of the numbers horizontally, vertically, and diagonally are equal. While playing the games, skills such as establishing relationships between numbers, performing operations, reasoning, and recognizing patterns are used. This study aims to reveal the knowledge, skills, and thoughts acquired by students regarding intelligence and reasoning games obtained from consecutive terms of number patterns with constant differences, by consulting their opinions. Method: The research was conducted using case study design, a qualitative research method. Four participants were selected from different schools at each grade level, from 5th to 8th grade. A semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher was applied in the study. The data obtained were analyzed using content analysis, which is more commonly preferred in qualitative research and provides detailed information. Findings: It was observed that students initially struggled to decipher the strategy of the games, but as the games progressed, they arrived at the solution by discovering the correct strategy. Some students developed similar games using close or distant consecutive terms of new number patterns. Conclusion: As a result, interviews with students who played the game revealed that they acquired skills such as problem-solving, establishing relationships between numbers, discovering number patterns, making logical inferences, reasoning, and performing calculations.
