Megan Gale; Katherine N. Alexander; Sarah Schwartz; Diana Jill Meter; Sarah Marie Coyne; Drew P. Cingel Frontiers in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 5, pp. 1933453 https://doi.org/10.3389/frcha.2026.1933453

Introduction The rapid expansion of social media has created new opportunities for adolescent connection but has also heightened risks of involvement in online aggression and cyberbullying. This study examined how problematic social media use, social media concealment, and parental media monitoring relate to cyberbullying victimization and perpetration among adolescents. Methods Participants include 686 adolescents ages 12–18 from 12 schools. Logistic generalized linear mixed models were used to account for the nested structure of students within schools. Results Results indicated that both problematic social media use and concealment from parents were significantly associated with greater odds of cyberbullying victimization and perpetration, whereas parental media monitoring was not a significant predictor in either model. Discussion Findings highlight the importance of addressing adolescents’ specific patterns of media use and point to multi-systemic prevention approaches involving families, schools, and technology developers to mitigate cyberbullying risks.

Are you looking for secrets? How autonomy and norms shape concealment

Maria S. Grigoryeva; Blaine G. Robbins Social Science Research, 2026, Vol. 141, pp. 103449 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ssresearch.2026.103449

This paper examines why individuals conceal information from others. Drawing on a recent theory about the origins of concealment, we argue that concealment stems from two primary sources: the desire for autonomy and norms of concealment. Using a nationally representative probability survey, we find that a desire for autonomy in two different domains—intimate relationships and work—is associated with concealment from romantic partners and coworkers/clients in those contexts. We also find that concealment is correlated with a descriptive and moral norm of concealment, with the moral norm having a weaker effect at work than in intimate relationships. We discuss the implications of these findings for research on concealment and its consequences for individuals, groups, and societies.

Psychiatry Clerkship Exposure and Mental Illness Stigma in Medical Students: Public Stigma Endorsement and Anticipated Stigma with Concealment/Avoidance

Aim: Stigma related to mental illness remains a major barrier to help-seeking and equitable care. Among medical students, stigma is clinically relevant because it may influence both future patient management and students’ own willingness to seek professional support. This study examined two complementary stigma domains, public stigma endorsement and anticipated stigma with concealment/avoidance, and their association with psychiatry clerkship exposure.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 354 undergraduate medical students at Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine. Psychiatry clerkship exposure was defined as pre-clerkship (Years 1–4) versus clerkship (Years 5–6). Stigma-related constructs were measured using a 29-item researcher-developed questionnaire organized a priori into Public Stigma Endorsement (PSE) and Anticipated Stigma with Concealment/Avoidance (ASA). Internal consistency was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.884 for PSE; 0.900 for ASA). Group differences were evaluated using appropriate univariable tests. Separate multiple linear regression models were fitted for PSE and ASA, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, smoking, psychiatric service use, contact with mental illness (self/family/social environment), family history of stigma, and stigma awareness/knowledge.Results: PSE scores did not differ by clerkship exposure in univariable analyses and were not independently associated with clerkship status in adjusted models. Male sex was an independent correlate of higher PSE. In contrast, ASA was higher among clerkship students and remained independently associated with clerkship exposure after adjustment (B = 2.75, 95% CI 0.44–5.05, p = 0.020). Middle socioeconomic status (vs low) was also associated with higher ASA (B = 3.37, 95% CI 0.67–6.07, p = 0.014). Model fit was significant for PSE and borderline for ASA.Conclusion: Psychiatry clerkship exposure was not associated with reduced public stigma endorsement but was linked to higher anticipated stigma and concealment/avoidance. These findings underscore the need for educational strategies that explicitly target distinct stigma dimensions, including self-referential anticipated stigma that may impede help-seeking among medical trainees.

Deception in care giving: legal and ethical complexities in the administration of covert medication

Nicola Thomas International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, 2026, Vol. 110, pp. 102279 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijlp.2026.102279

Covert medication (CM) - the surreptitious administration of drugs in food or drink is often framed as a 'moral gamble' and remains a pervasive yet controversial necessity in the care of older people with cognitive impairments. As global populations age and neurodegenerative conditions increase, the clinical reliance on CM has become structurally entrenched. This article evaluates the practice within the legal jurisdiction of England and Wales, specifically through the dual lenses of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA 2005) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). It provides an original contribution to the literature by synthesising the clinical application of CM with the statutory duty of candour under Regulation 20, proposing a 'tripartite test' of Imminence, Gravity and Exhaustion to bridge the current regulatory dissonance. It explores the fundamental tension between the clinical duty of beneficence and the patient's right to bodily integrity, specifically addressing the tension between the statutory duty of candour and clinical strategies predicated on concealment. By distinguishing between the physiological risks of overt coercion and the 'quiet deception' of CM, the paper rebuts deontological claims that CM constitutes an irreconcilable violation of rights. Instead, applying a rule-utilitarian framework, it argues that CM is a benevolent necessity when used to prevent certain physiological harm and preserve residual dignity. Furthermore, the article analyses judicial responses, integrating recent precedents such as Re A (2022) and An NHS Trust v XB (2020), to define a framework of necessity required to legitimise the practice. Ultimately, the paper concludes that while CM carries a significant moral and relational cost, it remains an ethically justifiable measure of last resort within a transparent English and Welsh legal architecture that prioritises accountability and consultation over administrative convenience.
