Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Proficiency and Identified Gaps Among Wushu Teachers

Yan Ding International Journal of Scientific Research and Modern Technology., 2026, Vol. 5, Issue 10, pp. 55 https://doi.org/10.38124/ijsrmt.v5i10.1744

Despite global advances in digital pedagogy, structured professional development that integrates technology into martial arts instruction remains scarce. Grounded in the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, this explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined the self-described TPACK proficiency of Wushu teachers and the specific proficiency gaps they experience in practice. A researcher-developed questionnaire was administered to a random sample of Wushu teachers, and ten of them were subsequently interviewed. Quantitative findings indicate that teachers are generally proficient across all three TPACK domains (overall M = 2.98, SD = 0.26), with Content Knowledge ranking highest (M = 3.01) and Technological Knowledge lowest (M = 2.96). Qualitative findings, however, revealed three concrete gaps: limited use of mobile and wearable technologies, absence of standardized tools for performance assessment, and inadequate understanding of biomechanics and physical conditioning principles. The study concludes that Wushu teachers possess strong mastery of technique and instructional strategy but require targeted development in technology integration, objective assessment, and the science of movement. A four-module ITM-Wushu (Integrated TPACK Training Model for Wushu Teachers) is proposed to address these gaps. Implications for teacher education and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Background This study focused on internal aspects, including cognitive states and motivational engagement, that may be overlooked by external indicators of participation in collaborative learning, such as utterance counts or observable behaviors. This proof-of-concept feasibility study explored whether neurophysiological responses related to auditory attention could provide information relevant to interpreting conventional behavioral indicators of participation. Using electroencephalogram (EEG) indices (N1 and P2 components), associations with self-regulated learning and interest during collaborative learning were explored. Methods EEG data were collected during real, discussion-based collaborative learning activities conducted in a university classroom setting. EEG data were recorded using wearable devices from nine Japanese university students enrolled in the course. Utterances were categorized as surface- or deep-level regulation utterances according to definitions from a prior study. Using a multivariate temporal response function approach, the N1 and P2 amplitudes elicited by each type of utterance were estimated. The degree of self-regulated learning was indexed by the number of deep-level regulation utterances, and interest in learning was evaluated using subjective rating scores. The relationships between these indices and the N1 and P2 amplitudes were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Results The number of deep-level regulation utterances was significantly associated with the N1 amplitude, irrespective of whether the utterances were categorized as deep or surface regulation. In contrast, subjective interest ratings were significantly associated with the N1 amplitude, particularly in response to deep-level-regulation utterances. Conclusion The N1 component, which is related to auditory attention, showed exploratory associations with self-regulatory behavior and learners’ interest.

Andrew W. McHill; Melissa A. St. Hilaire; Akane Sano; Jason P. Sullivan; Salim Qadri; Sara Taylor; … npj Biological Timing and Sleep, 2026, Vol. 3, Issue 1, pp. 45 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44323-026-00106-z

Accurate documentation of sleep timing (enabling calculation of duration and variability) is imperative for research, health, and safety recommendations. Methods in real-world settings include one-time self-report, diaries, and wearables that vary by ease, expense, and accuracy. Here we highlight how programmable online daily diaries compare to gold-standard polysomnography for measuring sleep timing, should be preferred over one-time self-report, and complement wearables for longitudinal clinical and research studies and real-world applications.
