Kwame Nkrumah recognised academic freedom as an enabler of knowledge production in Africa. At the same time, he sought to sidestep academic freedom to safeguard the “national interest” of the ex-colony he governed. His approach brought him into direct conflict with the hegemonic forces of “universal knowledge” both locally and internationally. His critics often argue that Nkrumah’s pursuit of decolonisation and Africanisation in Ghana’s higher education is necessarily antithetical to academic freedom. But is decolonisation a threat to academic freedom and, by extension, a drawback to knowledge production in Africa? To address this problem, I unpack the structural layers and negotiate what I call “Kwame Nkrumah’s dilemma”. I do this by deploying the hermeneutic-narrative method, a key approach to doing African philosophy. This methodological orientation undergirds my contextual examination of excerpts from three speeches delivered by Nkrumah and an editorial piece from his party’s newspapers between 1959 and 1964. In line with the hermeneutic approach, I utilise a historical literature review, drawing on secondary sources to examine the evolution of theories/concepts and past events, to demonstrate that Nkrumah’s formidable dilemma persists, as evidenced by the trajectory of African Studies after his departure and the enduring influence of his thought and actions on the discipline. I follow Nkrumah to argue that academic freedom in postcolonial Africa ought to go hand in hand with academic sovereignty and what Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni would call epistemic freedom.
This study is an exploration of the cultural and traditional practices of the Atswean-Asi people of Kwambai, a distinct subgroup of the Kuteb ethnic group in Taraba State, Nigeria. It interrogates the continuity and transformation of practices such as child-naming ceremonies, menstrual segregation, male circumcision, and associated taboos in the face of external influences. The main argument is that the interaction between Christianity, modernity, and indigenous practices has led to a lively mix of cultures. This has created a 'Third Space' for expression that helps maintain community identity through Selective Cultural Brokerage. The objective is to historicise and analyse these cultural practices within their socio-political and spiritual frameworks, utilising the Theory of Cultural Hybridity to interpret the data as evidence of active cultural resilience rather than passive reception. The study adopts the historical method, relying on oral traditions, ethnographic observation, and documentary sources. The paper concludes that these traditions are being restructured in a focused way. This gives us a new theoretical idea: Selective Cultural Brokerage. Community leaders work together to manage the rules of cultural continuity, which helps maintain the stability of a new, hybrid communal identity.
Ethnic social movements have long been associated with militant activities in post-independence Nigeria and identity is one of the mechanisms with which they mobilise for collective action. Using data from primary and secondary sources, this paper examines the construction and utilisation of collective identity by the Ombatse movement for the mobilisation of support in Eggonland, and the deployment of militancy in Nasarawa State of Nigeria. The Ombatse identity was built around the Ashim religious belief system of the Eggon people and portrayed as a revival of ancestral practices aimed at cleansing the Eggon people from moral vices and misfortunes. This identity attracted many Eggon people because it converged with their other identities, including as practicing Christians and Muslims. It also promised to clean out social vices, witchcraft, evil and misfortunes from Eggonland. Symbolic rituals and practices were used by the movement to build group solidarity and demarcate insiders from outsiders. The resultant widespread support attracted by the movement enabled it to mobilise its members for collective action in protecting the interests of the Eggon ethnic group. This resulted in their assumption of a sustained militant posture that brought the movement into violent conflicts with other ethnic groups and the Nasarawa State government. The paper concludes that collective identity was a powerful mechanism for the mobilisation for support by the Ombatse movement as well as for the deployment of militancy in Nasarawa State. Nonetheless, the resultant growth, popularity and militant activities of the movement also contributed towards its eventual decline.
Afro-pessimism can be defined as a negative or “pessimistic” perspective on the future of Africa, rooted in the continent's history and current situation. The concept, used since the late 1980s, argues that Africa's challenges are unsolvable and that its future will resemble its past. Within this framework, the study will address the concept of Afro-pessimism with a holistic approach and seek to answer the questions, “What are the issues with the concept of Afro-pessimism? What criticisms can be made of this concept?”. This study first examines the emergence and content of the concept, and then demonstrates how it is used, particularly in the media and related studies. In conclusion, the study argues that there are two fundamental issues related to Afro-pessimism. Firstly, negative news about Africa in the media reinforces a pessimistic view of the continent; secondly, there is a tendency to generalize negative events in specific countries to “Africa” as a whole.
